Passions: Cancellation Details & Petition to Save NBC Soap
The peacock network is announcing today that the eight-year-old soap Passions has been cancelled. This comes as a shock to some but the writing has been on the wall for awhile. Still, things may not be as grim as they may seem.
Passions debuted on July 5, 1999 and was created by Jim Reilly, a writer from Days of Our Lives. Reilly is the head writer on the soap and is an executive producer with Lisa de Cazotte. The supernatural sudser takes place in fictional New England town Harmony and replaced the long-running Another World. Now it looks like Passions will be replaced itself.
The soap has been in danger for quite some time. When NBC renewed the series in May 2006, the network renewed it only for one year and required significant budget cuts. As a result, $4-5 million was slashed from the yearly budget and caused several crewmembers and performers to be let go. Now, nearly a year later, NBC has cancelled the soap. Why?
NBC recently announced that they would be expanding the popular Today Show from three to four hours weekdays. The Today Show is a great cash-earner for NBC and has been around for 55 years. The cast, including Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry and Al Roker, is scheduled to hold a news conference today at the Television Critics Association (TCA) winter preview tour to announce the news show expansion.
That “super-sized” version of Today will leave NBC affiliates with one less hour in their mid-morning slot. To compensate, NBC is releasing the Passions timeslot to affiliates. As a result, Passions will be pulled — though not for awhile.
The present Passions contract runs out in June but the new expanded Today won’t debut until Fall 2007. To fill the summer months, NBC is expected to negotiate with the Passions cast and show creatives to extend the soap until August. That could be the end.
But, like Tabitha and any good soap fan knows, there are always possible ways to cheat death. How could Passions survive?
NBC is proud of the soap. As recent as last week, the network issued a press release touting the fact that Passions was fourth in the ratings for all soaps in the very desirable female 18-34 demographic. Passions even tied for first place (with Days of Our Lives) for that demographic for the first week in January. As well, NBC owns Passions completely, allowing the network to keep all profits.
Because of its strong popularity with young women, there are rumblings that NBC may try to keep the series alive elsewhere. Possibilities include producing the soap (perhaps in a shortened version) for Disney’s SoapNet cable station, the struggling MyNetwork TV or even on the Internet.
The soap won’t go off the air for several months so we probably won’t know what the future holds for Passions and the Harmony residents for quite some time.

I have been watchin passions for a few years now and i think they really should be on the air still maybe a place on the soap network with all the other ones. passions in my book was the best soap out there. give them another chance.

i also have been watching passions since day 1 and i wish they would be given a new chance by another network with better writers.it is possible. they have always been a different kinda soap but they deserve another chance to be on the air.

I’m very upset to learn that Passions may be cancelled I have been watching it since 2000 and loved every minute of the soap. I am 29 years old and have watched all of the soaps at one point or another and hands down Passions was by far my favorite. Please allow Passions to stay on the air I just Directv two days ago and have been searching for my soap.

i have watched passions since the day it aired, i havent missed one episode, i even went out and got Direct TV just so i could continue to watch, it is a sad sad thing that you would cancel passions but leave other stupid soaps like as the world turns and one life to live on, NBC lost a lot of great fans when they made the dicision to cancel it. SO PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!!

I have been watching Passions from day one and I am very disappointed that it has been cancelled. Even after it was cut from NBC and DirectTV had exclusive rights, I was still finding a way to watch almost every episode. It is truly sad and I do wish that the show would return. Please bring it back!!!! Who needs the Today Show anyway?

