Boss: Already Doomed to Be Cancelled?

Boss canceled? As Tom Kane continues to try to keep a grip on his city and life, the Boss TV series struggles to attract an audience. Will Boss be cancelled or renewed for a third season of Starz? That’s an even bigger challenge thank Kane’s.

Airing on Friday nights, Boss revolves around the Mayor of Chicago (Kelsey Grammer) who’s recently been diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disorder. Determined to remain in charge, he conceals the disease from everyone around him except his physician. The Starz TV show also features the talents of Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson, Troy Garity, Rotimi, Jonathan Groff, and Sanaa Lathan.

It’s no secret that the TV series struggled in its first season. Despite sporting some top talent, the viewers and ratings just weren’t there. Luckily for the cast and crew, the show was renewed for a second season weeks before the show even premiered. Had the cable channel waited to see how well Boss would perform before making a decision, it’s hard to believe we’d be seeing a second season now.

Last month, at The Television Critics Association press tour, Boss showrunner Farhad Safinia said, “I am completely aware of what the numbers are, and I’m heartbroken… It’s one of those things where you’d like more people to see what you’re doing… I do hope the audience comes to see it so we can tell the entire story. I think we just have to work on that assumption that we will get to do it.”

Should Boss be renewed?

The ratings were so low for the first season of Boss that they’re often very difficult to locate. We do know that Boss premiered last October to 659,000 viewers and by the middle of the run had fallen to 250,000.

Season two certainly hasn’t been bringing any better ratings. The August 24th installment drew just 229,000 viewers and the season has averaged only 310,000. Earlier this year, the second season of Spartacus averaged 1.35 million on Friday nights in the same timelot.

It seems highly unlikely that Starz will be bringing back Boss for a third season. These numbers are just incredibly small for an expensive scripted drama.

On the positive side, Safinia has indicated that they plot each season like a movie so that each has a beginning, middle, and end. While it’s very likely that Boss will be cancelled, at least the show’s loyal viewers will be given at least some kind of resolution by the end of the season. Season two wraps on October 19th.

What do you think? Do you like the Boss TV series? Why do you think it hasn’t caught on with a bigger audience? Should it be renewed for a third season or cancelled?

The reason why it hasn’t become an international hit, like some of the T.V. shows on stars is still a question that needs to be answered. It’s really hard to understand because i think it’s perfect. I believe it paints a picture of politics and how they work in a democracy’s. This show needs a another season it truely has a chance to be one of the best shows ever, given the time.

The show is fantastic and gripping with excitement.
We are all looking forward to Season 3 with Kelsey Grammar and his all star cast.
The writers keep coming up with amazing twists to the story and always catch you by surprise. Can’t wait until Season 3 in 2013.

If this award-winning show, with incredible actor playing, modern script theme and plot has low ratings, there’s 3 things you can do:

– fire the marketing promotion team
– sell it immediately to a free channel
– do both

For those living the US, do you believe that its destiny would have been better if the plot was about the Mayor of LA or NY? Just out of curiosity…

PLEASE bring back Mayor Kane for a third season!!! So good, so addictive! Would watch this series for years to come!!!

It is sad that such an intense show with a great storyline is doomed. This show always has you guessing what will happen next, which is more than most shows can do. It looks like only Mayor Kane himself could save this show… at the last minute no doubt while eliminating the execs who want to cancel the show.

I just watched the entire season 2 and I can’t wait for season 3. This show is amazing, it is like Rome’s political drama in modern time.

This is a powerful show. I think it needed more aggressive promotion. I could watch this show for 10 seasons.

My husband and I stumbled on the show while surfing the cable and once we started watching we were hooked. The show need promotion. The actors will carry the rest.

They probably want to cancel it because Kelsey is Republican. This is Chicago guys. It’s factual. I’ve lived here for 30 years. I don’t know why. Put it on a regular channel

Joe November 3, 2012 at 1:58 pm

Boy is this accurate if you know Chicago. Most people don’t have Starz Put it on CBS,NBCorABC It was never promoted. It’s very factual. I’ve been a Chicogan for 30 years.. And it is corrupt boy is it ever. Best show and actors on TV. You’re crazy if you don’t renew instead of the garbage you have now.

it is on a pay for view channel that has little else to offer. If this was on Showtime or HBO, it would be a big hit.

I am from the Caribbean and watch it all the time! Maybe they need to look at offering this show to an international audience! Its brilliant.
