Deception: To Be Cancelled or Renewed for Season Two?

Deception on NBC cancelled or renewed? With Revolution taking a break, NBC decided to try a new Monday night drama, Deception. Has it been a ratings success for the network or will it end up being cancelled like so many of their other Monday night dramas?

On Deception, a wealthy party girl has been mysteriously murdered. Her childhood friend, now a San Francisco narcotics detective, is convinced by her former partner to go undercover into the wealthy world she thought she’d left behind. The cast includes Laz Alonso, Meagan Good, Victor Garber, Katherine LaNasa, Tate Donovan, Wes Brown, and Ella Rae Peck.

The series debuted in January to a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.66 million total viewers. Those were hardly impressive numbers and were less than half of what Revolution’s premiere drew a few months earlier. Year-to-year however, it was a big improvement over the ratings NBC was getting for Rock Center with Brian Williams.

In week two, Deception’s ratings dropped more than 20% to a 1.6 demo rating and 4.14 million. That was not positive — and the ratings kept falling. As we now near the end of Deception’s 11 episode run, the ratings seem to have stabilized at a 1.1 demo rating with about 3.3 million viewers.

Those numbers are terrible and certainly there’s no ratings justification for NBC to renew Deception for a second season. They cancelled shows like Chase and The Playboy Club and they had better numbers than Deception.

On the positive side, at least NBC aired all of the episodes. Unfortunately, viewers are unlikely to ever get their storyline questions answered.

But, what do you think? Should NBC stick with Deception and give it another shot next year or should they cancel it instead? Why do you think it didn’t catch on with a bigger audience?

Please do not cancel this program. The story line is intriguing and the actors are fantastic! If NBC cancels and leaves us viewers hanging with so many unanswered questions, people will shy away from ever wanting to watch a new series with this network again! Please finish the story….

I love the show and those of us who like it need to write letters to NBC to keep the show on the air. How can they just leave us hanging just as it was getting so…. good?

The storyline lost its oomph after a few weeks. The show needs new writers. It became unbelievable. Don’t miss the show at all.

This show so reminds me of Veronica Mars (which I loved) that had enough steam to last for more than one season and they were just teenagers…if other crimes/storylines were involved that ultimately tied back to Viv’s murder then I think it work out beautifully. Even another undercover law enforcement agent with a different angle (investigating a different crime) would be interesting as both played their roles to get information and close their respective cases. This show has a lot of angles that could be explored and a good cast. Please try to actually develop a show and not continue to throw out good shows. The world needs more developed dramas and a lot less reality/reality-esque shows!

Please keep this program. The storyline is great and there is lots of drama. I like the pace in which it moves. I love to watch drama that keeps you watching;you have to stay tuned in so that you don’t miss the introduction of a character. That introduction will come into play at some point in the production and make you go — Aah, ooH, so that’s who and what he/she did. I like wondering what role each and every character will play versus things being so predictable. It came with “drama”. There are a lot of other shows that should be cut so that can stop wasting the viewers time. But a drama like “Deception” with a good mix of characters, mixed-race love scenes, etc. usually is cancelled because there are a lot viewers out there that are still hypocritical. So cancellation is expected. It’s a shame we can’t just enjoy the art of acting and not focus on who is in the act of performing the art. So sad!!! So sad!!!

While I did enjoy watching the show, it doesn’t have enough steam to carry it through another season. This one trick pony just kept changing the focus from one character to another with no real continuity. While the cast was pretty good, the writing is what failed in this show. It would have probably made a very good 16 episode mini-series, but there isn’t enough there to be a successful multi-season series.
