Black Box: Has the ABC TV Show Been Cancelled?

Black Box TV show canceled or season two?ABC recently cancelled several shows (Mixology, Suburgatory, Betrayal, etc.) and renewed many others (Resurrection, Revenge, The Goldbergs, etc.). What about the new Black Box series that airs on Thursday nights?

The show revolves around a beautiful and brilliant neuroscientist (Kelly Reilly) who’s hiding the fact that she’s bipolar. The rest of the cast includes Ditch Davey, David Ajala, Terry Kinney, Ali Wong, David Chisum, Laura Fraser, Siobhan Williams, and Vanessa Redgrave.

The show debuted on April 24th to a poor 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.87 million viewers. The ratings have gotten even worse as the weeks have progressed. This week’s installment hit a new low with a 1.1 rating and 4.31 million.

While ABC hasn’t cancelled Black Box, they surely will. The ratings have just been too low to be renewed for a second season.

The question now is, “Will all of the episodes air?” There are nine episodes remaining. If the ratings keep going down, the network could easily pull the show and replace it with reruns. Hopefully they’ll either air or release them so the show’s small audience can see them.

What do you think? Do you think that Black Box should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Do you think ABC should air all of the episodes they have?

This show is truly amazing that we can show mental illnesses can coincide with your life. They did such a fantastic job showing mental illness is present and a part of life life and it doesn’t disable people or even hurt people. There is so much negativity about mental illness and that it only disables you, when in fact you can live with it. It’s doable. I am currently a grad student in public health and I felt this was such a good show on portraying mental wellness. I would love to see the rest of what was done. It’s fascinating what mental wellness effects & how one can live with it. If not ABC I would hope some network would renew this program. Very educational & interesting.

I really liked the show. I am also a Mental Health professional (nurse psychotherapist) and
thought this show did a very good job of presenting Bipolar Disorder. The story line was captivating and I was always looking forward to the next episode. I hope it is not cancelled…

BLACK BOX was one of the BEST new shows I’ve seen. As a mental health professional I can tellyou that Kelly Reilly did an extremely accurate depiction of an individual who is struggling with Bipolar 1 disorder. She deserves an award for her performance. I recorded almosts of the episodes in case I missed them or went to on demand. What is this
“low ratings” based on. Exactly how many people were polled and in what capacity? I’ve had enough of those ridiculous shows about models, movie stars , singing competitions etc. This show was entertaining as well as enlightening! PLEASE BEG ABC to continue next season.

All I can say is I agree. I too am a mental health professional and I work with several people who suffer from Bipolar. Her portrayal is accurate and I feel her pain and struggles as I watch the show. Please renew Black Box.

My husband and I love the show. It gives a deep understanding of the amazing minds we all have. It helps the layperson understand that the mind effects how we react to situations and that our brain chemicals can be effected by many factors. It lends an understanding of depression and bipolar conditions.

I love the show! As a licensed mental health counselor who works with individuals with a bipolar disorder dx, I applaud the work of Kelly Reilly and the shows writers who have taken on a difficult topic and presented its challenges so well.

Gloria… All 13 episodes have aired…. If you have ON DEMAND of some kind (if you happen to have cable and are paying for that option) you may be able to see episodes…. However, often episodes are only available for a certain amount of time. The more recent episodes are more likely to still be available for viewing than older ones.

The demographics tell it all-“failure” for the 18-49 year old viewers.
Finally an intelligent ADULT program centering on an actual and frightening disorder that affects many. Kelly Reilly is wonderful; her portrayal of this damaged, talented doctor makes me want to applaud each challenge she faces; some she overcomes, some she does not. I truly hope they at least air the additional episodes. Better yet, renew the show.
