When Jill Marie Jones was not brought back to the show, it was doomed at that point! You can say what you want, but we all know that she brought that something extra to the show. I know Traci Ellis Ross was supposed to be the star, but they made her character look like a desparate woman and Jill’s character knew what she wanted. She was really funny. The producer tried to fill the void by making the “Monica” character part of the click, but it did not work for me and obviously others as well. So don’t blame Jill Marie Jones, she was not the producer.

At least we get to see the reruns!!!

I think it is a tragedy that we will not be able to see how it all ends. I became wrapped up in the lives of all the characters. They had depth and substance, something that is missing from most series on television. I have noticed how the now CW has replaced all of the intellegent “ethnic” shows with mindless sex and violence cast with white people. I find myself serching for something intellegent yet funny to watch these days. CW should take some of the money spent on One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl and allow a real show to have a proper ending.

Jill Marie Jones left the show because she wanted a raise. She asked the other girls (Tracee, Golden, and Persia) to not sign the contract so she would not be alone and together all will get an increase, but they failed her. She then had to leave. So they wrote her out of the show. Once the producers saw that Girlfriends was going downhill once Toni left, they should have called her to return. Pride is a powerful thing. And so unfortunately Girlfriends (my favorite show) has come to an end. This is utter foolishness. Now CW has foolish shows that caters to the younger more energetic supporters. This proves that television is no longer what it used to be.

It seems like when Jill marie Jones left, she took the writers with her. Not only did they lose who I think was the star of the show but writing just went down as well. Its also disappointing that the show wasnt even given a proper ending. Brock Akil disappointed. I wouldnt be keen on watching anything else she is responsible for. She showed a complete disregard for the fans by not giving the show a proper ending.

As a latino man, I have to say that this show was the closest thing on TV to showing not only latino but any other minority life coming up from and succeeding in life throught ups and downs. All other tv shows show latinos and african americans as being ghetto, inner city, undereducated people who will never better themselves. As it will have to be a long time before there is something that is targeted for latinos it is really a shame that this series was canceled. Sure it was a colored version of sex and the city like some might say but it was something we could associate with on TV.

Hello to all,…I’m a young African American business man,..who owns a strategic marketing/emarketing agency and it was truly a breathe of fresh air to see a sit-com like “Girlfriends” depicting African American women as successful, sexy, progressive, innovative & stylish! I realize the shows’ target audience was women,..or minority women, however men watched the show as well. This is how power the show was. It is a shame the show was cancelled. In my opinion, Girlfriends was the best tv show, targeting African American women & men. To date,…there are no African American tv sit-coms currently on tv. I realize that ALL of the comments submitted are from women,..but me being an African American male, who faithfully watched the show,…proves how dynamic the show, actors & theme really was!

I am beyond upset….it’s manifested into RAGE! I can give room for debate because the writing went down the toilet once it switched over to “the male perspective”…which was stupid since it’s about GIRLfriends. However, the writing was lacking for some time and there was plenty of time for someone to say HEY, this kinda sticks…lets get some fresh ideas in here or revert back to the old formula that works. There is no loyalty to the consumer anymore. They filled a niche’, and African American women responded. We tuned in week after week, and even sat through the re-runs to support this show that didn’t portray us as loud-mouth, neck-rolling, ghetto, baby-mammas….you get the point. I am so hurt because we became invested in the show, the storyline, and the longevity of the ONLY thing we had to show us for who we really are. DIVERSE, STYLISH, SASSY, SMART, COMPLEX, FRIENDS, ENEMIES, MOTHERS, WANNA-BE BRIDES….you know what I’m talking about ladies. I’m so sick of WHITE tv I could scream!!! Their lives don’t look anything like mine or any of my friends. It’s as if the equation for a successful program is to make all the characters white, elite, and unrealistically perfect. I need some financial aid needing, tx max shopping, low-middle class, down-to-earth, non-botoxed but will weave it up sistahs! Does anyone care about the consumer??? Can I be entertained without being embarassed at a sambo-ed version of what white people think Blacks should be? Ok, yall…I’d done complaining. I just miss my girls…I even tolerated the bad writing to show my support for the women to play the characters I love….oh yeah, and Mara…please keep doing your thing. We need more of you. Although I love watching the reruns on a daily basis, it upsets me that “economics” played a major role in not giving the show its proper finale. These types of things only seem to happen to African American shows. The writing becomes so poor toward the end of the series that they have to cancel them. What a shame. There were so many different directions and story lines the show could have taken if they hadn’t been so eager to give it the boot. After all these years Joan couldn’t get the wedding she deserved. How lame!!! That show was a refreshing look at the different faces of black women with a 1/2 hour dedicated solely to us. How can you not have enough money for Girlfriends yet create a spin off called The Game!!!!

