FlashForward: Future’s Not Looking So Good; Will It Be Cancelled or Get a Second Season?

Flash ForwardWhat looked to be one of the biggest hits of the new season, FlashForward, isn’t looking like such a hit any longer. Will the series make it to year two?

FlashForward begins as the world’s population blacks out for 137 seconds and they “flash forward” to see visions of their lives six months in the future. The series’ ensemble cast includes Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Jack Davenport, Zachary Knighton, Peyton List, Dominic Monaghan, Brian F. O’Byrne, Courtney B. Vance, Sonya Walger, and Christine Woods.

The series debuted on September 24th on ABC. The premiere attracted a 4.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 12.47 million viewers. The following week, the number dropped to a very respectable 3.7 and 10.73 million.

For week three, the ratings dropped again to a 3.0 and nine million. Total viewership rose for weeks four and five but the demo remained essentially the same with a 3.1 rating.

On October 29th, FlashForward dropped to a series low of a 2.7 rating and 8.92 million viewers. The sudden drop was understandable because it aired opposite the World Series on FOX. Unfortunately, baseball fans didn’t return last Thursday when there wasn’t a big game. FlashForward’s ratings sank even further to a 2.6 and 8.47 million, barely beating FOX’s Bones for second place.

ABC has already committed to a full season of FlashForward so it’s relatively safe for now. However, if these numbers don’t start going up, the series is far from guaranteed a second season.

What do you think? Do you think the ratings will go back up or will the show burn out in one season? Are you still watching? If so, what could be done better?

I love this show but if I wasn’t a die hard DVR’er then I probably would miss alot of shows I enjoy and it is due to the way they have jacked up the seasons, mid-season finale what the heck is that just play a season and btw what ever happened to re-runs?

If FlashForward gets cancelled, its because the imbeciles who work for ABC thought it’d be a great idea to play a few episodes then let the show disappear for like 3 months.

That’s not a winning formula for ANY show. Especially new ones. Who really remembers GOOD shows when (as in the case of V) 4 shows are aired, or 10 shows are aired, but then the show disappears for months at a time?

I am a hige fan of FlashForward and faithfully watch this show everytime it is on. With some of the silliest shows on today, this show is a breath of fresh air. So this show needs to be saved! I love this show and hope it is not canceled!

Can’t see it surviving a second season. The show feels too much like Lost for my liking, i.e. throwing us snippets of info but never really explaining anything. Even the castoff actors from Lost are starting to turn up. In my opinion the biggest mistake was taking it off air for months, personally I think that was a fatal mistake, as viewers hadn’t invested enough time in the show at that point, making it a much easier decision not to watch the second half of the season.

Flash Forward lured me back to watching network TV. The show is top notch sci fi and has been getter better and better with each episode. The marketing and promo for the show sucked. The network was never able to package it in a way that would have let viewers know about the high quality, sophisticated, sci-fi content. I guessed that it would be a one season phenomenon from the beginning. It did not cater to the lowest common denominator and was so intelligent that it would blow away viewers comfortable with Dancing With the Stars and American Idol. Since the show has come back this March, the episodes have been brilliant and compelling. The writing is so kick ass and the characters are intriguing. If ABC cancels this show they are spitting on all of us who desire intelligent, creative, and challenging programming. That has been the pattern for years and years. We are the outliers. I’ll just retreat back to reading the latest Robert Sawyer novel and watching cable TV. Since the X-Files it’s all been down hill. Flash Forward has been exciting and delightful. Maybe one of the cable networks will pick it up and ABC can wallow in the swamp to mediocrity.

Hello,

My name is David Vox Mullen and I’m the Host of the weekly “FlashForward” based fan podcast FLASHFORCAST.

I’m just trying to spread the word of my personal mission and it’s catching on and I hope you could help. (If you are so inclined)

Basically as we can tell by the almost fictional type of negative media hype FLASHFORWARD has been receiving, there is the chance that ABC may not want to renew Flashforward for another season.

We at FlashForcast believe this is because the good people at ABC may not be aware of how much the fans actually appreciate the show.

It’s far too easy for the “haters” to Blog & “Flame” about what they don’t like about a TV show. But how many of the millions of actual viewers take the time to actually say what they do like about it? Mostly because they feel that their statements won’t be heard. (So why bother right?)

The long and the short of it is I’m leading a huge “SAVE FLASHFORWARD” Campaign.

I’m trying to “make some noise” Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

We’re currently turning some heads in the U.K. as you can see by the following articles.

I absolutely agree with Stacy. I’m a huge fan of the show! It’s far more promising than shows like Gossip Girl, The Middle, or Modern Family, all of which are cliche compounded with horrific acting. Another problem lies in that there’s very little promotion of Flashforward. In fact, I didn’t even know the new season started until Saturday night when I was browsing online. I really hope ABC doesn’t waste my time episode after episode if they are not going to keep it. Also so many people have DVR’s these days, and I’m not sure if that’s calculated into ratings. I know that because I have class, I’ll probably end up recording this show, and several others, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not a dedicated fan >_>
I did catch up with the season premiere though, and I thought it was one of the better episodes: full of wittiness, emotion, and suspense. I was quite impressed with the writing and directing, and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the season will unfold.

From what I understand DVR ratings are included but only for people who watch the recording within 7 days. I don’t have anything to support this but remember reading about it when I was looking at ratings for ‘Lost’.

My husband and I love this show. Why is it that the good shows are always cancel and replace my garbage? I hope the series is successful.

I’d like to say FlashForward is a great show.. When episode I saw episode 7 I was really moved by that guy jumping off the building to prove the future can be changed..

I hope it’s getting better ratings by now. Great concept for a show.

I agree with eveyone’s comments so far. I did not watch the show when it first came on. However, I am not (March 2010) getting into it even though I did not watch the first episodes, I watched the summary episode aired after the hiatus. I have to say that it is a great show. It should be given a chance and if the networks don’t stop showing episodes in the middle of the season then I am sure poeple will stick around and watch the entire season. If networks leave people hanging in the middle of the season then more than likely people will move on and lose interest. I hope it does not get cancelled… It is a great concept…

I personally love the show, was very happy to see that it came back on when they said it would. This is one show I really enjoy watching, would hate for it to be cancelled.

I agree with Stacy… I did not even know about the show until I stumbled onto it online… I watched the first 10 episodes and waited with baited breath for the season to start back up again so I could watch it… I even told some other friends of my discovery and they went out to find the DVDs of first season so they could catch up… couldn’t find them… but I guess it would be a waist of money now if show gets canceled… Just start the show.. play a FULL SEASON… and if you need to go into reruns, play in order so new comers and get caught up… not everyone is a baseball fan, or whatever… you could not only refresh current fans, but pick some new ones up… personally, I hate the yo-yo thing with split seasons… give it up… people get bored and find something else, and then they don’t come back!!!

One of the biggest problems with the networks is that with shows like this they aren’t doing full seasons. They give 4-8 shows then take it off the aire for months at a time then expect us to be there when it comes back on. I personally am sick of this, I want a full season and several during the year. The second Biggest problem is they have a show like this they do this stupid flip season crap then the ones of us that do come back and watch they just end up cancelling the show. You can almost bet that if it is a split season (gotten so used to this by now) that they are planning on cancelling. So why bother to come back and get interested?