I have been watching passions since I was 9 years old and continue to watch it (well what I can find to watch on the internet) to this day at the age of 18. Passions is my absolute favorite show. I was so upset to find out that Passions would only be availble to Direct TV subscribers and me being young still and my parents not wanting to switch, I was devastated!! So I wasn’t able to watch as much as I used to. And to find out that Direct TV didnt renew their contract and that Passions would be CANCELLED completely tore my heart apart. It felt as bad as having a death in the family. How could this happen!! Through the years of watching Passions I’ve grown a connection with Passion and the characters on their as if they were like family. Always hoping that the truth would come out about what Gwen and Rebecca did so Ethan could really see the real Gwen and get back with Theresa, the one he belongs with….but in order for that to happen the show had to be cancelled? Its so sad. Us fans will never get to see episodes of Ethan and Theresas life together as it should’ve been years ago. Same thing with Luis and Sheridan. Though I wish it would’ve turned out Luis and Sheridan and then Antonio comes back and then him and Fancy get to know each other and fall in love! That would’ve been better!! All of us fans dont want Passions to end here. WE WANT MORE PASSIONS!!! Please save PASSIONS!!! Passions is a great show full of oustanding cast members. This is the sadest thing ever. We all need to work together to save PASSIONS. BRING PASSIONS BACK NBC!!! GIVE IT ANOTHER TRY!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!

Do not cancel Days. I have been watching this show for about 17 years. It is the best Soap oon T.V. Knock off Stephano and Nicole and that would be even better. This is a great show do not cancel it. Who will become the next, Alien, Demon, Stalker, Who will die and come back 800 times. See what i mean!

I have watched Passions from the begining. My Mother and daughter also watch it. It’s like a part of our lives is gone and it’s sad. The person/persons who decided to pull the plug should be fired. It appears keeping the customer happy isn’t a consideration anymore.

I have to agree with everyone else My day is just not the same without Passions I enjoyed it emensly and thought it was sometime stupid and funny but it kept you wanting to watch just to see what was next I think the people or person who writes the show has an amazong imagination I I have to agree with some that all these stupid reality shows are just stupid and I would not waste my time watching them sometimes I think there is not anything to watch with all these channels it’s rediculous. I think Passions lost a lot of viewers when it moved to direct TV everyone doesn’t have Direct tv

Let’s all write to all the networks, especially NBC and Fox and Soapnet and see if they can’t do something to put Passions back on I feel so bad for the actors who are out of work It’s hard to find acting gigs, and I doubt if the soap actors are paid as well as movie stars or even prime time actors. I miss Passions!

Nobody cares about the Today Show, its hosts, Kathie Lee, reality shows, or those pampered and spoiled “athletes” on the Olympics. Take all this stuff OFF!
PUT PASSIONS BACK IN PRODUCTION! There are MANY highly educated fans; I am one; I am working on my doctorate. PASSIONS crosses many lines–it appeals to MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF PEOPLE!

PASSIONS has many fans and deserves to be back in production. It was the ONLY series I made sure I watched regularly, even taping it when I was in Europe for extended periods of time. Meeting other PASSIONS fans was always fun, because they were from all walks of life–from kids and teens to college profs to scientists–I have met people in all of those categories who loved PASSIONS. In addition, PASSIONS had some of the BEST actors alice today–can anyone her age even come close to Lindsay Hartley’s acting ability (not to mention her beauty.) Juliet Mills is the best thing on television! NBC/USA/SoapNet/CHILLER/FOX–someone–pay attention to the many PASSIONATE fans and bring back this GREAT series!

I cannot believe that Passions has been taken off the air! I really looked forward to the show, even though it was only on 3 days a week, which I was unhappy about but was grateful for Mondays through Wednesdays. It has been a unique soap that had me both laughing and crying at times. There are so many reality shows on the air that I am dumbfounded. Why would anyone watch a reality show when they can put on the news or live their own life and face reality. We need more entertainment! I found Passions to be just that-entertaining.
Please bring the show back on the air. Remove the extra hour of the today show, please-if that’s what it takes!

It feels like a part of me is gone. After watching Passions daily for the last 8 years I can’t imagine life without it. I can’t describe how wierd I feel about getting so emotional over a tv show but Passions was different. It gives you excitement trying to hold onto hope for Teresa and rage at all the horrible things that got in her way. I love this show and it was very shocking and hurtful to see it go without warning.

PLEASE, PLEASE, KEEP PASSIONS ON THE AIR. I started watching Passions in 1999 when I was going through chemo-theraphy and the levity and sometimes silliness of the show keep me laughing and looking FORWARD to the next episode. It helped me through treatments. I was so disappointed when it was taken off NBC but at least it was put on direct TV 101. Can you not move it to another channel??? This show is a cliff hanger and we need more of them instead of the Today Show Crowd.

