Women’s Murder Club: ABC Kills Angie Harmon Series’ Chances for Season Two

IMAGEWith October Road and Men in Trees now cancelled, ABC seems to be on a killing spree — not unlike the “Kiss-Me-Not” killer on Women’s Murder Club. With that in mind, it makes sense that Murder Club would be the network’s next casualty.

ABC’s Women’s Murder Club, based on the popular James Patterson books, debuted on October 12, 2007. Viewer and critical reception was mixed. Almost 11 million viewers tuned in for the series premiere but as few as eight million returned for later episodes. More importantly, the TV show’s percentage of the 18-49 demographic dropped as well. The show typically skews older which is essentially a sin in TV ratings.

After the writers strike finished, it looked like Murder Club was done but ABC decided to give it another chance. They fired the show’s executive producers, hired new ones and order three additional episodes to complete the season. The series then returned to primetime after a three month absence. Unfortunately, the numbers didn’t get any better.

The crime drama has now been officially cancelled but, fortunately for fans, they’ll get to see all of the produced episodes. Episode 13, titled “Never Tell”, is scheduled to air tomorrow night. Will the “Kiss-Me-Not” killer be brought to justice by the time the series ends? Stay tuned! TV Series Finale home page

It’s a shame this show was canceled. I don’t get how it’s appeal to older viewers is a sin, don’t they matter when it comes to something to view on the screen? It was one of the best shows on but yet people want to watch Dancing with The Stars.

    Nikki Says:

I loved this show, I can’t believe they cancelled this but kept WIFE SWAP!!! Seriously, would people really rather watch animosity forced upon families or a well written show with a good cast? I agree with the comment that it was hard to find, especially with the writers strike, but I watched it every week along with my mom. BRING IT BACK ABC!!

Please bring Women’s Murder Club back!! I love the show and I’m under 18!!! It was one of three shows I watched regularly. It is an amazing show!!!!

I want this show to come back!!!! It was my “get-away”, my “fantasy world”. I would put the kids to bed then get comfortable on my couch with a glass of wine and watch. I will have to find another show…but I know it won’t be on this station unless they bring it back!!!

Women’s Murder Club was the olny ABC show that I watched, since it has been cancelled I only watch CBS and some of the cable channels.

I am absolutely devastated by the cancellation of this fabulous program. I will truly miss the characters each Friday night. This was truly the Cagney & Lacey of the new century. So sad to it dismissed with such cowardness for ratings.

I’m very upset that Women’s Murder Club was cancelled. Very poor choice by ABC. Not only was this show up against a tough schedule, but the stories written by James Patterson are just great. What the heck is wrong with these people. The cast was outstanding. Should be given another chance on a different day and I bet your ratings are completely different.

    Robin Says:

This was one of my favorite shows last season and I am in the target demographic. The book series is great and I loved Angie Harmon in the TV series. It was the only thing I liked on ABC - big dummies.

    Jill Says:

Counldn’t agree more with the comments I read. Isn’t Friday night a tough night for ratings overall? I’l like to know the viewership on CBS and NBC on Fridays. Personally, we continue to make the channel move to TNT, USA, SHOWTIME,
etc., because those networks are really putting out some darn good show, along with 75% of our DVR recording !

Big fan of James Patterson, really enjoyed the show! Maybe it will come back as a mid-season filler. But, I just read Mr. Patterson’s “Michael Bennett” character from
Step on a Crack is in development for fa future show, along with the remake of
Streets of San Francisco. Here’s the link:

ABC - shame on you. This series could have had the pulling/staying power of a Law and Order……….you goofed and didn’t even have the courage to announce the cancellation on your web site!

I agree wtih people here. Three of my favorite shows cancelled, now there is no reason to watch abc. CBS and NBC here I come!

    katy Says:

This show was SO much fun to watch. Shame on you ABC….. Whatever momentum this should could have had or gained back was derailed by the writer’s strike. Then you gave them two episodes and called it good? Bad move. At the start of last season, you became my favorite network - so many great shows. Now I don’t enjoy or connect with any of your shows……

    brenda Says:

WoW three of my favorite shows with major cliff hangers in 2 and you just dump them??? WHAT??? It’s like getting to the end of a good book and the last page has been torn out…. VERY frustrating!

I have watched alot of show on abc, and yes I am tierd of every show that I start to get into you cancel it Womens Murder Club, Men In Trees, October Road, The Nine.I also watch alot of show on nbc at least they keep their shows on long enough so that you can enjoy them and get the closer that you need from a series.
I will continue to watch nbc. I will not watch a new series with abc afraid it will be cancel so why watch it an dget hooked.