I guess by now Girlfriends is axed. Am watching a rerun which has been shown in the Uk over 5 times on my last count. Over on this side of the pond we (ethnic minorities) have come to accept that no-one in TV ever listens to the viewers thoughts or even consider that we may want to watch more programs/sitcoms that show us in a normal/positive light. The newest programs we see are about negative/degrading ideas of Africa/Asia/Caribbea. As long as they get their cable subs and TV license then their happy.
So for us to watch movies of ethnic origin we have to buy DVD’s online, or watch repeats of series/sitcoms.

Did anyone ever consider that removing Jill Marie Jones (Tony Childs) from the show would be a bad idea? Or for that matter any of the actresses? None of the women can be replaced. It’s amazing to me how the producers and writers of Sex and the City understand this, but the same doesn’t apply for Girlfriends. The show should have been cancelled after Jones’ termination or resignation. Maybe some money could have been saved. Me and my girlfriends got together every Monday night to watch the wonderful women do their thing…..until Jones was removed. The show was the closet thing to the reality of professional Black women that has ever aired on tv. I am very sad that is is over. I do hope the producers and writers make wiser choices in the future.

I have followed the show from Zimbabwe to the Uk so you can imagine how behind i have been but now that i have seen quite abit of the eighth series and watching the re-runs i cant believe that they have cancelled the show i had so many ideas that i could imagine happening and Joan’s wedding,does she get married in the end?? so much id love to see and to know its over really does break my heart its like when it comes to a black sitcoms ‘things fall apart’ yet i feel there are alot of us who are dedicated viewers and we should not be denied what is our right,even my 13yr old brother got into it with Maya’s famous ‘Ah Hell No!!’ for women in general black,white and mixed it is an outrage that the show was cancelled.

I honestly think that the CW is not for us (blk ppl). They have all of these stupid white shows that don’t make any sense. I heard that P Miller (Master P) is launching his own TV channel. I think it would be a great move for him to bring back some of the shows that were taken off due to “low ratings”…..think about it….All of Us, One on One, Girlfriends, Half and Half, and even Eve’s old tv show. I know it might not happen but what if????? If he could pull that off it would be amazing!!!!

We need our shows also. We shouldnt be forced to watch all white shows with the token black person in it. I want to watch tv shows that relate to the black homes. Not some lilly white family on every station. I am not a racist but it does seem kinda funny that all of our shows are being cancelled because of “low rating”. I honestly think its a bunch of bs but what can we do. I don’t know exactly when P Miller’s tv station will be aired but I really do have high hopes for it. I for one will not be watching any of these silly white sitcoms.

It is sad that the network will not honor a last season and finale. I have followed the show since the very beginning and I’m sad it is over. Hopefully the network and writers can cometogether with some type of agreement and send the show off on a good note! There are too many loose ends, what is going to happen with Darnell and Mya, is Lynn going to get the attention she needs in order to have a successful albumn, I want to see Monica and William bring in their baby, and PLEASE let us see Joan FINALLY get married!!! I watched Girlfriends since airing of the very first episode and i fell attached to the story. I faithfully watched every episode of every season and when the last season aired it seemed like there may have been a dark cloud hovering over the girlfriends. You can tell that the writing changed but my loyalty to the show hadn’t changed. Even though it is disappointing that the show is canceled, it would have been nice to have an actual scripted ending for them. Joan finally keeps a man and marries him only for them to have him shipped off to iraq…now what? is he coming back safe and sound? is all well with the girlfriends? i guess we’ll never know. =/

This situation was typical. I figured this decision was in the making when the network changed the airing time of Girlfriends to Monday nights at eight. Coincidence that it’s set at the same time as Monday night football. I feel that decision was made to decrease ratings, which in turn would cover the reasons for cancellations. They should have left Girlfriends on Thursdays. Then in the end denied a respectible and conclusive series finale.

It’s a shame that a show that was successful for the network for 8 years does not get a proper send off. i have seen show after show do a season finale and some had been on the air less than 8 years. I know African-American shows have to struggle to gain a audience and UPN/WB and now the CW billed itself on being the network for African-Americans. Now it totally disregards those viewers by not giving one of our most beloved shows the proper send off that many other “main stream” shows receive. CW for once think about the your viewing audience. You did not give kevin hill a second season due to struggling viewship but for the “main stream” Veronica Mars you moved it around to capture an audience. Can a TV Network for once show some appreciation for the African American television viewer.