I am very disappointed at directtv for getting this soap passions on the air to see after they took if off NBC. Its like they just got it on directtv just to get people that really liked this show to sign up to the direct tv.and now that there signed up under a contract they take it off the air. this really stinks…….i believe they broke a contract and many others for doing what they did please bring it back on 101 hope to see it back on soon ……

why the hell they felt they needed for another HOUR of the today show is beyond me. People coulndt even listen to viera for ONE hour what makes them think people will tune in for 3?!?!? Its like the local news being on at 5,530,6, and 7 theres not THAT much to talk about and nobody tunes in much past the second hour. Did these executives really go to college? If so they wasted ALOT of money, I can do a better job without a degree.

Please reconsider this show is the best one on TV and I too have been watching it since day one, and then through Directv. This has a great story line, and the cast is incredible…I was sooo sad to see it end, although I loved how it ended so well for everyone great to see a happy ending for a change! But the best ending would be to bring it back and let us enjoy the show forever….Thanks to the cast for always doing an incredible job, will miss your great work! Best of luck to everyone.

i cant believe direct tv is doing this!! i turely will never forgive this if passions is taken off the air. if passions goes off the air with direct tv, i go off of direct tv. i switched to direct just to watch passions.
i bet switching passions to direct made them alot of money, and they surely will loose mine if passions is not put back on the air b/c direct tv is so laggy and sucks.

i moved to direct tv just to watch passions!! im very upset with direct tv desion to take passions off the air, it feels they are breaking the contract “switch to direct tv to watch passions” .
passions is the best soap out there. i’ve watched the whole time passions has been on the air faithfully! i love passions - PLZ DONT TAKE IT OFF THE AIR! passions cast members are the best soap artist, so passionate. this is heart breaking.

What a shame. Passions was such an addicting show. Just so you all know Direct TV is VERY displeasing. But I only put up with it for this ONE soap.. nothing else. I’ve been watching passions everyday for the last 6 years. Since I was 15!!! Bring it back for all the faithful viewers!

I signed up for DirecTV so I could continue to watch Passions. I have been disgusted with the service from about day three but have put up with it because I wanted to see my favorite soap. With Passions gone, I guarantee that I will be shopping for a new service provider. I am certain that I am not the only one who feels this way. I have friends who have expressed this same sentiment. I believe that cancelling Passions will end up costing DirecTV a great deal more than producing it ever did. I agree with Rose, if a network decides to revive Passions, I will watch their other programs to return the favor of them giving me back Passions! Scroll up producers, people want their Passions back!!!

For the past 15 years I”am paralyze I canT get up, the only soap that made forget my miserable situation was Passions and now my heart crys when I heard that it will go off the air.For the love of God do something about it. See if another station wants to take it. CBS, ABC, or even Canadien statons. Please please try the best you can to save Passions. I tivo them daily and moving it to satelite was bad enough but cutting it down to three days a week and now ending it , is awful. This is the most relaxed time of the day for me and having copd, and being on oxygen, I need to relax. Please try to find a way to save it. The actors are so talented and I am surprised none have received awards. Theresa is so real and Kathleen Noone is fantastic. I remember her from All My Children Please save the show we have more than enough news shows. One hour a day can make so many viewers happy and keep a great cast in one place they sure have been loyal to Passions.

Please do not cancel passions or days I have been a viewer since they both have been on. I believe it was a mistake for NBC to drop passions I also think that A LOT of the ratings did go down because of the switch because some people can not afford Direct TV or cable for that matter. But if you do get rid of passions on Direct TV then I think that they should put it back on NBC so that people who can not afford cable can watch their shows again also it was awesome when they had it five days a week instead of three….. I know that a lot of viewers would be happy if passions was back on NBC

We fans LOVE Passions. I am a baby boomer, very educated, and find this show so intriguing. Tabitha is my favorite…and I love the references to “witchy”, Wizard Of Oz, Timmy, and all things imaginative that the writer has used! I was also a gullible one and signed up with Direct TV so I could continue to watch my favorite show! Now I feel so cheated! If another channel decides to resurrect Passions, I will be so greatful since I have been watching from day one! I will watch other shows on that station and support it because it stood up and supported us!!! I use a DVR to watch Passions..and all my shows. I hope DVR’s are considered when checking on viewers. Most people use them today. SO PLEASE PLEASE BRING BACK THIS SHOW!!! DO NOT LET IT DISAPPEAR!!!

