Harry’s Law: Stars and NBC Chair on Cancellation

No season two for Harry's Law, canceledThough Harry’s Law was the most-watched scripted TV show on NBC this season, the network cancelled it. As I’ve suggested in the past, advertisers favor shows that attract those in the 18-49 demographic. Though Harry’s Law had a lot of viewers, the legal series had some of the lowest demographic numbers on the network.

When asked why Kathy Bates and company had been let go, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said, “It was a difficult decision. Everyone here respects Harry’s Law a lot but we were finding it hard to grow the audience for it. Its audience skewed very old. It’s hard to monetize that.”

Bates broke the news of the show’s cancellation over the weekend. She wrote to fans, “Sad news today. Harry’s Law will not be renewed for a 3rd season. We are all terribly sad. Many thanks for all your support.”

Would you watch Harry's Law on cable?

The actress later noted, “Waiting for this verdict was tough. We wrapped a month ago so it was a very long wait!”

Bates reconciled, “Tough day getting used to the idea of no more Harry. Think I’ll keep her with me 4ever.”

When asked if there was a possibility that Harry’s Law might move to cable, Bates responded, “No hope.” But, responding to an inquiry last night on the subject, Bates wrote, “Not sure, but don’t think so.”

Justine Lupe, who played Phoebe Blake, wrote, “Sad day. Little bit of heartbreak. What a gift to had had this time.”

Actress Karen Olivo, who joined the cast in season two as Cassie Reynolds, responded with a message to her castmates, “It was an honor, my friends!”

Nathan Corddry, who’d been playing Adam Branch since the show began, noted, “I’d thank everyone individually, but the list is too long.Never was happier professionally. Thank you for a wondrful 2 years. #tough2swallow”

What do you think? Are you going to miss Harry’s Law as much as the cast will? If the show did move to another channel, would you follow it?

NBC is making a BIG mistake. This is a good show with great story lines. Move to cable Harry – and keep entertaining this demographic.

I guess that the “older” demographics, “you know the ones” like me who are over 50, have jobs, work hard, and when we sit down to watch television, we want to watch people that we can relate to. Shows such as Harry’s Law, CSI Miami and Unforgettable are shows that hold our interest and actually show people interacting with others and sometimes managing to inject some levity into the 50 minutes that they are on. Some of us do not want to watch people eating bugs in a jungle, preforming ridiculous task as they race from place to place, or watch endless talent competition shows. The formerly Big 3 networks(CBS, ABC, NBC) might want to rethink cancelling shows that appeal to those of us that they want to discount, the demographic age that they chase after are not the ones who have been loyal viewers as we’ve grown older. It is not “us old dispensable” folks who have defected to the many cable stations. I hope that a cable network picks up these cancelled shows. If they do, then this is one viewer who will be watching those stations.

Whats wrong with only old people watching ? Old people make up a huge part of TV viewers. I love Harry……it was a GREAT show !!! I love Kathy and will miss her, not to mention the things I learned from that show. It was well written, emotional, funny. Why is it that only stupid based shows stick around and something with some meat in it gets cancelled ? ? ?

Could someone explain why is it that ashow that stimulates you intellectually a.lways seems to get cancelled after a shorrt run. Sometimes people do not want to watch 20 -28 year olds act stupid. I will miss Harry’s Law and all who were on it. I would love to see another network pick up the show

What a disappointment. Just because most of the viewers are over 50 they cancel a show that has pretty decent ratings. I really enjoyed the show. The cast was terrific as was the writing. What a waste. I hardly ever watch NBC as it is. The only person I watch is Brian Williams and the News.

Really NBC maybe you need to hire some older media sales personnel. My gosh are you telling me polident, depends, campbells, folgers, safer baths, hearing aid and gosh I could keep going on and on. Go ahead NBC abandon the older generation, you are what is wrong with this country. Once it’s old just forget about it. You should be ashamed! If you can’t get advertisers to pay for a show that has over 10 million viewers there is something seriously wrong with your network. Do you really think young people are watching celebrity apprentice? Old Donald Trump, only washed up used to be stars? I mean come on, Harry’s Law fans might be older but we aren’t stupid. You are pathetic!
