Day Break: ABC’s Taye Diggs Drama is Gone

cast of Day Break on ABC As you may recall, ABC recently announced that they were reworking their Wednesday night schedule (in preparation for the return of Fox’s American Idol). That left fans of Day Break out in the cold as the Taye Diggs series would be pulled from the schedule after the December 27th episode had aired. There was some hope and speculation that the series would be moved to another night. We now know that’s not going to happen.

The Lost-replacing series Day Break has been pulled from the schedule even earlier than expected. The ratings for Day Break have continued to fall since its debut and the latest was no exception. The sixth episode, entitle “What If They Find Him,” attracted only 3.1 million households. As a result, ABC has yanked the drama effective immediately. Repeats of George Lopez and According to Jim will fill 8-10pm Wednesdays for the next two weeks (both sitcoms begin new seasons in January on Wednesday nights).

Sign the petition! There are seven unaired episodes and, as of now, there are no plans to air them on the network (joining fellow dramas The Nine and Six Degrees). The good news is that ABC has said they will post the remaining episodes online, with a new episode being posted every Thursday for the next seven weeks. They may decide to release the episodes for purchase online via iTunes but I’m guessing that will have a lot to do with viewer demand. TV Series Finale home page

It seems that this great show will go the way of so many other shows to make the best way to watch shows on TV is through DVD. Action dramas are the hottest shows (aside from the thoughtless reality/contest shows) and it seems they are best found and watch on DVD. Examples include 24, Prison Break, Lost, and Heroes. I have watched each of these shows as airing on TV but they are best on DVD. Hopefully someone at corporate will see this show as needing to produce some more income, the best way is releasing it on DVD producing profits of about $50 per unit sold. I still need to see the un-aired episodes and I would definately be purchasing the season. Beyond that, I have little hope of Daybreak have any further life. Like some of the best shows on TV (My So Called Life…) Daybreak will only be a shimmer of potential light that dies too early.

What do you expect from ABC. Lost is the only thing they have in primetime, NBC is killing them. Its no wonder, we lose Daybreak to get brilliant work like Cavemen or Carpoolers.

I hope someone somewhere was fired, and subsequently divorced.

I thought Daybreak was a great show and the final episodes that completed the show were perfect. Unlike most series that end poorly, Daybreak ended perfectly and even into the next “day”.
One of the best shows ever cancelled (along with, now, Journeyman)
Too bad we couldn’t download the series to show to others.

    This sucks.

Started watching when it aired over here in the UK and wondered where it went. I really dug this show.

Can’t even get the complete series online (or seemingly anywhere). It had a bit more substance than a lot of action/drama shows.

I watched the first few episodes when it aired and it is still weighing on me…When it got cancelled, I got turned off by TV and avoided it since except for sporting events…

I’ll need to try to find the unaired episodes and

I have finished watching the complete season via DVD. Just get the whole story from there!!! It’s all about the money…no appreciation of the ARTS. Maybe even the Board of Directors’ heads HURT just watching it because you need BRAINS to understand the show. They don’t have that and because they have all their arteries clogged with fat-rich foods that restricts blood-flow to their brains…Hehehehe!

When the American TV Networks decided to pull the plug for shows like Day Break and post the remaining episodes on-line only for american viewers, folks like me from other countries have no legal option to see them. So we have to go to irregular web sites and download them. It is a shame. Due to this lack of respect for non-USA viewers to watch what is left or even pay to do that, the only path we have available remains those web sites.

Oh man… I JUST found Daybreak on abc.com and got HOOKED!!! what a fabulous show! I would stay up late LATE watching episodes…

BUT then they just took it off the website! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

I guess it’s to put on new shows, but I can’t be left hanging like this! I feel like the rest of you who got hooked while it was on the air… But at least they put it online and you got to see the rest. I didn’t get to see the end - and who knows if they’ll ever put it on again?

Help! Complain to ABC to get this on DVD or iTunes, or the website again…!

ABC SUCKS FOR PULLING DAYBREAK!!! I FRIGGIN LOVED THAT SHOW AND LOOKED FOWARD TO EVERY WEDNESDAY! ME AND MY BROTHER WAS HOOKED AFTER JUST THE FIRST EPISODE AND COULDNT WAIT TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN NEXT WEEK, ONLY TO FIND OUT IT DIDN’T COME ON,so we just thought they put it on a time out or something, HELL NO! those idiots canceled the one show i loyally watched every week, didnt miss one episode!!ABC sucks!!! screw lost and all the fans that were angry enough not to watch an awesome show!!

