There’s lots of data that the networks look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but the ratings are the main ingredient.
Wonder if your favorite’s already been renewed or cancelled? Visit our CBS 2011-12 show page.

A couple of notes about these charts:
The averages included in these charts are based on the final numbers, not the fast affiliate ratings that are typically reported the next morning. The final numbers become available about a day after the broadcasts or in some cases several days later. The chart are updated as the new data becomes available.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers (not total viewers) are what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating versus one with a lot more overall viewers.
Demo numbers are reported by Nielsen using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). We used to report averages that way but it ends up being hard to see any movement week to week. It can also be a little misleading since a show with a 2.35 average and a show with a 2.44 average will both round to a 2.4 rating.
In these charts, we’re including the demo average rounded to the 10th (2.4) as well as the 100th place (2.41) in parenthesis so you can get a better idea of how the average has been affected by the latest episode’s demo rating.
The letter grades are relative (kind of like grading on a curve) and are based on the individual network’s demo performance. All of the networks have very different gauges for success right now. (A successful show for The CW would get quickly cancelled on CBS.) Our system for coming up with letter grades isn’t perfect but it should still give you an idea of where the different shows stand.
*The grades for TV series that run on Friday and Saturday nights are weighted a little differently, to compensate for airing on little-watched nights.
What do you think? Are surprised by any of the ratings? Are any of your favorite shows in danger of being cancelled? Which should be doing better?
I agree with Laura. Gifted Man is a good show. I didn’t like it at first then I tried it again and fell inlove with all the charactors. Please give people another chance to try it again or for the first time, pleease don’t cancel Gifted Man or Person of Interest.
A gifted man……I absolutely love this show. Can’t believe it is jeopardy of being cancelled. Blue bloods another of my favorite and person of Interest. Let’s keep these shows on the air please.
A Gifted Man is one of the few shows worth watching on Fridays – or any other day. I hope it gets another chance – Please??!!
i love gifted man…with so much reality tv on today, this is a pleasant change. will probably take over from grey’s anatomy..i agree with another commenter, that if it was on during the week, more people would watch this show. friday night is a poor night for people being in to watch tv. please, please do not cancel this show….
Over 75,000 people like this show according to the likes on Facebook and you want to cancel this and make all those fans mad.
Love A Gifted Man please don’t cancel this show.
PLEASE do not cancel A Gifted Man, it is one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. The characters have grown so nicely over time and my husband and I really looked forward to watching this show. The actors are top notch, and rival NCIS cast members in their ability to interact so well. Perhaps Friday isn’t the best night for this show, although it works very well for us. CBS, please do not pull the plug on this, it’s the best new show on your network.
I see that Blue Bloods shows low ratings. I hope this doesn’t means that it will be cancelled. My family watch this every Friday and look forward to it. Show has wonderful characters.
I am terribly dissappointed that A Gifted Man has been cancelled ! What a bummer.
Finally a good, clean show that I liked and it’s gone! Some of the other ‘goof ball’ shows that remain on the air, I’m embarrassed to watch with my grandchildren. I’m VERY dissappointed.
Please don’t cancel A Gifted Man and Person of Interest. My 12 year-old and I enjoy watching these shows together.
I totally agree that A Gifted Man and Person of Interest are wonderful shows. Please try another night if you have to, but please save these shows.
I cannot understand why A Gifted Man has such low ratings. I don’t understand how the ratings are determined because I know a lot of people who watch it. It is a nice change from the crime solving shows. Plus I would like to see Michael and Kate get together. Maybe giving it a different night would make a difference. I hope it is not cancelled. It is my favorite TV show.
NCIS is also an A+ show!
It makes no sense to me 2 1/2 men which now sucks gets A++ and A Gifted Man gets and F what are the looking at when giving these ratings? Obviously nobody over the age of 40 or anyone with real intelligence is factor here or the ratings would be far different. A Gifted Man and Person of Interest are fantastic shows that I believe have a whole lot more people watching then the ratings posted here. Networks are messed up!
I agree with Laura the garbage of 2 1/2 men versus a gifted man and person of interest is hand down the loser the acting and intelligence of the plots and the carefully weaving of personal stories are my kind of programs . I am a little older and I personally do not go out on Fridays and Saturdays like the young people do . I welcome a challenge when watching a program. Baring the ridiculous commercials I am enjoying a little bit of TV a few nights of the week , If I can remember almost of the programs… Read more »

It’s hard to believe that A Gifted Man has such low ratings, perhaps since it’s new and on a Friday night people have failed to see it yet, enough to make a difference. It’s a great show, they pack a lot into one hour and the cast is perfect for this type of show. I sure hope the network trys moving it to a different night before cancelling it, so hard to believe the low ratings as it’s one of our favorite shows!
Please don’t cancel A Gifted Man, it is my favorite new show of this season and I know a lot of other’s who feel the same!
Why do all the good shows get cancelled?
