Las Vegas: NBC Cancels Long-Running Series
TVGuide is reporting that NBC has unceremoniously cancelled Las Vegas after five seasons on the air.
Las Vegas debuted on September 22, 2003 and was touted as actor James Caan’s first series regular role on television. The Academy Award-nominated actor was cast as the Montecito casino’s Head of Security, ‘Big Ed’ Deline. Others in the cast have included Nikki Cox, Josh Duhamel, James Lesure, Vanessa Marcil, Molly Sims, and Marsha Thomason.
Caan left the series last year to return to his movie career and Cox was cut from the show in a cost-cutting move. Caan was replaced by Tom Selleck and it was hoped that the addition of the veteran TV actor would help revitalize the series. It didn’t and, coupled with the series’ move to Friday nights, the ratings dropped significantly.
Last year, Las Vegas was one of the earliest NBC shows to get a renewal notice. What a difference a year can make.
NBC has opted not to renew Las Vegas for season six. Unlike Friday Night Lights, Vegas apparently doesn’t warrant shopping to other possible outlets and fans of the series are left with a cliffhanger. The last two episodes aired last Friday and was first in the ratings for both hours, Unbeknownst to viewers at the time, it was likely the last time we’ll see the staff of the Montecito. Stay tuned!

We want Las Vegas back…. It was one show that I liked besides Third Watch and I think that was cancelled too. At least you brought back Friday Night Lights. We really don’t need so many “stupid” reality shows, do we? Since its getting so expensive to drive anywhere — the one thing NBC could do is give us some decent shows to watch. How About It?????????????

My husband and I loved Vegas, We loved the characters. NBC you need to bring it back

I had watched the series from the beginning.
Originally I gave it a try for the fact that it appeared to give Soap Opera actors credit for how difficult their jobs were and the talent it takes to do often over the top melodramatic performances and not look like, well, bad. I was already a fan of Vanessa Marcil after seeing her performances on General Hospital. Then when I found out James Caan was in it I “was so there”
The show took you into new aspects of the world of Las Vegas Casinos, Security, and the weird and Wonderful world of the people and events that are there.
At least for the first couple of seasons.
The show had a great chemistry with the actors and wasn’t afraid to mix things up between the main characters leading to a strangely wide story developments for a small close group of characters.
Unfortunately, the compelling content of the Monteceto’s strange and interesting insiders world started to become less detailed and more about what we already knew about Vegas and the interesting backstory of the characters interactions with each other.
Then the backstory started to repeat itself (Josh is now who again???). Then the show started to depend more on its guests and their stories. Then they stopped paying attention to continuity. Then they lost me for a while.
I would occasionally tune back in and a bit into the next season I had the distinct feeling that a ramp and a waterskier in leather jacket and giant diaper was making his appearance.
Then I was surprised when the cool waterskier turned away from the ramp at the last second and started heading back for the land he came from.
Unfortunately you apparently can never go back, at least not all the way.
They developed the show, started going in new, good directions, and as always the performances and cast chemistry was top drawer.
Unfortunately the damage was done when many fans like me left the show and, unlike me, never came back at all. I must admit I only came back occasionally, taping the show and watching it when I felt like it. However the original magic for me never quite came back.
I feel bad for those fans that liked the show more than me, and really bad for those who loved it, because you lost something special you probably won’t see on major network TV for a while now. I hate it when it happens to me, and other people say “oh it was due.” and I think “no its not!!”.
I guess what I am trying to say is I understand why they canceled it and why they gave it the “kiss of death” timeslot, but I most definitely don’t agree with them. Right now NBC needs to support its shows with followings to the best of their ability with good, REGULAR, timeslots and give themself room to develop tommorows hits like they used to when they were on top.
Las Vegas Fans… My condolences and my hope that your favorite actors find soft ground that you like for them to land on so you won’t miss them long.

I, too, am disappointed with the Vegas cancellation. I’m sure NBC didn’t want to keep picking up the tab for the show (it was very expensive to produce) and NBC, instead of looking at quality shows, looked instead at ways to cut costs.
NBC, there’s a reason your network is in the crapper, and why you continue to finish FOURTH in network rankings. Moves like this epitomize the ineptitude at the controls, and they will only continue to get worse. The only show on NBC worth watching now is the Office.

I absolutely loved Las Vegas, and like many of you have already said, I will no longer be watching NBC! I think it is wrong not to atleast end the story! I hate NBC!

