Wow… I m not living in US and we, the mortal souls from Asean countries usually only got to watch whatever series/comedies that have been syndicated by the american tv studios.
We are as curios as fellow americans as to why really good shows got kicked out suddenly for no reason. (I cant name any shows now coz theres too many)But, I am sure that GIlmore GIrls ratings are still good when they decided to axe it, right?right? Anyway, we realli dont know how things work in the States, but, I hope that We in Asean will got2 watch more interesting and quality comedies/series exported from the Stateside.FYI, Joan of Arcadia, No Six Feet Under (just to name a few) HAVE NOT BEEN BEEN aired in our country before. Too expensive, I assume…

I apologize if I’m posting of out of topic, but the problem is, what can people do about how television is run? For decades we’ve played pawns to executives’ whims about the moral fiber and constitution of the audience’s taste, but what they pander to is money. They pander to advertisers, to big stars, and how much either can make more money for them, not quality or legacy. Unless independent people create an independent network, then you continue to see them expend our time in the same manner as the music industry treats their own situation: 10% of the artists supporting the 90% and cranking out the same ole same ole to keep that treadmill running. It’s an outdated model of and for success, both in tv and music because it takes a huge market to support the big names and cannibalizes the small audience and artists.

Entertainment doesn’t necessarily need evolution, but it’s in dire need of a revolution, especially with other entertainment readily available and looking to fill the void.

Okay…so you took off Justice…what were you thinking? We are stuck with Extreme Makeover, Cold Case (not a bad show, just Lilly looks like she needs some blood in her veins) Deal or no Deal, geez…Justice was a great show. Victor had found his niche! The coolest thing was finding out what REALLY happened at the last! Brillant! I guess producers got stuck in THE OFFICE, fell down and hit their head, then went to SCRUBS, in need of medical attention, when UGLY BETTY came to rescue them, Moonlight “drew” some blood, (Maybe that’s what happened to Lilly)then that’s when LAW and ORDER came on the sceen. After they finished, Crossing Jordan jumped in, then took them to SIX FEET UNDER. WHEW! Straighten up producers, give those of us who actually like GOOD TV something to watch, AND enjoy for a change.

Nobody mentioned “Drive” on Fox. That was a pretty good show. Who won the competition? What happened to the kidnapped wife?

I’m glad “All of Us” was cancelled, but I would like to see “Half and Half” come back on. Who did Mona choose??? Cancelling “Lost” wouldn’t be such a bad idea. “October Road” actually held my interest. Whatever happened to “Thief” and “Heist”? Those were good shows! I miss “Heist” especially.

How do Networks get there Ratings?…

It would be nice if they would used the internet for fan feedback. Let us rate each episode and the series as a hole (Oh wait there are many site that do that now). Even look at how many people seeding and leaching it on the P2P networks. That does show witch shows people wont to watch. Type the name of the series in Google and Yahoo within ” “. See how many fan sites show up.

Why are the Networks just killing shows without moving them to a different time slot or day of the week first? Why not start new series as miniseries 4-6 episodes each then use the internet for feedback. “The 4400″ started that way.

I don’t think the networks give any of these shows enough time. You see four or five episodes and then they cancell. What’s up with this kind of mindset. I was really a fan of crossing Jordan, it was different from the other crime shows. Can anybody tell me how you can cancel after 4 episodes. And the other thing is they just take the show off and no body knows why. There’s got to be a better way of handling this.

I really don’t think there is a surefire method to determine how well a show is doing. The Neilson ratings seem based upon the likes and dislikes of those few who have a box in their homes. Networks pit new shows against older “proven” shows in the hopes they will draw viewers away.

I have digital cable tv and I use a splitter to feed two VCRs (more technology going the way of the dodo bird). I watch one show in any given time slot and tape up to two more shows I can watch later.This way I have the opportunity to watch pretty much everything I want to and can then filter down the poorer shows that are a waste of air time.

One suggestion I would offer anyone producing shows is to stagger the commercial breaks. I love my remote. When a commercial break comes, I start flipping to something else. If it’s something I might like to watch I wouldn’t be able to sample it with the other station airing commercials at exactly the same time.

Note to the Networks. Don’t keep burning the viewers. Keep us in the loop. Tell us what you intend to do. Maybe you could have interactive reporting using the cable system. Consumers could tell you how they rated the shows, and their time slots.

I just located this thread and wanted to add my voice of support to Justice and Smith. I eagerly waited for both of these shows to premiere and immediately loved them. They were both non-standard. They made you think and kept you interested. It is such a shame to have them both gone so quickly. I wish the execs would give shows more of a fighting chance. BTW, I hate how they’ve broken up the television program seasons, too many shows get lost in the shuffle and it just plain sucks. Rant over.

what about brian? that’s the only show I liked on channel 7. and there are way to many reality shows on all channels-supernanny & wife swap for instance are so dumb-channels should keep shows like nine, 3lbs, 6 degress, etc. these shows were on and off so fast I never got to see any of them. and stop showing reruns in the middle of the season–seems like the length of the series on any show is getting shorter and shorter. I could go on and on and I’m sure alot of people agree with me.