I have watched Passions every day since it began, and now purchase it via NBC online subscription because I was not going to switch to directv for one show (and that was a good decision, SINCE THEY CANCELLED IT. Directv execs can’t have really imaged that hordes of people would have switched for one show, no matter how wonderful. And I hear that Passions is their number one show, it just didn’t convert enough people to directv so they are cancelling it. When directv can compete with cable’s internet/phone/hdtv offerings, I’ll consider it. Not because of a single show. Marketing 101.

First off, I started watching this show (bits by bits) when I was a freshman in high school. I rememebered the first time I watched it, I was in Cali for thanksgiving vacation with my mom, my sisters, my little brother and my nephew. When I came back to Ak, I started watching it a little bit more and finally - I was attached to the show. Every day after school, I would hurry home just so I can make it in time for the show to start. When I graduate from high school, I started college and started watching less and less of it. Then after I graduated from college, I found a job that starts from 3p-11p and Passions started at 2p, which meant I had time to watch it before going to work - which was just down the street. Anyways, now I’m married and we have our own place, I was more than happy to watch it - not knowing that it was getting cancelled. To make a story short, BRING THE SHOW BACK ON NBC. I don’t have DirecTV and right now - I don’t think I can afford it. I have a 8 months old baby boy and budget seemed kinda tight right now. It would be nice for me to be able to watch it on NBC or just another channel that we can get on Preffered Cable (Channels 1-86). Thank you. I’ve missed out a lot on Passions and would like to catch up on where I left off….. PLEASE, BRING PASSIONS BACK………….

I had always told my dad that I would never ever in a million yrs watch soap operas,but I caught a few of the passions shows on nbc when I was about 13-14 and fell in love with the show!..still would be watching them today if I was able to afford the over priced DTV.I am a huge ET fan and I am very disappointed that I will not be able to continue watching them!I refuse to watch any other soap!I miss passions and hope that some regular tv station will pick it up!

This is the only soap that I have always watch and it would be very desipointing to see it go. My hole family watches Passions with me. Not everyone has computers to tell you there feeling but I can tell you that it is a very very popular show in my home town and we would hate to see it leave. I think that Passions should be brought back to a cable channel. Some people including me who like the show couldn’t afford the price to have satellite. We would love for it to be brought back to any cable channel. My grandmother and I have been watching Passions since the first show aired.

I have been watching passions for many years now. Not once have I seen any advertisement for the past seasons on Dvd. I really think that nbc should put all 9 seasons on dvd or vhs. It is in best interest for NBC to bring back passions on cable instead of Direct TV. Passions is going to loose all fan base because fans are not going to want to purchase Direct TV. There aren’t many soaps on that interest me, but Passions is so rediculous, with the witch, that you just can’t help but watch it. If it’s about cutting the budget why wouldn’t you slowly knock off people like Beth, her mom,and some of the monkeys.I know that it being far fetched is one thing but I think that some of the actors and actresses really need a reality check and need to lower their expectations of what their acting skills are worth. Face it some of the actors and actresses are really not very good at all.

Well this is not right, however I think its terrible we beg and beg to have it back , but with no avail, it is just a money thing. I guess I will just get in tuned with another soap opera and have them a part of my life. I hate to leave Passions yet they did not have a problem leaving us so I will just devote myself in another soap opera and feel them as a family to day and let Passions go.. So be it another soap opera will be part of my life and others will get involved in it and Passions can be on its way. A great loss but anhother soap will replace them.