  13. 280. Mauxe said,

First, I feel that this show was one of the best when I started watching. It has a fun premise that makes you think a bit.

I also loved the Nine when it came out… and I was definitely ticked when both were canceled. At least with Day Break the episodes all were put online - small consolation as it just happened to be a show that was filed from beginning to end. The Nine was put online also but once you know there will be no end - why watch?

In response to a comment from earlier regarding the promotion of Day Break, ABC actually seemed to go overboard with commercials. I remember watching Lost and being inundated with Day Break spots. People I know that never even watched the show (but are Lost fans) were even talking about how many commercials were running for it (at the time). I am not sure specifically how the size of an audience is calculated - but it is just ridiculous that so many good shows get pulled so early. NBC did it with the Black Donnelly’s…

I guess more people just want to watch basic, somewhat mindless, programming. That’s what pays the bills though.

Man I just watched daybreak online and I couldn’t go to sleep. I actually watched about 10 episodes straight and cannot wait to finish it tonight. What has happened to us. American Idol better than Daybreak? No way. What other show could compare to the acting, writing, or filming of that show. It is awesome. I’m from Houston Tx and I think this decision to pull this show was WORSE than Houston not taking Vince Young or Regie Bush….for all Houstonians that is pretty bad.

I agree with Andrew H… Daybreak is the same calibur as FireFly. Ironic that both get canceled in their prime. I think what it comes down to is that people don’t want to actually have to THINK when they watch TV. They want mindless entertainment. Daybreak left you guessing until the very end, and even in the finale, there were questions that needed answering. Whats going on with Chad? Who was that guy across the street watching Hopper? Did he ever catch the crooked lawyer? They need to release this on DVD and give us a TON of bonus features that may answer some of our questions.

  17. 276. Andrew H. said,

Day Break is perhaps the best show I have seen since FireFly — both of which were canceled. Due to the excellent story line and execution, it was truly a pleasure to watch, if only online. Furthermore, it had enough closure to present a complete narrative over a single seasonal arc - something Lost simply no succeeds at doing. Maybe they will make a movie - like the producers of FireFly.

Daybreak was a really good show. I was never able to catch it on TV. I watched the first episode and was hooked - but my schedule would not allow me to see it. Then I found it on the internet and was very excited that I could now watch a show that I actually liked. But when I saw the last episode said “Series Finale” my chin dropped to the floor. I know it’s all about ratings, but some of the other shows ABC shows couldn’t be doing much better and they’re still on. Oh well, guess I’ll find another network with a show I like.

This has just started in New Zealand in the same time slot (but different channel) to Life on Mars. It’s a wonderful time-travel cop drama and I was surprised to hear it got pulled there. Looks like we will see all 13 but what is the point of watching it, if we know that the network there pulled it? I’ll still watch because it looks like a damned good show, but what a stupid decision Disney has made over in the US.

the man at the end of the episode is the dude who bite hopper at the station and was experiencing the same situation as him. He just looks a little different because he finally shaved. The smile on his face signals that his problems are finally over as well! This is just my opinion, but i believe the whole key to the repeating day was his father. When he finally figured out that his father had been murdered, the day stopped repeating and “tomorrow” came.

I work at ABC and was priviledged enough to have seen the pilot for Daybreak last summer and couldn’t wait for it to air. It has become one of my all-time favorites. For those who threaten to never watch ABC again, you’ll be kicking yourself for missing out on another great thriller. Last summer I also saw the pilot for “Traveler” and it was mind-blowing! I saw some promos for it a few months ago and I believe it’s slated to air in a month or so. PLEASE do not confuse me with a higher up here. I’m no executive so my opinion is unbaised. I’m just pleased to see I wasn’t alone in my love and passion for this show and therefore I do not wish for lovers of GREAT writing and dramas to miss out on another great show. When and if it does air, just watch the 1st episode and judge for yourself. You’ll see I’m just looking out for you guys.