I loved this show and watched it from its premier. It was cancelled because when the WB and UPN merged into “the new CW” they had to cut basically half the shows out. It came down to Veronica Mars vs Everwood. Everwood lost. I hate Veronica Mars.

And I agree with all the crappy TV that is on yet good shows get cancelled pretty much every year. Did that show The Lottery get cancelled? It must have because I haven’t heard about it since it aired the first maybe 4 episodes. 2.5 Men is a horrible show, along with half of all the other television shows that get kept.

agree w/ Jim. I haven’t forgiven FOX for how they treated FIREFLY. It was good enough for another studio to make it into a major motion picture, but not good enough for Fox TV. Utterly ridiculous. It’s still the best half-season of television I have either seen via broadcast or own on DVD.

I loved 3Lbs. I don’t have any idea what these networks are thinking by keeping a show for only 3 episodes. If money is the issue, maybe they should stop paying the very successful sitcom stars millions per episode and put back some of the good shows that never had a chance to gain fame but most likely would, given the chance. There’s no such thing as instant success. People have lives and loyalty is earned.

I’m going way back here but the one show that NEVER got a chance that was way ahead of most shows similar to it was Firefly. It was such a good show they made a movie out of it. How many shows that were cancelled their first season ever became a movie? I can’t think of any.

Fox is ridiculous for cancelling shows without giving them a chance.

If you like sci-fi, go find a few episodes of Firefly to watch. You won’t be disappointed

I don’t understand why they cannot port underperforming serial drams to USA or FX or whatever. I always find it strange that they cut shows that are being watched by 9 million people and replace them with re-runs of CSI or law and order. I cannot imagine that the re-runs will garner much advertising revenue.

I find it utterly amusing that the network execs think they are one of only ten channels on TV like in the old days. They seem to have no grasp of the fact that it takes about 20 minutes to succesfully navigate through the 200 + channels I have on my digital cable (so that is like missing a sitcom right there.) If they came off as a network that believed in their productions they would afford us the opportunity to enjoy a show more than just twice, and on top of that, on a steady basis with one night and one time rather than the special event switch up. Honestly, I’ve been catching up with some great movies on Sundance and IFC rather than watching TV’s Hottest Network, Most Watched Network and The Awful awful terrible reality TV. The only TV “dates” I make no compromise for was/are 24, Sopranos, Deadwood and well, that’s it. I tried to watch the Nine, but it lost my interest, and I DVR’d it too. Oh and another awful mistake by FOX–you removed Arrested Development. I could have easily watched more episodes of this show for another 5 more years. You decision makers wouldn’t know a good thing if it ran over you.

Just goes to show exactly where Fox execs have their heads. Justice was a very, very good show. With so much garbage on the air, a show that attracted younger viewers and older viewers is a special thing. No, it didn’t always show up in the Nielson rating (what is that, their Holy Grail?) but a lot of people were hooked on it. Sometimes you have to Tivo something because you’re out.

When you think back to so many good shows being cancelled you have only one conclusion you can come to: TV execs are polling the wrong people and expecting the wrong results.

Simply pathetic.

“Justice” had to be the best series of the season. The original problem was that it was up against “Lost” & “Criminal Minds” both of which are top notch shows. Fox then moved it to Monday’s where it went up against Monday Night Football (and a couple of other shows) which did nothing for their ratings. As a last resort, Fox moved “Justice” to friday nights where it slowly died, thus ending a series which had the potential to be as great as the “CSI’s”. By the way, “Justice” was a Jerry Bruckheimer series and I found it odd that one of his series got canned. Thanks FOX! Freakin Morons!

I don’t understand where they get the ratings info anyway. They say the shows had poor rating, but then thousands of people say they loved them. With so many channels available to most people now, the big networks can’t expect every show to be a blockbuster, and yet that is what they do.
I like Lost but I’m getting tired of nothing making sense and it REALLY bugged me that they did a mid-season “finale” and a long break. I was following The Nine and now it’s probably gone. Last year I really loved Invasion. I also really liked Joan of Arcadia, which was cancelled because “not enough young people were watching” on Friday night. What do they expect on Friday night. I use the DVR and record all the show I want to see because, honestly, none of the ones I like are on at the best time for me.
The network decision makers need to change the way the do everything. People pretty much gave up on comedies and they may just give up on tv entirely.

