Deception: To Be Cancelled or Renewed for Season Two?

Deception on NBC cancelled or renewed? With Revolution taking a break, NBC decided to try a new Monday night drama, Deception. Has it been a ratings success for the network or will it end up being cancelled like so many of their other Monday night dramas?

On Deception, a wealthy party girl has been mysteriously murdered. Her childhood friend, now a San Francisco narcotics detective, is convinced by her former partner to go undercover into the wealthy world she thought she’d left behind. The cast includes Laz Alonso, Meagan Good, Victor Garber, Katherine LaNasa, Tate Donovan, Wes Brown, and Ella Rae Peck.

The series debuted in January to a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.66 million total viewers. Those were hardly impressive numbers and were less than half of what Revolution’s premiere drew a few months earlier. Year-to-year however, it was a big improvement over the ratings NBC was getting for Rock Center with Brian Williams.

In week two, Deception’s ratings dropped more than 20% to a 1.6 demo rating and 4.14 million. That was not positive — and the ratings kept falling. As we now near the end of Deception’s 11 episode run, the ratings seem to have stabilized at a 1.1 demo rating with about 3.3 million viewers.

Those numbers are terrible and certainly there’s no ratings justification for NBC to renew Deception for a second season. They cancelled shows like Chase and The Playboy Club and they had better numbers than Deception.

On the positive side, at least NBC aired all of the episodes. Unfortunately, viewers are unlikely to ever get their storyline questions answered.

But, what do you think? Should NBC stick with Deception and give it another shot next year or should they cancel it instead? Why do you think it didn’t catch on with a bigger audience?

There are so many junky shows on TV now. Please please do not cancel the one good show on TV. It was nice not having a vulgar cartoon, a show about women and men in a mid life crisis or another news show. This was truly a show worth watching.

PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW!!!! There are still so many unanswered questions and the storyline keeps getting better and better with every week. I think it needs more hype to bring in more people but it is a very well written story.

Vania – I was thinking he same thing. I record hem and watch them one after the other. Makes for great suspense and awesome television watching! If there is word of cancellation, I for one am willing to get a petition going. It worked for other shows, it could work for this.

I liked the show I think they should give it one more season. That’s the problem with NBC they dump their shows too fast. They need to give the show time and the network. The magic of old can be create with some patience. Everytime I hear about a show I should watch on this station it’s gone. I liked DO NO HARM and before it could catch on it was cancelled after only two shows really come on. When you are behind the other networks you are going to have give it time.

I liked this show. the actors were new to me, except for Tate Donovan and John Laroquette. Both of these actors put in terrific performances, no matter what project they are involved with. Deception should get another chance.

I love this show and I feel that it really was a joy for me to watched ever Tuesday. Monday is my wrestling day. That said, this show should totally b cancelled and here is what everyone is missing and I will put it in all caps: THE DAD WAS THE ONE WHO KILLED VIVIAN. Doesn’t it strike anybody that this is odd? I get the fact that they had to look for the clues and do other cases in the process till we all watch the dad being revealed here but come on. If your son or daughter had been killed, wouldn’t you not b surprised if the cops had questioned the mother or father first? I just don’t understand how this show lasted this long on a network that is lower in ratings than a channel that doesn’t even speak English. Show has a surprisingly long run but it is over.