Well, that’s real nice! I looked Daybreak up on the internet to see if I could find out when it was coming back on for the rest of it and found out it was canceled and I missed watching the rest of it online! Thanks ABC. Another reason to switch to watching all FOX network shows! I watched the nine too just for your information. Your polls of who views what doesn’t get to everyone you know. I’ll not watch another new program of yours again! I just looked up that this is what happened to Invasion too! Thanks for wasting our time. I’ll even watch my soaps on soapnet. Goodbye ABC! Hey, how come all of your experienced newscasters leave and go to work for other channels too? Whatever you’re doing…..it’s wrong.

    SEMI-SPOILER : IT’S UP, BUT….
uh, yeah, I watched the finale on abc.com late last night and it clearly was written for a show that is continuing. No answers or even hints at answers to the big question of what was making the day repeat; a couple of characters who should be neutralized or dead are not, presumably getting away to do some more damage to Hopper later on if there was a later on; and they end with a shot of some dude staring knowingly at Hopper and friends… except that I don’t think we’ve ever seen said dude before. So WTF??

What a disappointment :( All the other shows on ABC that are not that great, you take away one that had potential. ABC could have at least given the show a chance on a different day to see what type of response they would have gotten, instead of pulling the plug. Who puts a show on TV when there are other shows that have a little more popularity, after all LOST was showing at 10:00p.m instead of the same time as American Idol. I think Saturday would have been a good night or even Sunday, after Desperate Housewives. So many options and so little effort it seems.

I live in the UK and I happened upon this show through newsgroups and absolutely love it!
But what gets me is 2 things…
    1. They don’t allow anyone from outside the united states to view the shows on the abc website…
and yet 2. they have syndicated the episodes to be shown in the UK soon on the tv station called Bravo here, for what I can only assume is a money recouping mechanism! even though it is an unfinished series???
So why don’t they allow people outside the states to view it?
it can only spark more interest surely and more interest means more ratings!
I hate the fact that its all money orientated and not viewer driven…
and on the flip side… How can they be allowed to air an unfinished series in another country… therefore only creating more frustration with more people!!!
    Grrrrr….. :)

I love this show, and I just wanted to say thanks to those who put it together. Being a Firefly fan, I had hoped that such a fiasco wouldn’t happen again, yet it did. It’s a shame, especially for poor Adam Baldwin, but I still can’t wait to see the finale.

For the past two months I have been wondering what happened to day break, I loved the show. This weekend I started searching and realize it had been pulled for low audience? Everyone I know was watching the show and they loved it too. What a surprise when I saw that, at least, they posted the remaining episodes, I watched six in one day, it felt good!. Now I am waiting for the last episode, #13, and still wondering who in abc made the poor decision to remove the series.

I just wanted ppl to know how much I love Day Break and how much of a disservice ABC is doing to its viewers. All my friends and I watch it and we were shocked to find out it was cancelled. What a crock of garbage! It’s a riveting drama and anyone I’ve recommended to watch the show has become an instant fan. I think we should petition ABC to bring it back!

Day Break is a brilliant and thrilling show! I still watch it religiously, despite it no longer airing on T.V. I am fine with it airing online, so long as I get to watch it. The problem lies in the fact that there will not be another season of the show. This is a crying shame. I watch a lot of T.V. and know a good show when I see one. Not only is Taye Diggs an amazing actor, the show had a great theme going. Such a shame! ABC, wake up and get with the program!

I just watched the last last streamed episodes. I should be, and usually am, doing something else much more poroductive than watching TV. I fit any possible marketing demographic. ABC, you have missed the boat. My prediction is that Daybreak will become one of the biggest cult hits of the last several years. I’m a Lost watcher — big surprise. But Daybreak blew it away. There has been nothing on TV like it. It was as fresh as watching Sopranos for the first different. Totally different, of course, but just as fresh. The ensemble acting was pitch perfect. Each character was well-developed and involving. The story was smart and gripping. It hung together w/ hardly a crack for the viewer to begin to disbelieve it. Finally, it had a dark suspense and gravity that keeps you in its hold. The cinematography was beautiful and was simply more icing on the cake. Like a Michael Mann film on TV, but with a heart and a very deep plot. You missed the boat ABC. You misjudged the public. You lost a chance to distinguish yourself from the mindless drivel that has become the network TV pack, chasing popoular ratings moment by moment, instead of investing in your future. Come on — read these posts, tell your advertisers and ressurect the show. I’d watch it over Lost any day and I’d certainly never watch Desperate Housewives and the other silly nonsense. We’re yours if you’ll only have a little more faith in the public, give it a bit more time and bring it back. Decisions …. Consequences …..