I think they were all worth cancelling except maybe 3lbs., I watched Vanished and Runaway but only because there wasn’t much else on. Ever feel like your watching the lesser of two evils? I think they at least should have given 3lbs. more than three episodes. Tucci could have probably reigned in a lot more than expected with time.

The network scheduling totally sucks! Go back to the “old days” when the scheduling worked! I only watched Justice from this list but I’m ticked off that it’s been cancelled. If it weren’t for TiVo, I wouldn’t be able to watch most of my shows because they’re always trying to compete with another show. This is for all the devoted fans of “The Nine”. Alright, so every year adult t.v. viewers find less and less available to them in terms of intelligent programming. But once in a while a truly great drama does come along and this season it arrived in the form of an original, well-acted and well-written drama called “The Nine”. The perfect show for a more mature audience – an audience with the intelligence and patience for gradual character and story development. A smart show where the viewers can challenge themselves to figure out just what did happen in that bank and try to do this before everything is eventually revealed. But now its fans aren’t even sure if the entire story will even be revealed as this extraordinary show sits in limbo on hiatus. Hitaus for this incredible adult-oriented dramatic series while idiotic shows such as “Supernanny”, “Wife Swap” and “Lost” remain on the air? C’mon ABC…don’t you want to have any intelligent viewers tune in to your network (remember that half the country did not vote for “W”). Or perhaps you just don’t want your sponsors to have our business? If there’s room for all these simple-minded reality shows then there has to be at least one hour a week available for “The Nine”. So, in the tradition of almost cancelled shows such as “Seinfeld”, “MASH”, and “St. Elsewhere”, devoted fans around the globe have kept this show from being officially cancelled and will continue to fight for its return. Its worth it!

I agree with all that is said here. Mostly with the one who stated that they watch their second best in the summer when it’s all re-runs. That worked for me. Two good shows clash at the same time, so you pick one and watch the other in summer. Now?!!! And to me there isn’t any good shows on Mondays and Fridays. This competing for time slots and days really messes you up. Bottom line they don’t care about the viewiers.

Well, it took me a while to finally figure it out! Instead of watching new shows every fall on the networks. I’ll spend my evenings catching up on the hundreds of great old movies I’ve missed over the last 50 years. At least I’ll be able to enjoy a great story from beginning to end without it being yanked and I will not feel like a fool for totally wasting my time on mysteries, dramas and characters that will never have their stories told. I’ll wait until the best series come out on DVD and watch them after they are completed. I hope the networks catch on that we’re sick and tired of the way they jerk us around. WASTE OF TIME!!!!!!! Networks should sell ads at 25% of the price, air them after midnight in lieu of the paid advertising the local affiliates sell in 30 minute blocks, people would tivo them, sooner or later Nielsen can monitor that and they could literally have a pipeline of show data and decide what to bring into play again in the summer based on real numbers, just an idea.

Annoying. Frankly, if shows are going to go on for 6 or 9 episodes and then cut like that I’m going to stop watching new shows. There is nothing worse on TV than seeing a half-solved crime show or drama. Starting next season, I may just watch reruns that I know will be completed.

Rick, Yes Surface was cancelled too. That was earlier in the year, then they released them all on DVD not as the first season, but as ‘The Complete Season’.

The networks are shooting themselves in the foot pulling series so soon. I purposely did not watch any of the new serial-type shows (like the Nine, Vanished, Kidnapped) because I had been burned before by networks killing shows and leaving no resolution. The fact that they did indeed gas all of those shows makes me continue to ignore shows like this in the future.

The networks have created this themselves, series used to air regularly – same bat time, same bat channel, every week – so you KNEW when you would see the next new episode. A season also had about 26 episodes, and reruns started in the summer. So, in the summer you could watch your 2nd choice in that primo timeslots. But when that started changing – the shortening of the “season”, mixing of reruns into mid-season, interruption of the season with some other show, moving timeslots hoping for a 1 pt increase in the ratings – I stopped caring about most network shows. I can’t predict when my favored show is going to be on, or if it will be a new episode, and I am not going to search for it every night. Even I have better things to do with my time…

Reminds me of couple other shows being cancelled like Futurama and Family Guy. Fox pulled them because of low ratings, well it was hard to watch them when they were supposed to air when Sunday football ran over, so of course, nobody watched them.

Last year, I really got into Invasion on ABC, and they cancelled the show. It started slow and jumped really quickly into people knowing about the Invasion which I think was the downfall. Still was a great series though.

Cancelling Six Degrees….what a boneheaded move. Sheesh…and Justice?? Another good show that deserves to live. Theres sooo many other turkeys they could have shot…. nooo… what can you do? Do what i do and more and more people do, download the shows online, stop watching TV….Vote with your eyes, you stop tuning into the idiot box because of shows you like being cancelled and networks lose advertsing dollars. Show them who’s boss.