Why not boycott the CW advertisers and start a letter writing campaign to the network and the advertisers? It is typical that the CW has no value for African American viewers. Although the show was questionably the same quality as it was when Jill Marie Jones portrayed Toni, it was certainly as memorable and entertaining as the dullard show, “Friends”. So, why not a boycott of the CW advertisers with letters of protest to the network and advertisers?

I’m devasted that Girlfriends is not returning. I was wondering why there were only showing re-runs. Girlfriends was the one show that I would never miss. A show that showed positive, successful black people. As a black woman I identified with all the women on the show. It is a slap in the face that they are not even closing the show with a proper finale. 8 years and you don’t do a finale! I’m so tired of the networks cancelling shows that show positive black people. The only thing that the networks want to put on tv is trash. I just hope The Game will last a while.

I’M PISSED! I loved all of the characters! Joan’s character in particular encouraged my friends and I to become successful black women. The three of us are under 25 and are working on our Master’s Degrees. We envisioned working a 9 to 5 and then meeting at the bar for drinks on the weekend. There will probably never be another show that has beautiful black suceccessful African American women!

I didn’t want to believe that the show was cancelled. I just stopped watching this Monday when they ran the episode where Lynn is performing at the park. I am a young African American woman and this is the only show that gave me positive black women to look forward to seeing on TV. If they can give Sex In The City a movie, I know they can give our Girlfriends a movie if not some special on cable or DVD. It was not right how they brought us so close to Joan getting married, Lynn’s music career taking off, Mya and Darnell considering pregnancy again and the birth/parenthood of William and Monica’s new baby just to leave everyone of the end of there seats. If the network had any integreity they would do the right thing and give the show the well deserved finale.

I am more than a little upset that Girlfriends has been cancelled. What makes me more than a little upset is that some of the only quality black shows on tv are reruns of older shows. I don’t do reruns unless I have to and I don’t like having to. I think it is time for BET and TVone to step up and give us some quality shows that aren’t reruns. I’m sick of hoping that the other networks will do it. As history has shown us if they do it will only be short lived. Yes I think 8 years is short lived. Y&R and wrestling have been on for ages, hell before I was born I think. BET and TV One I’m calling you out. Give me something other than reruns, college hill, stupid ass hell date and constant repeated videos. 106 & Park can go if you ask me; you don’t get to see all of the videos on that show anyway.

Totally upset,
Well I am quiet disappointed by the cancellation of Girlfriends. I have waited ever so paciently to see a final, and nothing. It seems as if every show that I watched is cancelled for some reason or another. First things first they always cancel without some final episode. There isn’t enough black shows to begin with. Than this, how unfair. I wanted Joan to get married, have a baby, and her relationship with Tony to be restored. I wanted Lynn to find happiness and have her singing career take off. Also for Myia and Darnell to conceive or adopt and Jabaree go off to college. As for William and Monica, I see them to have their baby and the drama of being a parent. Then I wanted Tony to return for good or come back to repair her friendship with Joan and the girls. I also wanted her and Todd back together and for her to be happy even if she didn’t move back to LA. So if they don’t air a final episode make a DVD or something but I need to watch some type of ending!!!! Please!

Just like everyone else I was watching the reruns. I was checking on Sunday and Monday, eagerly waiting for the new shows to air. I just happened to read CANCELLED Girlfriends while I was looking for yet another show I enjoy. It is truly sad to turn on the television and not be able to find a show that I can identify with. As a black woman, strong, smart, funny,sad, angry,scared,in love, out of love. The rainbow of emotions I feel , good and bad relationships, family drama, friendship drama. My Girlfriends reflected that. I loved that show, those women ( and William ) became family. I felt their pain, their joy, and now they are gone. It isn’t fair! With all the shows that are aired and created where are “our” showes, “our” faces “our” voices? It just isn’t right and I fear this is how it will always be.

I just thought about something. BET should step up to the plate. They already run the old Girlfriends episodes so they should be more than willing to air new shows. And maybe then BET will actually air something that doesn’t stereotype and pigeonhold us. If they can continue to support videos with half naked women and stereotypical rappers I know that they can air Girlfriends or at least the finale.

I agree with the other comments. Like them I have been a dedicated fan to this show. It was the only show I looked forward to watching each week. I really enjoyed Joan’s character and could identify with her, so I always invisioned a finale with her getting married. All I want is a finale. Out all the money the creator and producers have made I cannot see how they cannot afford a show. It is really a slap in the face. You watch eight seasons, watch the characters go through ups and downs for nothing in the end. If they needed money they could have took donations or something.

