Ten years ago, Chuck Darling (Kelsey Grammer) and Kelly Carr (Patricia Heaton) were co-anchors and had a turbulent relationship. Chuck moved on to better markets but, after 10 years, he’s fired from his posh LA job because of an embarrassing tirade that was captured on camera. Chuck returns to co-anchor his old newscast with Kelly and finds that their relationship is even more complicated than he expected.
Others in the newsroom are immature news director Ryan Church (Josh Gad), chauvinistic sportscaster Marsh McGinley (Fred Willard), under-appreciated field reporter Gary Crezyzewski (Ty Burrell), and sexy weather person Montana Diaz Herrera (Ayda Field).
