Everybody Hates Chris: CW Sitcom Cancelled, No Season Five

Everybody Hates ChrisIn the network’s commitment to get out of the “sitcom business,” the CW has cancelled Everybody Hates Chris. There won’t be a fifth season but luckily series creator Chris Rock beat them to the punch.

Everybody Hates Chris is loosely based on Rock’s early life and features Tyler James Williams, Terry Crews, Tequan Richmond, Tichina Arnold, Imani Hakim, and Vincent Martella.

The show’s been around for four seasons and its viewership has been in decline for awhile. It certainly didn’t help that, this season, the CW decided to strand the sitcom on little-watched Friday nights. Added to the fact that Chris doesn’t exactly match the network’s targeted demographic, it was obvious that the show’s days were numbered.

Rather than take a chance on not being able to give the show a proper ending, Rock decided to finish the show on his own terms. The season four finale revolves around Chris dropping out of high school, just as Rock did in real life. If the series had returned for year five, it could have explored his journey to do stand-up but as it is, the season finale still works as a last episode. There’s even a not-so-subtle nod to the famous Sopranos finale at the end.

Williams is currently pursuing a film course at New York University and is satisfied with the final episode. He told TV Guide, “If it ends here, we ended it the right way.” Rock agreed, saying, “It might not be a bad way to go.”

Are you upset or glad that the show won’t be back for season five?

Great show! I was always watched it on the internet though, due to the very very bad time slot it was given. CW, what the hell were you thinking? I really hope another network picks this show up, and gives it a proper day, and time slot that it deserves. I agree Cha “This is just TRAGIC!!! TRAGIC I tell you!” :)

That’s one of best series that i saw. Smart, funny, very real and true.
Would be interesting more episodes or a movie to explain what’s happened after finale of season 4.
Sad, very sad it’s over. Here in Brazil, still thrives. ;)

It’s sad that CW has cancelled this show. When I saw that they moved it to Friday nights, I knew something was going to happen. I swear, Friday night is the kiss of death for tv shows. I enjoyed this sitcom and sadly, I won’t be watching the CW because there is nothing that interests me on their primetime shows.

I too am sorry the show has been cancelled. I guess it was too “clean”. The only shows that seem to last now are the ones that are riddled with sexual undertones (and overtones). It brought back memories of a more wholesome time.

We really loved Everybody Hates Chris. We watched it every week…and we are white, middle aged without kids. It was entertaining and funny. We are sad it’s gone…but good for Rock getting to do it his own way. He was so underused on SNL…they should be kicking themselves. Rock has a documentary coming out this fall…I’ll definitely going to be watching. I think he’s the stand-up funniest comedian in the US.

I like the show. I started watching it again on Nick @ Nite…It sucks that they canceled this show…this had some great potential, if they would’ve continued the series.

I am extremely upset. I am South African and even way over here we can relate to the way we as black people grew up and all the good times we have in “the hood”. i really loved the show and the cw sucks!!!!

This is really a shame. This was one of the better comedies out there – along with My Name Is Earl. I guess that CW is targetting younger people, for they probably feel they can’t identify with all the 1980’s material, culture, fashion, music, etc.