It can’t be ignored how many people want this show back on television. Although watching it online is nice, but we want it back on OUR BIG screens. ABC is toying with its viewers just like whoever is toying with HOPPER! This show is intelligent and revolutionizes where television series could go and ABC is treating it like a piece of garbage…dishonoring it. Sell it to CBS or NBC..maybe those networks will give “Daybreak” and the viewers the respect we deserve. STOP DISRESPECTING THE VIEWERS!!!

It’s very disapointing, i’ve been waiting and waiting to see how this was going to play out and now were just left hanging. But this isnt the first time they have dropped a really good show. BP, Check out the ABC Episode viewer (available from the ABC.com home page, not the Daybreak page). I’ve watched the first two of the unaired episodes and they DO start from where the show had left off so you must have missed the Dec. 13th episode.

Either way, it appears that all episodes of the show are available on the episode viewer. And I must admit that the quality of ABC’s episodes have surpassed those I’ve seen from NBC and FOX.

BTW, these first two new episodes have been OUTSTANDING!!!

Episode 7 was never shown! It’s obvious YOU don’t KNOW or CARE about this series. Maybe since the Pilot consisted of 2 episodes, it threw you for a loop. Get your act together PLEASE! I was also disappointed that the “aired” episodes are also unavailable, such as the pilot. You oviously don’t care about attracting new viewers to this show. YOU ARE SO FRUSTRATING!!!

What is wrong with this picture? I guess the saying is correct that arrogence is power! Must we continue to live our lives as prisoners of ignorance. Does ABC have money to burn or what? Besides all that, just when TV got good(LOST) some idiot ruins it. Ill go ahead and say it. ABC - you just “lost” the biggest audience youll ever hope to find for any of your BS shows…..Hope you had fun pushing “day break” getting people into it , then taking it away, like you did for al lthe LOST fans… BRILLIANT MARKETING AND PROGRAMING - I could do a better job then who ever is on that JOB…. Hey ABC and all other networks thinking of dabbling into anything even remotely resembling sci-fi! Instead of dumping a sci-fi drama, why not dump your technologically risque performing shows on the Sci-Fi channel! Then you won’t have so many people mad at you when you drop a good show because your viewers can’t cope with watching Daybreak between General Hospital & Desperate housewives and at the same time!

Why bother getting myself worked up over these new productions? I feel like I’ve wasted very valuable time. Why is it that when there is finally a good show with a black lead actor, the show is not given a chance for success? Why is ABC so quick to cancel something that barely got off the ground in the first place? The show was interesting from the start, and gaining momentum with the plot thickening and yet, ABC pulls it and leaves many interested viewers up in arms wondering when the next show is going to air….only to be disappointed when it never returns. I’m very displeased with ABC…finally there was a show with minority actors (more than one) and, like I said before, it gets the boot without giving it a real chance to succeed. I wonder, if the show had a white lead actor…would it still be on the air with ABC giving it “a few more weeks” to see what the ratings would be like? ABC, you need to re-evaluate your priorities….everything doesn’t have to be “bottom-lined” to death! It’s only to the detriment of your employees (those actors involved in your shows) and to your loyal (maybe not anymore) viewers!!

Didn’t they expect viewership to drop around the holidays? And reruns of “According to Jim” are better? I’m really mad at you ABC. You’re too cheap to pay for more episodes of Lost to fill the Fall season, you take a really good show in Day Break and start it at the beginning of the busy Holiday season. Who starts a series that late in the fall season? nobody! You set it up to fail. Shame on you. Could you possibly go the extra mile for fans and at least put the final episodes online. You won’t follow through with that because that would actually be doing something to benefit your fans. LOST will be another Alias anyway so whoever reads this, don’t get you’re hopes up. I’m losing interest in your product anyway. Good riddence.

I think it’s absolutely craze that ABC or whoever isn’t going to air the last seven epidsodes. So what if the ratings went into the tank? That’s what the geniuses at ABC get for teasing us with no new episodes of LOST for several months. Give us the last 7 episodes.

