Their ratings have ensured that they won't be cancelled this season and new syndication deals has all but ensured their safety for the next few years as well. Starring Simon Baker, Robin Tunney, Tim Kang, Owain Yeoman, Amanda Righetti, and Gregory Itzin, The Mentalist has been a big success on Thursday nights this season. Now, TNT has made a deal with Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution to air the show in syndication for an estimated $2.2 million an episode. According to the pact, TNT will start running the show weekly beginning with the 2011-12 season. At the end of the present season, there will be 46 episodes of The Mentalist. The lucrative syndication deal ensures that the show will continue for at least one more season and, barring any strange twist of fate, for a lot longer. NCIS: Los Angeles, which stars Chris O'Donnell, LL Cool J, Linda Hunt, and Peter Cambor, debuted just seven weeks ago as a smash hit. In a remarkable move, it's already been signed for a syndication deal as well. CBS Television has licensed the drama for a syndication run on USA Network. Under the new deal, USA has agreed to pay an estimated $2.2 million per episode for the drama. The cable channel will start running episodes on a weekly basis starting September 2011 and can run installments five days a week beginning in Fall 2013. This all but guarantees that NCIS: Los Angeles will be on the air for at least three seasons and very likely more. Because the show is produced by CBS' in-house studio, the network has incentive to keep it going (ala Medium) even if the ratings drop off. Related posts:

Unfortunately, the news isn't as great as one might hope. The Los Angeles-based cop drama revolves around a group of officers from the LAPD. The Southland cast includes Benjamin McKenzie, Kevin Alejandro, Arija Bareikis, Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King, Michael McGrady, Tom Everett Scott, Emily Bergl, Patrick Fischler, Lex Medlin, C. Thomas Howell, Emily Swallow, Carla Jeffery, Lori Alan, and Roxana Brusso. Southland ran for seven episodes last spring on NBC. The show had a decent start but the numbers started to fade as the weeks progressed. That decline seemed to coincide with NBC's decision to order another season. Last month, with The Jay Leno Show filling the network's 10pm timeslot, NBC decided to cancel the series before it returned. Part of their reasoning was that Southland felt too dark for the network's earlier hours. Production on Southland's second season was shut down after six episodes and NBC would reportedly have to pay hefty cancellation fees for not following through on their 13 episode order. Each episode of Shark Tank spotlights entrepreneurs and inventors who are looking for capitol to help fuel their dreams. They pitch their ideas to successful business people Robert Herjavec, Kevin O'Leary, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin Harrington, and Daymond John, otherwise known as "the Sharks." If they're interested, the Sharks offer to invest their own money but typically want a bigger piece of the pie than the inventor has in mind. The series is based on a UK program called Dragons' Den and the first of 10 episodes premiered on ABC on August 9th. The ratings weren't anything to crow about during the summer and were expected to drop even lower opposite new fall programming. Surprisingly, the numbers have actually started to rise in the past few weeks. Would that be enough for the network to invest in more episodes? Related posts:

Apparently the San Francisco economy is going to miss it as well. Trauma follows a group of first responder paramedics in the San Francisco area. The high-action medical drama stars Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney. The show's been struggling in the ratings from the start and NBC announced last week that the network wouldn't be ordering any more episodes. Though many shows have been set there, Trauma is the first show to be completely filmed in the City by the Bay since Nash Bridges went off the air in 2001. Before that, there was Midnight Caller and Streets of San Francisco. As with many out-of-town productions, the filming of Trauma hasn't all been smooth sailing. Plans to film the series in San Francisco nearly got derailed after the pilot. Productions can typically get rebates from local government to entice shooting in their area. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors reportedly changed their program so that rebates went to film productions. The Trauma pilot was ineligible and NBC was none too pleased after spending $8 million on it. Things eventually got worked out and the network okayed local production of the 12 additional episodes. Around that same time, Mayor Gavin Newsom came under criticism for taking campaign contributions from an NBC exec. Later, the city had to spend an extra $270,000 for a big annual convention that's usually held in a facility that was rented out for Trauma. Despite some extra expenses and inconveniences to the locals, Trauma has very been good for the local San Francisco economy. It's estimated that $3-4 million per episode is spent in the area. That comes from payments of crew, police overtime, permits and catering. There are 150 people employed on the full-time crew, as many as 300 guest actors, extras, and other local labor as well. Now, a few months later, another channel is giving the show a second chance to make good. An animated series from King of the Hill’s Mike Judge, David Krinsky, and John Altschuler, The Goode Family revolves around a household where too much importance is put on living in a politically-correct way. It features the voices of Judge, Brian Doyle Murray, Dave Herman, Linda Cardellini, and Nancy Carell. After the show was cancelled by ABC, Krinsky and Altschuler told fans that they hadn't given up on the series and were working to find a way for it to continue. They wrote, "That was our first season. We will let all of you know as soon as we have our new network and time slot... This show has been the most creatively satisfying thing we have ever done and we look forward to continuing it." Now, it seems the good news has come through. According to the show's Facebook page, the animated sitcom is moving to Comedy Central in January 2010. The plan is to run the original 13 episodes and if they perform well, the cable channel will order a second round of installments. Related posts:

What about the others, like Heroes, Trauma, and Law & Order? None of the three shows have been performing particularly well but the network is committed, at least for now, to sticking with them. If the ratings for any of them become much worse, NBC could still reduce the season orders. All three are co-productions of NBC's corporate sister, Universal Media Studios, so that seems unlikely to happen. Things don't look quite as rosy though for some of the network's other programs. Heroes was expected to be one of the weakest players this season but, because of the rest of NBC's schedule, it's one of the stronger performers in the 18-49 demographic. As unlikely as it may seem, Heroes could live to see a fifth season. Law & Order is performing terribly this season, likely in part to the fact that it's now airing much earlier than it has for 19 seasons. The show's also running on Friday nights where viewership and expectations are lower. Still, the demo ratings are low. Creator Dick Wolf made financial concessions to ensure that the show was renewed last Spring so that it could tie with Gunsmoke for longest-running drama (for number of seasons anyway). With more than 470 episodes, there are plenty of episodes for syndication and it seems unlikely that Law & Order will be renewed again. Related posts:

Not surprisingly, the programmers have decided to pull the low-rated series from the schedule for November sweeps. They're being replaced by repeats of House and Bones which, sad to say, will no doubt perform much better. While one of the pulled series isn't really leaving and the other is already slated to return in December, this certainly doesn't help their chances for the future. In truth though, the shows' ratings have been killing them long before FOX made this schedule change. Dollhouse, which stars Eliza Dushku, Harry Lennix, Fran Kranz, Tahmoh Penikett, Enver Gjokaj, Dichen Lachman, and Olivia Williams, is the most high-profile among the three. Though the show's ratings didn't really justify it, FOX renewed the series for a second season last spring. The network seems to want to stay in business with Whedon and is doing what they can, within reason, to keep him happy. Based on the ratings, Dollhouse would have been dumped long ago if it was most any other series. Thankfully for the fans, FOX has committed to airing all of its episodes. That doesn't mean however that they'll be ordering any more or renewing it for a third season. Related posts:

The series is the network's second most-popular new drama of the season so will this move hurt the show? Showrunner and executive producer Dee Johnson is leaving the series but Michelle and Robert King, The Good Wife's co-creators and executive producers, are picking up her duties. Johnson was initially brought in because the Kings had limited experience running a show, having worked on ABC's short-lived In Justice and a few other projects. Johnson, on the other hand, is a veteran producer and has worked on numerous shows like Commander in Chief, Army Wives, Profiler, and the original Melrose Place. The network wanted to be sure things ran smoothly on Good Wife and hired Johnson to guide the series for the first 13 installments. There was no involvement by the original cast and it bombed at the box office. One of the positive things to come out of the studio's promotion was a TV special that paid homage to the original series. Hosted by John Larroquette, Lost in Space Forever presents a retrospective of the classic TV show and includes some little-seen footage from the show's history. June Lockart, Mark Goddard, Marta Kristen, Angela Cartwright, Bill Mumy, and Jonathan Harris are all interviewed and, though Guy Williams had passed away earlier in the year, his original screen test is included. The special would be a typical lightweight retrospective except for the fact that the producers went out of their way to make it extra special for the diehard fans. Related posts:

While ABC's other freshman sitcoms -- The Middle, Modern Family, and Cougar Town -- have all received additional episode orders, Hank has not. To add insult to injury, the comedy's now being replaced by a 43-year-old rerun. It's that time of year again and ABC is pulling out its venerable animated special, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Though we've all seen it before, the special tends to bring in very good numbers. Last year, Charlie Brown attracted 10.43 million and a 3.4/9 in the demo. That was down from 2007 when it brought in 11.4 million and a 3.8/11 in the 18-49 demographic. Of course, those numbers put Hank's performance to shame so it makes sense to replace the sitcom on Wednesday, October 28th. With any luck, a significant percentage of people who tune in will stick around to sample the rest of ABC's comedies. Related posts:

Remember, the most important thing to CBS and the sponsors is for people to watch the show on their television, while it's being broadcast.