    Aimee Says:

I live in Australia, and my younger sister and I were on the edge of our seats every week after WMC, desperate to know what the next week would hold. It is a fantastic show, with a great cast, and has awesome potential. We have been hanging out waiting until the next season finally makes it to Australia. To find out that is it being cancelled is disappointing. I’d have to agree very strongly with Rosalie (May 26) seriously, who wants to watch stuff like the Supernanny and stuff like that? WMC is a great show. To cancel it, ABC, you’d have to be stupid. Stop airing stupid shows, and stop CANCELLING the ones that are actually worth watching!

  26. 38
    Diane Says:

What are you all thinking. I am an avid James Patterson fan and this series put faces to the characters, the stories, plots and actors were great. Angie Harmon was great as Lindsey. Please reconsider!!!!!!

  27. 37
    Bitter FAn Says:

I am very angry that this show got cancelled!! I think this show did great things for ABC. You cancelled this show, when in actuallity it was very difficult for veiwers to know when it was playing because of the writers strike. I think you need to give this show a second chance!! But if not, I am a follower and will be heading to CBS!!

  28. 36
    Tiffany Says:

Im wondering if another network will bring WMC or MIT back, I sent an email to TNT (a network that rarely cancels anything) and one to ABC to see if there is anything to be done. THESE SHOWS WERE GREAT. A lot better then some of the **** still on TV.

    julbug Says:

I LOVED this show! One of the classiest shows on TV…thanks a lot….

  30. 34
    Coffee House Spirit Says:

Perhaps if everyone got a petition to boycott ABC and sent it to ABC and various sponsors, Maybe they would stop canceling such excellent shows.

ABC has nothing left to watch - check out CBS.

This was one of the best shows on TV. Why kill the good stuff?

  32. 32
    Faith Says:

I cannot believe this MIT, OR and now WMC what is ABC doing?!! I am absolutely upset and out raged. That was a really good show. I look forward to each each week. I hope they reconsider and bring it back.

    Carolina Says:

I can`t believe this! WMC rocks, it`s a great show and they are cancelling it. No wonder why they suck

  34. 30
    Rosalie Says:

Do the TV executives think that just because you are over “49″ you don’t buy clothes, cars, etc. You idiots! You took off a good show. I am a James Patterson fan and I thought the TV series showed women that women can take care of themselves and do a damn good job of doing it. You take off this good show and leave on such dumb shows as Super Nanny and The New Adventures of Old Christine. Who wants to watch those dumb shows? ABC, I am really disappointed in you.

  35. 29
    Natalie Says:

I’m an Aussie so I watch this show on our Network 10 and I’m shattered that this show is being cancelled! It was an excellent show that had a strong female cast, not the type that was celebrated in Sex and the City and then repackaged and reproduced as Cashmere Mafia! Bring it back, it was awesome!

  36. 28
    Megan Says:

    I really loved this show!

  37. 27
    danny Says:

started to watch this great show late and on back of my mind who could be stupid enough to cancel this show?ahhhhh of course!!abc, how many of my shows have you canceled throughout the years to the point no one is gonna watch anymore,I am hoping someone else picks it up,hell I’ll watch lifetime if its on there

  38. 26
    blankbrenda Says:

Women’s Murder Club was great. Finally something on tv that adults can enjoy.
So tired of the same old shows with basically the same old premis. Get real. Your older viewers stay at home more and are more loyal once there is somthing good to watch. Bring back the ladies and give this show a chance.

  39. 25
    James E. Says:

This show was good, maybe not great but definately worth watching. After the writers strike things went bad quickly, although damage control was implemented by ABC the rating just fell. So it tells all of us TV viewrs that RATINGS are where it is at.
But I am returning to CBS.

  40. 24
    Natalie Says:

Womens Murder Club!! You need to cancel the Executive’s at ABC contracts not this show.
    What are you thinking?????

  41. 23
    Mrs. Bear Says:

No wonder you can’t keep viewers you cancel every good show you put on.
Womens Murder Club was the best ABC has had in a long time. The last time
I get hooked on a show on your station.

  42. 22
    AB Says:

This show was outstanding. I can’t believe ABC is cancelling it. First the writer’s strike screwed things up, then they moved this show to a new night and time but didn’t bother to let the viewers know. Hard to tune in to watch a show when you don’t know when it’s on. I am extremely disappointed in ABC. I guess I won’t be watching ABC anymore. With the cancelation of this show, they don’t have anything else worth watching. I’ll stick with CBS.

  43. 21
    Eric Says:

I’m a black dude from the ghetto, and I liked this show. So please tell me who dumb idea it was to cancel it? The writer’s strike messed up everything, but if u had the WMC come back for a 2nd season, the ratings would have been better.

