Law & Order: Criminal Intent: Jeff Goldblum Out; Going to Be Cancelled?

Jeff Goldblum on Law & Order: Criminal IntentIt’s not a great time for fans of all-things Law & Order. Though a new series, Law & Order: Los Angeles, is coming in the fall, the original Law & Order was cancelled after 20 years on the air. Now, things don’t look good for Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

The spin-off series follows investigations of high-profile cases. The show moved from NBC to USA Networks in 2007. Up until last year, it starred Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe. The show currently stars Jeff Goldblum, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Saffron Burrows.

The future of Criminal Intent has been up in the air for awhile as the cable channel tried to decide how they wanted to proceed (if at all). According to Deadline, a number of scenarios were bandied about, including a full-season pickup, a two year renewal, and a partial season pickup. They’ve apparently settled on an eight episode “mini-season” for the show’s (likely) final season. Some of the original cast, like D’Onofrio, may be asked back.

Should Criminal Intent continue?

Meanwhile, Goldblum has decided to exit the series. His contract has expired and, according to his representative, has decided to walk away rather than renegotiate because of the uncertainty of the show’s future.

Actually, all of the actors’ contracts have reportedly expired. They ran out at the end of June and were then extended until the end of July. When/if Criminal Intent returns for a 10th season, that could mean that Goldblum won’t be the only castmember missing.

USA is likely to make a final decision on Criminal Intent’s fate within the next week.

What do you think? Should Criminal Intent be renewed for a 10th season or should it be cancelled? Would you be satisfied with the ninth season finale, “Three in One,” being the series finale?

This is a huge no brainer and you have to tip your hat to D’Onofrio for leaving IF they didn’t extend Erbe’s contract. He knew they were the show. Goren the whack-job and Emes firmly entrenched with reality in her sad life after losing her husband. She knows the office politics and always knew when to lasso Goren. Her ability to keep him motivated positive and negatively was simply brillaint.

The writers had an obvious story line and that was making Emes the Captain. Let her work her reality based personna to Goldblum and Saffron with later on bringing Vincent back as a contractor. You could spin stories for years on end with these characters. I do have to say Saffron Burrows character didn’t fit the actress’ role. She could be replaced and nobody would squint. Goldblum’s character as the eclectic Detective wasn’t a bad idea but Jeff struggled to pull it off. Especially the musician Detective – didn’t need it. Build the character – don’t fluff it.

Oh no! Jeff Goldblum’s Zach Nichols character was the absolute best! Well-written, interesting, complex — and played very well by this incredible actor. I will be very sorry to see his tenure on CI to be short-lived.

The cast they have now is fine just the way they are. Goren was fired and Eames didn’t want to go on if Goren wasn’t going to be there no more. The show still has massive potential, even if the original cast can’t come back. Goldblum was the better addition to the show and makes it more interesting to watch.

Oh dear people. Honestly, the show got better for the past 2 seasons. There’s no need to bring back Goren and Eames into the show again. Goren had no choice but to get fired and Eames quit because she didn’t want to work with anyone else. Goldblum definitely improved the show.

Bring back the originals or take it off! The show is not the same and without the original cast it is not worth watching to me, what made the producers change the cast? I love the show only if Goren & Aimes are on it, thanks.

BRING D’ONOFRIO & ERBE BACK. IF THE SHOW HADN’T BEEN CHOPPED UP BY THE NETWORK PERHAPS IT WOULD BE GOING MUCH STRONGER TODAY. AND COURTNEY VANCE, HE WAS AN EXCELLENT FRIENDLY ANTAGONIST FOR THE TWO DETECTIVES, HE BROUGHT ORDER TO THEIR CHARACTERS.
THIS IS ONE COP ADULT SHOW I KNOW IS WATCHED BY COLLEGE STUDENTS IN THE PHILA. AREA, I’VE SEEN IT, AND HEARD IT, THE DEBATE ABOUT WHO DONE IT RAGES ON.

I BELIEVE GOREN AND EAMES SHOULD RETURN . THE CHEMISTRY WITH THEM WAS GREAT. I NEVER MISS A EPISODE AND STILL WATCH THE RERUNS. GOREN ALWAYS NEW HOW TO CRACK A CASE AND KEEP YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT. EAMES IS THE NO NONSENSE DETECTIVE WHO LET YOU FEEL THE PRESSURE. THERE IS NO CRIMINAL INTENT WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL CAST MEMBERS ..

Is it at all surprising to read something like this? Come on. The minute Erbe and D’Onofrio left the show, well…..let’s just say I read the comments on this post. And, from my own experience, I have not watched the show since they left. Furthermore, I only watch episodes with Erbe and D’Onofrio in them. Just bring them back. And yes, I agree to bring back Sheridan as well. However, I liked Ross’ character. But he won’t be back because he was killed off. Or was he (?) Witness protection I guess. Anyway, I digress, bring back the old crew!!!

I always respected Jeff Goldblum as an actor, but he just didn’t fit with the story line of Law and Order. Seeing him carry a badge and a gun just didn’t fit his on stage persona of carrying a laptop and a Logarithms calculator to save the world from spaceships and/or dinosaures. It may be type casting, but I’m glad, for his sake, that he is moving on.

Criminal Intent was smartly written and well acted .
It is now mundane with actors who only know how to roll their eyes, give”meaningful” looks and state the obvious. Take it off life support or bring the old crew back.

Dropping Numbers does not make sense to me at all. I watched it every week and looked forward to it. Had it lost viewership? The character the writers did ruin was Larry. The first years of the program he was very funny and added to the appeal. The last couple years he was doing crazy things. That doesn’t mean the show was no good. I’m sorry it is gone.

Bring Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe back and continue the show! Goldblum and Burrows are ok but the show will never be as good as it was with Goren & Eames. They have the chemistry and the talent. Bring back Jamey Sheridan too . . . Bogosian doen’t fit with Goren & Eames. Goren needs to start dating and Eames should get remarried, maybe to another cop. There are hundreds of shows that could be written to include their dating experiences as detectives. Jamey Sheridan could come back and battle the infamous Frank Adair to keep his job. Lose the Nicole Wallace character; that storyline is old and worn out now.

Wallace was killed at the end of season 7.