I’ve been a fan of Passions since the promos started running on NBC and fell in love with it ever since…I WANT PASSIONS to be on the air somewhere…on my tv. I am so mad because passions moved to dtv.i looked forward to watching it every day.dtv wants an arm and a leg for there service.i bet they lost alot of ratings because of the move. i wish they would bring it back,because im not paying that much for dtv when all i want to watch is passions.they advertise that it is 20 dollars but they dont tell you that if u want the 101 which is the channel passions is on it is not included in the package and you have to pay like 60-70 dollars just to get the package that includes passions.All i have to say is dtv sucks.

I have never been interested in any other Soap besides Passions. Everyone thought I was a nut for watching it but I eventually got my Mother and (believe it or not my boyfriend) to watch the show!! I work in real estate and I am stuck in an sales office all day long. I loved being able to go to NBC.com and catch up on my Passions!!Now the show is unavailable on your website and I can’t move to Direct TV. I understand you all have made a business decision when you choose to stop airing the series but there are many FANS out there that wish you still had it. I wonder if there is any ethical aspects involved in your decision making process. Charging $19,95/monthly is ridiculous! If you were to charge at all it should only be $1.99/monthly.There are usually several people in a household and one person wanting to switch cable companies is not enough to get the ball rolling. My parents have been with COX for years they will not switch companies just becuase of one show. I beg you guys to put the show back on your network. To be honest with you that was the ONLY show I ever watched on your network. Now that the show does not air I have not tuned in to your station at all. We have enough talk shows, daily shows ect. Please reconsider and BRING PASSIONS BACK!!

Recently a decision was made to stream episodes of Passions online for a monthly fee of $19.99? (Not Good Enough !!!)
I’m a 2nd time signer to this ongoing petition and I still can’t believe that nothing (and I mean NOTHING!!!) has been done to bring back Passions to those people who do not have DirecTV.
What is wrong with you guys? First you take the show off of NBC for no reason and now the only solution you guys came up with was to put episodes of the show online for $20 a month? Are you kidding me?!!!

I am on disability and have watched Passions by taping it when it first can out on NBC and now,everyday that it is on and I want it back on NBC replacing the Reggis show which is stupid and will never have the smart people that enjoy soap operas as a way to not think about the problems that they have to face. the Passions is a great soap opera and I would like to see more of soap operas than the news. Please keep this show running and bring it back to NBC

I hope NBC can reconsider what terminating passions forever would actually do to us young women…
Its not just an hour of t.v. but an hour where we women can tune in to and forget about all our problems and for that moment be able to relate and not feel like we are alone….

I am hoping that NBC can will change their minds and bring back Passions and cancel the 4th hour of The Today Show. I used to stop my busy day to watch Passions and now I don’t. I just listen to the radio. I use to watch the today show in the mornings, but now I don’t do that. So you have lost me as a viewer twice.

Me and my wife watched the show every time it was on. It was one of those things that we would sit and watch together. We have alot of memeries of our own with watching “passions”, like making our own in some ways. It was a down to earth, and more life like than some other shows on tv now days. There are things that happened on there that we deal with in real. We really like the program and would enjoy watching it again. Wished it would come back soon. It would be nice, the sooner the better ! ! ! THANKS FOR LISTENING !!!!!

I began watching this soap when it first aired. Now, my sons watched it with me. They enjoy it as much as I do, even if the story is starting to get a little weird. Please find a way to get it available on Comcast.

I have watched Passions since it’s inception in 1999 and I love it. Please do not take it complete off the air. Put it on Soap channel if you have to like OC. I lived to watch it and Days everyday, and to take it off the air, will surely disappoint and hurt a lot of people.

Please bring passions back to NBC. I love the show but I refuse to get Direct TV. I don’t care if it’s at 3am. Bring it back! I can record it on my DVR with BRIGHTHOUSE. No Direct TV for me.
Seems like it’s a whole different show now. And just 4 days of the week. SUCKS

I too am a passions fan, it’s sad to know that because of the time slot left after the new and improved “Today’s Show ” Passions was moved to Direct TV. Passions is lighthearted and entertaining;it was my time to clear my head just for a few moments before the kids got in from school. Bring back Passions to NBC , just shorten the long plots!
