Castle: ABC Orders Two More Episodes, Is the Show Safe from Cancellation?

CastleFans of Castle are getting some good news. ABC is ordering two additional episodes of the Monday night drama. Can fans finally relax?

Castle revolves around an egotistical novelist, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), who teams up with police detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) to solve crimes in the Big Apple. The drama also features Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Tamala Jones, Jon Huertas, and Seamus Dever.

Last spring, ABC showed some faith in Castle and renewed the series for a second year. This season, the show got off to a sluggish start but, even without the benefit of the Dancing with the Stars lead-in, has been gaining steam in recent weeks. On Monday, Castle hit season highs in both the coveted 18-49 demo (3.0 rating) and in total viewers (10.55 million).

If the ratings keep going in this direction, the show will certainly be renewed for a third year. It’s chances look even better once you consider all of the ABC shows that are either doing far worse (Better Off Ted, Scrubs, the forgotten, and The Deep End) or have already been cancelled (Eastwick, Hank, and Ugly Betty).

Should Castle get renewed?

In light of the ascending ratings, the network has decided to add two more episodes to the season, bringing the year two total to 24 installments. Fan site broke the news and it has been confirmed to us by a network representative.

ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson professed his love for the show at the recent TCA press tour, saying, “We’re excited by the show… Nathan is fantastic and I think his chemistry with Stana is great. I think tonally, there’s not a lot of shows on like it. Probably Bones is the only other show with that tone and we’ve seen what a success Bones has been. It’s a warrior for FOX.” He added, “Plus, Nathan is amazing and my wife has a major crush on him.”

The network is also planning another Castle tie-in book with Hyperion. The first book authored by “Richard Castle,” Heat Wave , spent 14 weeks on the New York Times Hardcover bestsellers list. The popularity of the book has sent Hyperion back to press eight times.

The second book will come out in September 2010, a month after Heat Wave is published in paperback. If the show’s ratings continue to look rosey, the third season of Castle will no doubt soon follow.

What do you think? Will Castle get a third season? Does the show deserve it or is there another show on the bubble that you’d rather see renewed?

Castle is a hour of good clean TV. He is a hoot with his daughter and Mom. His almost romance with her and his relationship the two side kick cops is great.

Please keep Castle going in its current state, the characters are great, wonderful chemistry and the story lines are both exciting and comical, what a fabulous (and winning) combination!! More, please, much more!!!!

Castle is the only really good crime show around these days. I love the entire cast and would hate to see the show canceled. Besides, nothing else good is on at the same time on Mondays and every episode makes me laugh. The characters are believable (unlike another show on at the same time) and I can relate to them too.

Ok, I was wrong about the network…mea culpa…it does not mean I am wrong about the show!!!

Ok, a Fed is brought in to investigate some murders and there was an explosion at Beckett’s apartment. I don’t think that’s the end…I just don’t see them killing her off like that!! After all, they have not yet made up their minds about cancelling. If they left it like this, there would be no way to continue next season. We’ve seen other explosions that looked fatal but were not…I am not willing to give up hope! If they do this to us, the only CBS show I’ll be watching is Dancing With the Stars. Yes, I like the show.
But I cannot believe that CBS will ignore a 99% YES KEEP CASTLE from its viewers.

I can’t believe this! Not only do we not get a new episode of CASTLE tonight, we do NOT even get a re-run!! What on earth prompted an ENTIRE EVENING of the bachelor wimping around trying to pick a bride for money?? Hopefully this is the last time we will ever have to boycott this network by avoiding a really bad programming choice, by a really out-of-touch programming director! PLEASE do not do this to us, ever again!
Just bring back Castle, PERMANENTLY, and you won’t ever have to be yelled at again! (unless, of course, you make more dumb choices!) Thank you in advance for respecting the intelligence of your viewing audience and giving us shows which reflect that respect.

Please keep Castle. I look forward to it every week and wish it were on every night. The actors and actresses are great. Nice plot every time, but a clean program. It is hard to find clean programs to watch any more. Please keep Castle around!

So, we are still asking the same question, to which nobody wants to provide an answer: Will Castle be renewed?? Is there anyone in authority who actually reads these posts, or are we just wasting our time? Is this a question of money? Is a quality show really too expensive to produce and therefore doomed to be replaced with some other mindless blither like The Bachelor?
When will we know?
I know that Fox has cancelled Saving Grace because they are not making enough on it, is that the case here?

admin February 17, 2010 at 5:56 pm

@Mary Sagor: ABC has not renewed the show yet but it looks safe. We should know by mid-May at the latest.

Mary Sagor February 17, 2010 at 6:27 pm

Thank you so much!! Is there something that we the viewers can do to ensure that it is renewed? I have told all my friends to watch it and let me know what they think. All have become as addicted to it as I am. What else can we do?
I DVR it when I am not at home, but have been told that DVRing a show does not help the ratings. So, other than that, what else is there? If I were working I would buy the book and the DVD set, but those items are not in my budget at this time.
Please, please have the good sense to keep the show, and let us know what else we can do.
Thank you for replying and letting us know that someone really does notice what we have to say about the programming!!

Mary, most importantly, keep spreading the word. Seems that almost everyone who watches for the first time after being introduced by a friend, family member, co-worker really enjoys the show, growing the audience is the best thing fans can do to help the show stick around. Giving ABC positive feedback is also helpful – full details & other ideas via the link

of all the crap on tv,this is by far the best show on.i hope they dont take this one off the air.if they do,big mistake.this show is almost as good as the national hockey league and beckett is a fellow canadian.

RV August 6, 2012 at 7:40 pm

As of August 2012, Castle is still going strong. They finally let Castle and Beckett get together, but it was the season 4 finale, and we’re waiting for the fall premiere of season 5 to see where it goes from there. BTW, Nathan Fillion is Canadian, too.