  44. 20
    Beverly Says:

The network just needs to find the right time slot, not kill the series. As a crime/drama afficionado, I loved the show. My husband, who gets tired of the myriad shows of this nature that I watch even enjoyed it. The ONLY reason I didn’t watch the end of April and beginning of May episodes is because I ddn’t know they were on! It was switched from Friday night (which I preferred) to Tuesday. There was not enough advertising to let the viewers know. There are plenty of show that don’t do well in the first season, only to become very strong in the second. I hate that we’ve apparently lost this one. Please reconsider!

  45. 19
    KKK Says:

“Women’s Murder Club” is a very nice, entertaining and funny TV series. And I think it has a strong potential to grow still better in a 2nd season. So please don’t kill this show!!! (and, BTW, I am male).

I never look at abc primetime, the shows they have suck except for wmc. I do however
have to soap opera’s on daytime. ABC wake up get rid of some of the reality shows.
I might bring my family back to abc.

  48. 16
    Annmarie Says:

This was the best show on television this year. What did they think was going to happen when they put it up against a show in the same genre that’s been on for 8 years? They had solid ratings on Friday night. Network television is nothing but stupid reality shows with a couple of primetime soaps. Law and Order has been so successful and this had the potential for the same. What a mistake.

    Lindsey Says:

One of the best shows ABC had this season.. It was just getting good and now they killed it.. They never know a good show when it is sitting right in front of them. All shows have decreased in ratings because of the stupid writers strike.. it takes time to get viewers back especially when the network switches the time and day slot of the show. If people didnt catch the change to Tuesday nights, they might have thought it never came back after the strike. BRING BACK WOMEN’S MURDER CLUB!!!!!!!!! This is why I have been watching more and more reality shows.. they cancel all the good ones…

Womens Murder Club is a gem!!! I have not missed one episode, I am “hooked”. Please do not cancel this program. What ever you would replace it with I WILL NOT watch……

  58. 6
    demeter94 Says:

The reception was mixed only in so far as male critics mocked it, male viewers hated it, and thosr are the people networks covet to. They are not interested in women’s opinion.

A blatant case of misogyny killed Women’s Murder Club.

  59. 5
    joye Sharp Says:

When CW cancelled the Gilmore Girls last season, I took it really hard. The show was superb. None of my friends ever caught on to the show, but when a few friends decided to check me out and watch my 7 seasons of episodes they fell in love with it. Edgy, great writing, great cast. It had so much. I was devastated when it went off the air. It was one of the best shows to ever hit the TV screen. My friend and he daughter love the show and can’t wait to get the next season. But when I saw Women’s Murder Club, I told my husband that maybe there was hope for TV afterall. It had an excellent story line with the four women who had so much synergy and concern for one another. I loved this show. Given half a chance, this show would have enentually grabbed enough audience. Why does the good stuff go, only to leave shows that make us feel trashy just watching them. My son loves Scrubs (he’s 17) but I won’t even watch it. Its’ humor elludes me., but good old ABC has got for next season. Do the TV producer idiots only care about money? The obviously don’t care about substance, integrity, intelligent plots, interesting people, and women who may not be wear a size 1. . Forty percent of Americans are sitting in a church on Sunday. I am one of those people who has money to buy things you advertize. The raciest thing I watch is Mash, another treasure. The Paladinos, who wrote the Gilmore Girls, are the kind of writers most producers would be lucky to have on board, but their current show that has a aging older sister who wants her younger sister to carry a baby for her (forgot the name) is a piece of garbage. Did Amy Paladino sell out and create stuff the idot producers wanted? Does anyone care about average middle aged family members? It’s getting to the point that food, the discovery and the history channels are the only things we watch. Growing up, I remember watching great shows all through the week. The only show I have left is Numbers on Friday nights. Intelligent, great cast, non-offensive. It isn’t tripple G-rated, but it’s real and relevant. What a concept. Please keep this information to yourself. If a producer knows that somebody over 40 likes it, the show will surely hit the dust. I’ll bet you could take many screen writers and let them write to inspire, to teach, to show the little heros who are all around us, and shows something that leaves you feeling better, something that we would want out kids to see so they don’t become like the people they see on most TV shows.

    Heather Says:

I never liked ABC anyway. Nothing good on it. They canceled the only great show (WMC) they had.. oh yeah, I’m 26, gee your statistics are WRONG, especially since most people I know are 19-49 that watch it. I guess you don’t count us! Hopefully some network realizes the potential this show really has and picks it up, because it does NOT suck.

What is wrong with ABC. Do they not want people to watch their station? Me and many of my friends were thrilled with women murder club. We watched every episode and never missed one minute. The next day was all about womens murder club. I wil definitely boycott abc now and so will my friends. As far as I am concerned this show was the one thing abc had going for it. It was the only thing I watched on their network.
