Back in the Game: Sitcom Cancelled by ABC

Back in the Game sitcomABC has decided not to order any more episodes of Back in the Game, their Wednesday night sitcom. The network initially ordered 13 episodes and filming was completed yesterday.

Co-creator Robb Cullen broke the news about the cancellation on Twitter. He wrote, “So, ABC has decided NOT 2 move forward w @BackInTheGameTV 2 all of u fangles and friends, I can’t begin 2 thank u for all of ur support.” He later indicated that the remaining seven unaired installments are expected to be broadcast.

Airing out of The Middle, Back in the Game follows a single mother (Maggie Lawson) and her son (Griffin Gluck) who move in with her gruff father (James Caan). Despite having no experience, the boy desperately wants to play baseball so his mom, a former All Star, gets roped into coaching a new team of misfits. Others in the cast are Lenora Crichlow, Ben Koldyke, Kennedy Waite, J.J. Totah, Cooper Roth, and Brandon Salgado.

The sitcom debuted in late September to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.01 million viewers. Unfortunately, the numbers have been dwindling downward since then.

What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Back in the Game has been cancelled? Did you enjoy the show? Will you watch the remaining episodes?

Well of course it was cancelled….No violence, sex or nudity…Gives an insight as to what kind of a world we live in today… How many shows can you watch with the whole family.. So sorry for all the small minded people who thought it was corny….They’re right, it’s so much better watching people getting murdered, raped, tortured, drugged up, and killing people just because they’re bored… Wake up America and look where we’re headed… Ahhh to go back to the good old days, when you could , watch TV with your whole family, and actually enjoyed the time together… “Happy Days” “Father Know Best” even “Leave it to Beaver”…Corny maybe, but a hell of a lot better than what’s on TV now.. OK I feel better now that I vented my feelings…Sorry for the cancellation of Back in the Game…It wasn’t given a chance…

My husband only watches sitcoms. Back in the Game actually made him laugh. He probably hasn’t laughed at a sitcom since Seinfeld. Bummer to hear about the cancellation!

Well, the pinheads have struck again! “Back in the Game,” like most new TV shows, has to have a chance to establish itself. It’s the kind of show that grows on you, and ABC has not given it that chance. Of course, it has a terrific cast, an interesting premise, and it’s a show the entire family can watch, so OF COURSE ABC cancels it. No wonder more and more people drop network shows and go to HBO, etc.

That sucks! Back in the Game was a great show, my husband and I loved it! James Caan, Maggie Lawson and the kids had great chemistry…..I’ve never seen an episode that was bad. It figures – no nudity, no love scenes, no vulgar language, a good clean comedy with a bunch of misfit kids……guess that’s why “so-called adults” didn’t like it. Shame on you ABC!

A great family shows with values and morals. Lacking in many TV shows today. Perhaps another network or cable channel will pick it up and give the cast a chance. So much better than reality or talent shows which are too prevalent today. I certainly will watch the remaining episodes. ABC has slipped up canceling this one.

This is a great show, and you bet I will be watching the rest. Agree, finally, a family show that everyone can watch with humor and some life lessons. That is a shame it has been canceled. I hope another network is smart enough to pick this one up.

My wife and I loved this show, that is probably why it was canceled. It must not have had enough sex talk.

Good bye back in the game. Terrible premise to begin with. Now Maggie Lawson I am seeing a vision of your future. Almost like I’m “psych”-ic.

My husband and I really enjoyed the show and so annoyed that ABC let this show go. After the last episode of Back in the Game is aired I will not be watching ABC on Wednesday Nights anymore.
