Deception: To Be Cancelled or Renewed for Season Two?

Deception on NBC cancelled or renewed? With Revolution taking a break, NBC decided to try a new Monday night drama, Deception. Has it been a ratings success for the network or will it end up being cancelled like so many of their other Monday night dramas?

On Deception, a wealthy party girl has been mysteriously murdered. Her childhood friend, now a San Francisco narcotics detective, is convinced by her former partner to go undercover into the wealthy world she thought she’d left behind. The cast includes Laz Alonso, Meagan Good, Victor Garber, Katherine LaNasa, Tate Donovan, Wes Brown, and Ella Rae Peck.

The series debuted in January to a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.66 million total viewers. Those were hardly impressive numbers and were less than half of what Revolution’s premiere drew a few months earlier. Year-to-year however, it was a big improvement over the ratings NBC was getting for Rock Center with Brian Williams.

In week two, Deception’s ratings dropped more than 20% to a 1.6 demo rating and 4.14 million. That was not positive — and the ratings kept falling. As we now near the end of Deception’s 11 episode run, the ratings seem to have stabilized at a 1.1 demo rating with about 3.3 million viewers.

Those numbers are terrible and certainly there’s no ratings justification for NBC to renew Deception for a second season. They cancelled shows like Chase and The Playboy Club and they had better numbers than Deception.

On the positive side, at least NBC aired all of the episodes. Unfortunately, viewers are unlikely to ever get their storyline questions answered.

But, what do you think? Should NBC stick with Deception and give it another shot next year or should they cancel it instead? Why do you think it didn’t catch on with a bigger audience?

Hey now, this is one great show so please give it a chance!!! It didn’t have a lot of pre-airtime advertising to whet the interest o the public, as do so many other shows do. I think that kinda set it up for failure from the beginning. It’s a great storyline to continue with – certainly better than a lot of other shows that have continued to run – so give it one more chance before killing it. And, maybe, just maybe, some p.r. before air date might help a whole lot.

This show is amazing :-) even my boyfriend started watching it after the first episode!!! I couldn’t fall asleep before watching each episode. I think NBC should renew Deception because in this show there’s a mix of all type of scenarios that are all close to the reality… It’s interesting to be able to watch something different than all the supernatural, unrealistic boring shows many networks provide… Deception season two must come out!

My wife and I loved the show…the acting by the star is not that great…but she had to be undercover and they gave her way too much to do…this guy that guy, sneaking around all the time and could not make her face react correctly with the problems she had undercover.
Don’t cancel, move away from series hits, put it on their alternate networks.

Hope it doesn’t cancel. Think it suffered because of the series “The Following” witch aired the same time. Plus, the last show left us hanging..if they cancel it, then it should of had a proper ending.

I love this show too and have watched every episode. It really pulled me into it. Do Not Cancel or if NBC does not want it they should put it on another network like everyone else is stating.

Please, please renew Deception. Don’t be so quick to write off Deception. Scandal was also written off, but now it’s on top. If Deception is renewed for a second season I know it’ll be a big hit like Scandal. ABC, if you want to see a show the fans believe in despite critics, so believe the fans when we say Deception is the show to take a chance on and renewed. The cast is fantastic and very intriguing. Deception will be one of your hit shows in the future when the critics’ choice will continue to drop in the future. It doesn’t need a brain scientist to see Deception deserves to be renewed.

Scorpga please do not cancel!!! It is true what scorpgal said you cannot go off of ratings based on live viewing. I watch shows solely thru hulu plus because I work nights and can’t watch my shows when their aired. And so do many other viewers soto kill it off saying it only has 3 mill viewers is not just. There are so ,any more viewerd you just havig taken into account of alllll the people who watch tv online now n days!! Get with the ages and stop cancelling my good showd dammit. And you know why all those other shows gets ratings and supposed lived viewwers b.c their old and they don’t watch tv the way younger generation does these days, through the internet. Thats why you see all relatable “teen” showd that are good gertting cancelled’ the ringer, secret circle, the carrie diaries, beaty and the beast, emily owens, etc.
