Hell on Wheels: Season Two for AMC Series

Hell on Wheels season twoAMC has renewed their freshman drama Hell on Wheels for a second season. The series, which revolves around the creation of the United States’ first transcontinental railroad, brought the cable channel’s second-highest series premiere (behind The Walking Dead) on November 6th. The debut drew an impressive 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.36 million total viewers.

The ratings declined a bit but remained quite impressive for several weeks. Once Walking Dead finished for the year however, the ratings took a big tumble. The most recent episode drew a 0.6 rating in the demo and 2.27 million.

Here’s the press release about the renewal:

“Hell on Wheels” tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a Confederate soldier (Anson Mount) who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to ‘Hell on Wheels,’ a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. It examines the railroad’s institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during reconstruction. Over time, “Hell on Wheels” chronicles this potent turning point in our nation’s history, and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

“Hell on Wheels” stars Anson Mount (City by the Sea, Cook County) as Cullen Bohannon, a former soldier hell bent on avenging his wife’s death; Colm Meaney (Get Him to the Greek) as Thomas “Doc” Durant, a greedy entrepreneur taking full advantage of the changing times; musician/actor Common (Just Wright, Date Night) as Elam Ferguson, an emancipated slave working to achieve true freedom in a world entrenched in prejudice; Dominique McElligott (“The Philanthropist”) as Lily Bell, a newly widowed woman trying to survive in a man’s world; Tom Noonan (“Heat”) as Reverend Cole; Ben Esler (“The Pacific”) as Sean McGinnes and Philip Burke (“Law & Order,” “Mercy”) as Mickey McGinnes, two young brothers looking to find their fortune in the new West; and Eddie Spears (“Into the West”) as Joseph Black Moon, a Native American man torn between his culture and the changing world around him.

Shot on location in Alberta, Canada, the series is produced with assistance of the Government of Alberta, Alberta Film Development Program.

AMC’s Joel Stillerman, SVP of original programming, production and digital content, Susie Fitzgerald, AMC’s SVP of scripted programming and Jason Fisher, SVP of production oversee development and production for “Hell on Wheels.”

Have loved these last two years with HOW since inception. Could not wait for season 2…it was all good until you wrote in Lily’s demise. WERE YOU GUYS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY???? What ever possessed you to do that after such great writing, scenery, cinematography, surreal photography, GREAT CHARACTERS besides CULLEN. BUT, LILI’S character as portrayed by Dominique McElligott, that was a real FIND! Her strength , intelligence, beauty and perseverance in survival was out of the box. Where did you find such an actress! Undoubtedly, you gentlemen were intimidated by what you wrote. Don’t do this! She was the hook that Cullen needed with what he went through during the Civil War. Get back on track with her return. I have read all the scenarios as suggested by viewers. You can’t loose her! My faith for the show is with the writers in coming out of the box with her return.PLEASE!!!! Love the romance between CULLEN and LILY! PINNING FOR HELL ON WHEELS!! MORE EPISODES ARE NEEDED!! NOT JUST TEN!!

I just finished watching Season finale of Hell On Wheels — WHY DID THEY HAVE TO KILL LILLY. Now, I am not certain if I will watch again b/c she is gone — looking forward to her moving on with Cullen….very sad that the writers wrote her out — perhaps it can be like Dallas with Bobby & Pam — (LOL) a dream I mean….

I agree on losing Lily from the show. Was looking forward to her connecting more with Cullen and developing that relationship… ….Perhaps she wanted out of the series? Does anyone know if there will be a season 3? If yes, when that will be? Seems TV seasons really don’t exsist like they used to. Fewer episodes, weird seasonal schedule…..Great show! Hope it comes back!

This is one of the best programs I have ever watched. My husband and I can hardly wait for season 2. The actors(everyone of them) are so believable, we hardly know we are watching a movie. The directing is top notch. We have told all our friends and now they are hooked also. Thank you AMC. Keep up these wonderful kinds of programs.