I am saddened yet again by this display of unfair treatment toward minority shows. It was sad enough that Half and Half got cancelled and replaced with a less than mediocre show like Aliens in America (which should have never even aired), but now Girlfriend’s is in the bag as well. Don’t you think that the faithful viewers of this show deserve to see a REAL SERIES FINALE? What is wrong with this picture? For the last 6 years or so, Girlfriends has been the top rated sitcom on Fox as well as the CW; and now to end it that way it simply unfair. I don’t mind that the how got cancelled; it’s just the way in which they chose to do it. For the past eight years, I have been a faithful viewer of this show. I have watched as each character matured and grew up. Finally when all the drinks had been set on the table, they decided to rip the cloth from the table. This is not, IS NOT fair to the viewers of this sitcom. Are you trying to tell us thanks for watching for the past eight years but we don’t have enough money to film a proper finale oh well thanks for watching for nothing now what? I don?t want to have to think about the what if’s, should have’s, would have’s, nor do I want to think Joan got married; nor I think Aaron died in the war, I think Tony came back, I think Monica had a girl, I think Lynn finally signed her contract, I think Mya and Darnell adopted or I think Mya and Darnell got pregnant again. This is just not right (television injustice). What do the viewers get in turn for watching this show for the past eight seasons? nothing but crapp (fecal matter, junk) from the network. I want (NEED) this show, THIS SHOW to have its proper finale. Shouldn’t the viewers get at least that? That is not a lot coming from the many viewers who have tuned in to watch this show DESERVES. what pisses me off is that if a white show is on the air for 8yrs and the ratings drop they still give a proper send off out of respect for the viewers that invested 8yrs in watching the damn show.. It’s because the Actors were black and the consumers were black so in white Hollywood it’s insignificant.. Happy Days jumped the shark 2 years before they cancelled it . Racist ass country … so far the only show that they ended properly is The Parkers .. the Hughley, One on One and All of Us were all cancelled with the same lack of respect … I say we boycot UPN until the decide that they’re black viewer count too…

Well, another one bites the dust. It was bad enough with The Jeffersons,and they heard about theire cancellation from friends. Then Bernie Mac and My Wife and Kids, now they’ve done it to Girlfreinds. You would think that an allowance would be made for one more show to wrap things up a bit. I was left hanging with all of my favortie sitcoms just being sliced out of existence. Maybe someone, somewhere would produce a TV movie that would at least give closure to the last three. Was Bernie’s wife pregnant, did ‘Nessa go to college? Will Joan ever get her man back? I was still hoping Ms. Childs would make a guest appearance and help close that wound. These are the few shows that I bother to look at and this is one of the reasons why. Remember, Jim Belushi’s gosh awful show remained, and My Wife and Kids, clearly a much better show, was snuffed out. I agree, a word of warning would have lessend the impact and shows that don’t deserve the air time are treated with more respect. I’ll be watching a lot more old movies, it’s safer than becoming a fan and being treated so badly.

I AM COMPLETELY DISSAPOINTED THAT I WILL NO LONGER GET TO WATCH THIS MONDAY NIGHTS..SINCE DAY 1 I HAVE BEEN ENTERTAINED AND BECOME PART OF THIS FANTASTIC SITCOM WITH THOSE INSPIRING BEAUTIFUL INTELLIGIANT AND SUCCESSFUL WOMEN. TELEVISION NEEDS MORE SHOWS WITH INSPIRING STRONG MINORITY WOMEN WHO WE CAN LOOK UP TO AND TO TAKE IT OFF THE AIR IS SIMPLY ABSURD. THROUGHOUT EACH SEASON WE HAVE ALL WATCHED JOAN TRY RO FULLFILL HER DREAM OF MARRIAGE AND ITS DISSAPOINTING THAT DEVOTED VIEWERS WILL NOT GET THAT CHANCE. THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS THE SHOW HAS BUILT UP FOR EACH CHARACTER AND SADLY WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WATCH THOSE ENDINGS AND SCENARIOS TAKE PLACE. BRING GIRLFRIENDS BACK!

i am very upset with this decision. I among a whole lot of people faithfully watched this show. Every Monday night this is what we looked forward to. For them to say that this is due to ratings… I think is so wrong. I have been reading lots of blogs, and information about this and lots of people are highly upset. Please give us the pleasure to at least see Joan get her dream wedding (which she has been planning since the day she was born) and Toni come back for the wedding, and William and MOnica have the baby, and Maya and Darnell have a sucessfull business that is what they were all working for, and they deserve to have it… We have learned to love these characters and would love to see that.
