American Idol
A pop singing competition reality show that has become phenomenally popular.
Contestants (ages 16 to 29) are found via nationwide open auditions. The number of contestants is narrowed down, through subsequent single and group auditions, and are judged by record producers Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson and singing-star Paula Abdul.
In the final weeks of the competition, the judges critique performances but only the most popular singers (determined by audience votes) stay in the competition. At the culmination of the season, the most popular singer is named “American Idol.”
The series is hosted by Ryan Seacrest.
