FlashForward: Future’s Not Looking So Good; Will It Be Cancelled or Get a Second Season?

Flash ForwardWhat looked to be one of the biggest hits of the new season, FlashForward, isn’t looking like such a hit any longer. Will the series make it to year two?

FlashForward begins as the world’s population blacks out for 137 seconds and they “flash forward” to see visions of their lives six months in the future. The series’ ensemble cast includes Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Jack Davenport, Zachary Knighton, Peyton List, Dominic Monaghan, Brian F. O’Byrne, Courtney B. Vance, Sonya Walger, and Christine Woods.

The series debuted on September 24th on ABC. The premiere attracted a 4.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 12.47 million viewers. The following week, the number dropped to a very respectable 3.7 and 10.73 million.

For week three, the ratings dropped again to a 3.0 and nine million. Total viewership rose for weeks four and five but the demo remained essentially the same with a 3.1 rating.

On October 29th, FlashForward dropped to a series low of a 2.7 rating and 8.92 million viewers. The sudden drop was understandable because it aired opposite the World Series on FOX. Unfortunately, baseball fans didn’t return last Thursday when there wasn’t a big game. FlashForward’s ratings sunk even further to a 2.6 and 8.47 million, barely beating FOX’s Bones for second place.

ABC has already committed to a full season of FlashForward so it’s relatively safe for now. However, if these numbers don’t start going up, the series is far from guaranteed a second season.

What do you think? Do you think the ratings will go back up or will the show burn out in one season? Are you still watching? If so, what could be done better?

I think the idea behind fast forward is solid. This is an excellent show. just when you think you know whats going to happen, they threw a monkey wrench in. it leaves the storyline a million places to go. i cant wait to see what happens! I love this show and hope that more people realize just how good it is.

I love this show, and I can’t understand why they would have low ratings. This is a very fascinating show with lots of plots and twist. It may just be the economy and people have a lot on their minds.

The whole same sex kissing thing, sorry, but I don’t think that’s the reason for low ratings. Give people some credit! It’s not like this show is full of sex scenes anyway.

I hope they don’t cancel the show :)

I’m tired of networks hooking me with these suspenseful sci-dramas and then canceling them before they find their feet. I bet people don’t watch these shows because they’ve been burned too many times. I know people who generally wait for them to make it past their first season before they start investing their personal time and effort into watching. I know some people who didn’t start watching LOST until they knew there would be an ending. American networks should learn from Asian shows. Our networks should concentrate on writing a quality show and commit to have it run for at least a season and a half. During that season to season and a half, the show should have a set beginning, middle, and end. At that point, they can cancel the show gracefully, without burning fans. Happier fans are more likely to watch the next effort. The way things are now, everything suffers if the network starts threatening to cancel shows before they even get started. Writers, directors, and talent start to quit or stop giving their best efforts to a sinking ship. Its stupid, frustrating, and destroys viewer loyalty.

This show has lived to its fullest potential in the first season. Its such a disappointment how the story line is none existent. With the exception of the first pilot episode, every episode after that is identical and extremely repetitive and boring. If ABC knows whats good for their bottom line they will cancell the show and go with something more interesting. This show is awful and has no imagination, creativity or anything for that matter.

It had a lot of potential…but the writers failed to deliver believable characters and events. In the hands of more qualified writers, this show couldve been a big hit. It’s a shame.

Why do they cancel shows that are worth watching? True, it wasn’t up to the same quality as House or Lost, but with Three Rivers (CBS) being cancelled and now Flash Forward, without any kind of ending, it makes you not even want to invest in ANY new series because it will be cancelled and you will be left wondering. Reality TV is fine in moderation but really, give it a chance before you cancel it, my family loved it.
Put it on NBC, they need something in the 10pm time slot now

We lost interest when the whole same sex thing was introduced. Sorry. I don’t care to watch that, it does not interest me and in fact, turns me off. We liked the show until that point. In fact, when it started, we felt duped. It’s fine, you can go ahead and put it in the show as the networks have the right to air what they want, I don’t care, but if you want me to watch, sorry.

This series started out so well, but then …

What ruined it for me was the bad writing (directing?) re: the main FBI character. He is so moody and his I.Q. keeps dipping below the horizon when he interacts with his wife. And as for her, how did she ever get through Med school? The characters don’t interact like most people, but are impetuous, petulant, myopic in their thinking … (whew)
Why do I still watch it? It’s a great concept! I keep hoping they will ‘fix’ the shows problems, but for now, I’ll watch it later on HULU. I have other things to do …

Love the show. However, it took off and then it seemed like it was only airing everyother week and then left gaps… which is what killed it… You were left with suspense and then it took too long before the next one aired. This show needed to stay on weekly to keep you interested since it was just getting started and it was an intense show. Hope it can pull through.

People may have not returned to it after the game on opposite channel because if you air the episode then they miss it then they may have a hard time followinf the plot line when they return to watch it especially with this format of a show.
The answer –do not air a show when a game is on–skip and move it to the following week.
This is a great show in a time when there is so much junk on tv.

The main reason this show dropped quickly, and ABC will never learn, was an episode that aired was uncalled for, had no relevant or bearing on the plot. You all know which show it was, and I tracked the rating drop to week after that show aired.