I have been waiting, and waiting for Vegas checking the Friday night lineup, my husband and I thought it was because of the writers strike that it had been delayed-how very disappointed we are with NBC-there aren’t any other shows we watch on NBC other than Vegas. I’m really sad that you left the devoted viewing public hanging without an ending, like all weekly series-they end but not as ridiculously as Vegas ended-I guess I’ll stick to cable network shows-that’s why the public doesn’t watch the three old main networks CBSABC like they use too. They leave stupid shows on, and cancel the good ones. Bring back Vegas at least for a finale show-I won’t be watching NBC anymore I don?t like your network lineup.

I can’t believe you cancelled LasVegas it was a great show . We watched it all the time and enjoyed all the shows. It had alot to offer. Why NBC leaves dumb shows on and cancells a good adult tv series is beyond me. They should rethink this move as it was a BIG mistake. Bring it BACK!!!

NBC STINKS! LAS VEGAS WAS A ROCKN SHOW YOU NBC IDOTS! IT WOULD BE COOL TO DO A CROSSOVER THING WITH CSI (VEGAS ONE) AND THE CAST OF LAS VEGAS. THEY COULD KEEP IT GOING FOREVER AS THE ORIGINAL CHARRACTORS (KINDA LIKE CROSSING JORDAN). I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WOULD BE COOL IF CSI CHARRACTORS WOULD APPEAR ON THE LAS VEGAS SHOW, MURDER SCENES AT THE MONTECITO. HEY ANYONE KNOW IF ANYONE IS DOING THE PODCASTS FOR PAST LV SHOWS?

What a shame we fans yes all of us fans of Vegas deserves a ending at least… are you telling us after watching Vegas for 5 years we do not get a ending to this story what a rip off… I got on to see when Vegas was coming back on since the writers are back and find that you NBC don’t even have the nerve to tell the fans that the show was cancelled. We wanted to know and see Belinda and Danny have their baby we waited all season for this and now we do not get the happy ever after that Vegas fans deserve… is this what you are telling us NBC that don’t watch anymore of your shows and get involved because you will just end it without a final farewell or ending to a 5 year story… The last 2 shows were awesome and but not ending more like a cliff hanger and now to find out Vegas is not returning wow once again somone is making a wrong decision a very wrong choice… I and the fans of Vegas would like to have a ending please at least give us that>>>what choice do you have!!!!!

Thiws was a great show but writing started to suffer. Wrong move to fire Cox. Wrong move to cancel.
Some great shows like Freaks and Geaks, American Idol and now Las Vegas.
With just “reality TV”, time to listen to the radio or pick uip a good book.

Las Vegas was one of the best show out there. Cancel one of the stupid shows.
Not Las Vegas. Tom Selleck is great on it. Do not change any of the people on it, they make the show great. We want the show back on. You take off great show and leave us with crapy shows that we do not want on or put on new shows that are really crapy. Why mess up a good show. PUT IT BACK.

I agree NBC are morons they wouldn’t know good tv if it smacked them in the face. This was a great show it had it all drama comedy romance etc. I definetly cant believe they would leave it the way they did. They didn’t advertise for this show very well and the fact they switched air times and ratings went down and they have the audacity to think its the shows fault is humoruos to me. I am officially done watching nbc and anything affiliated with it. All the crap shows get to stay on but the good ones get the boot wow is all i have to say. Don’t you just love how stupid people just because theres more of them in the world win with reality shows. The least these jerks could do is come out with a movie or something to at least put our minds at ease .NBC sucks and i will never watch that station again.
March 18th, 2008 at 5:12 am
I have been watching this show since the beginning and it never has gotten old. The move to Friday night was stupid. Stick it in the Tuesday at 10:00 slot and run it another year and the ratings will go back up.
March 17th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
They could at least finish the series, not just leave it hanging.
March 15th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
I won’t be watching NBC again. Very tired of Reality Shows!!!!!!!!!
March 13th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Disappointed in NBC. Cancelling a show so abruptly, leaving the fans of the show wanting more and then cutting us off. You NBC people ruined Las Vegas when you moved it to friday nights. Done watching NBC that’s for sure. Go ahead and be another “me too” station and add yet another aweful reality show!
March 9th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Really disgusted with NBC. Las Vegas was our favorite show. We watched it every Friday night.
We’re tired of those silly reality shows made for morons. At least Las Vegas had a story line, and was entertaining. The cast was great. Nice of NBC to leave us hanging instead of just finishing the story line. Guess we won’t be watching NBC anymore. You follow a story line and then they end it like this? Bring it back!!!!!!!!