It is terrible when you find a good show to watch and it is taken off so sudden. I used to rush home after bible study making sure I saw Daybreak and now its gone. This is the second show I was a watching faithfully and left. The other was Six Degrees. I hope my last favorite show isn’t booted and if it is looks like I will be a big CBS fan, thanks ABC for all you put viewers through.

People like myself are the reason for the declining viewership. During the holiday season I became quite busy and decidid to watch on line after the season etc. Bedsides, my family really doesn’t get into it so I would watch it on my laptop on line while they watch square pants etc. ABC is on the ball offering the on line service, however they need to consider that people will change the way they watch TV now having new alternatives…
    P.S.
I want ABC to re-imburse me for the hours spent watching an show anticipating an ending that now will never happen.

I can not believe abc pulled such a wicked show as DayBreak for the reality show American idiot, sorry idol, same **** if you ask me. Daybreak rocks and abc could of easily pushed it to a different time and/or day. Thanks alot a-holes. Its almost the norm for tv stations to cancel great shows. I hope there will be at least a dvd pack that would contain lost episodes and all the trimmings that all us loyal followers of the show missed. Hopefully sooner than later!!!!!

Just because American Idel was coming back doesnt mean to pull the show.. push the show to Thursday or earlier in the week. Pulling it off the air is gonna make alot of people angre and thats what I think about that! BRING BACK DAYBREAK!!!!!

No wonder my parents always called tv, “the idiot box.” I guess they were talking about network execs who think only idiots watch tv. I loved Daybreak because it was a puzzle that made you pay close attention. I like shows that have huge story arcs. (Although let me say that I’m having doubts about Lost- too big of an arc. It will end up like Alias with a big muddy ending that doesn’t make sense.) I was excited that they were going to tell this whole story in a reasonable number of episodes. I at least want to be able to download the remaining episodes. Why not? They’re already made. Somebody who cares might as well see them. And while I’m moaning, let me say that they should have kept The Nine for all the same reasons!

I had no idea until today that Daybreak had been cancelled. I just assumed it had been put on hold because of the holidays… then it seemed strange that I couldn’t see it online.. not even listed! I emailed anyone I could to find out what was going on… then I found this site on yahoo…I cried!!! and CRIED!!! Daybreak was good, and even if it was only on for 1 season ( a complete season) I would have been at least satisfied with that, but then they take it off in the middle when everything was starting to unfold!!! I think I am going to make a site dedicated to getting the rest of those episodes to its fans!!! I WANT DAYBREAK I WANT DAYBREAK…

Day Break was such a refreshing breath of fresh air to watch! I am so disappointed to find out that Day Break was canceled! I was watching the show from day one — it had suspense drama and an amazing cast! I couldn’t wait for the next episode to come on Wednesday night. I even told my family/friends about how good it was. I would re-watch the episodes online in case I missed something.

This may not have reached a billion viewer - or whatever numbers you were looking for. But it did keep you guessing, and right when things got really interesting you pull the show! Its not even available on your website. ABC should give Day Break a real chance to succeed. Lost is still on the air, and I wonder when they will ever be rescued from that island.

Day Break was a mystery, a puzzle that takes time to solve. As you can see by the previous comments there are people who actually enjoyed this show! You could have moved the show to another night. Replacing it with George Lopez/According Jim makes no sense at all. Exactly how well are those shows doing? I never even watched those shows anyway, and I won’t be watching them now!

Daybreak is wonderful because, unlike Lost, it’s only 13 episodes, with a conclusion to a tightly knit story. And yet they still refuse to air it, even though each episode has been better than every episode of season 3 of Lost, and I was a HUGE Lost fan.

I’m so disappointed that they aren’t even going to allow us to watch the end.

Oh well, I’m not going to watch Lost when it comes back, just to make a point.

ABC and its decision-makers have made the biggest mistake ever. How can a show as great as Day Break be taken off the air and an idiotic show like According to JIm and Lopez’ shows be put in its place. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? Does ABC not want to pay decent writers? It is more than disappointing…day break was the BEST show out there in an extremely long time. Who in their right mind would sit at home during holidays to watch tv? Bring it back!!!!!!!

I checked the ABC website this morning and my frustration grew even more:Daybreak is still NOT available to be viewed online.
There are so many other time slots in which Daybreak could be placed. However, it is blatantly obvious that air time goes to the people who shell out the most cash. Read: INFOMERCIALS I would watch daybreak at 400 in the morning if it meant keeping it on the air. But the truth appears to be that ABC DOES NOT CARE about its viewers; it cares only about PROFIT…..

And to add to that ABC.com doesn’t even seem to show that they ever aired Daybreak. I used to watch it online all the time but it’s no longer even there!!!

Have you folks wondered whether you’re rating system is really in touch with what people want? My wife and I would’nt touch “Life According to Jim” or “Lost” with a ten foot pole. Meanwhile your network is still airing reruns of FarScape?

How about releasing Daybreak so the Sci-Fi channel or others can air the show nationwide!

First Invasion. Then Lost on hiatus. Now cancelling the filler Daybreak. Let me ask this. When Invasion was on, they would take 3+ week breaks without any message to viewers that re-runs would be on or when the next new episode would air. They create their own bad ratings with poor policies on distribution. Daybreak was only a filler for Lost which should have never taken a break either. They honestly think Jim and Lopez are better? What a joke. I hope Housewives, Anatomy, and even my fave show Lost all fail on them now. I won’t be happy until Disney sells ABC off to the CW network. What morons.

ABC has a knack for canceling good shows, like INVASION. Just to let you know ABC, this is a BIG mistake. You are losing viewers as I write this. And will make plenty happy if you put it back on! Whatever happened to pleasing new fans that were made over such a short run. We still want to know how it will end. Wow, what an ingenious idea to replace an awesome drama headed by a great actor, with two sitcoms that aren’t even high on the funny factor. Oh well for new and exciting ideas.

If you want to know why ABC does what it does, just follow the money! I can’t blame them for pulling a show that can’t bring in the revenue, but these idiots are shooting themselves in the foot by airing show after show and then cutting them before we’ve had a chance to finish them. It’s suicide!! Just finish airing the damn show & THEN cut your losses and do some better research next time before airing a show that will not make you a profit! You guys at ABC are just idiots…

I too am disappointed that Daybreak was cancelled. I really enjoyed the show; it was the only thing I watched this fall. What initially attracted me was the premise that the storyline would resolve after the last episode. I am amazed that ABC completely pulled the show from their website — like it never existed. With such a precedent, I’m unlikely to begin watching similar programming on ABC in the future. I wonder if they would pull the Bachelor after a few episodes if the ratings were low?

I was busy in December, so missed the last episode on the 20th, but when I went to abc.com to watch it today, couldn’t find it anywhere. Please, ABC, put the past shows and the remaining ones on so we know what happens!

  178. 115. Rich Kelley said,

This certainly stinks. I don’t watch much TV, and “Day Break” was the only show on TV that I actually looked forward to seeing. Most of my other TV viewing is really more about hanging with my wife and chatting during the commercials.

I had no clue that it was cancelled until I looked in the TV guide this week and saw that it wasn’t on for the third week in a row. I had assumed that it had been pulled during Christmas time to save it for January when more folks would be watching.

It’s also frustrating because the shows are already finished. Could ABC air the remaining episodes on Saturday night? Network TV is a barren, lifeless wasteland at that time anyway (even more barren and lifeless than it normally is); static would get higher ratings than most of what’s on then anyway.

I also really liked “Eyes” and “Commander in Chief.” It seems like ABC comes up with great shows, and then cancels them. It’s getting really old.

If ABC is listening, if you’re not willing to air the show on Saturday night (or some other time slot equally devoid of content), I would buy this show on DVD.

It is so disapointing that ABC does this.. it makes me not want to start watching any shows on ABC since you never know when they will pull it!!

Bring back Day Break. It was a different story line and well written. The reason why I usually do not watch weekly series is because when you get interested in a show they cancel it. I like shows that are well written with good actors telling a interesting or different storyline. Bring back Day Break finish out the series.

This is one of the biggest piles. I totally agree with some of the comments above that if ABC won’t treat us with respect, then we shouldn’t show them any. Daybreak was a great show.
I am a huge Lost fan and wanted to boycott Daybreak because it took the place of Lost, but I gave it a chance. It turned out to be my favorite show next to Lost. I was actually impressed with how well of a show
