TV show description: Sam Tyler (Jason O’Mara) is a modern-day detective for the NYPD’s 125th precinct. He lives with his girlfriend, Detective Maya Daniels (Lisa Bonet), who is kidnapped by a serial killer they’ve been investigating. Soonafter, while chasing a criminal, Tyler is hit and knocked unconscious by a speeding car. When he wakes up, Tyler finds that he’s been transported back to 1973.
Confused, Tyler makes his way back to his precinct building where he finds that the surrounding and attitudes are very different. Strangely, everyone at the precinct has been expecting him, thinking that he’s a transfer from Hyde Park.
Sam immediately clashes with his new boss, the irascible Lieutenant Gene Hunt (Harvey Keitel), a man who would rather use his fists than his brains to solve a crime. Eventually, the two begrudgingly become a powerful team — whether they like it or not.

The other squad members are a unique group. Detective Ray Carling (Michael Imperioli) is a sexist tough-guy, Hunt’s former right-hand man, and a handy guy to have in your corner. Police Women’s Bureau member Annie Norris (Gretchen Mol) is often the smartest person in the room but she’s relegated to menial tasks because of her sex. Tyler often defends her and the two develop a relationship. Rookie Detective Chris Skelton (Jonathan Murphy) is a sweet guy trying to make it in this uncompromising world. He likes Tyler’s modern thinking and begins to emulate it.
When he first arrives at the precinct, confused Tyler demands to know why his computer, desk and chair are missing. The detectives wonder if Tyler has a unique way of establishing authority, is a science fiction fanatic, or both. Once things quiet down, the police delve into a case that strongly resembles the one that Tyler was investigating before his apparent time travel.
Tyler continually tries to figure out what’s happened to him and receives various subliminal messages through televisions, phones, and various hallucinations. Can he find a way to return home, in time to help his girlfriend in peril? Is he in a coma, insane, or a true time traveler?
The series is based on a UK show of the same name that ran for two seasons.
The show has been cancelled.

I am officially finished with local stations they all suck. They take everything good off, from Journey Man to Eli Stone, Bionic Women and now Life on Mars! Screw you people, I hope you all go bankrupt, it makes no sense to take all the good shows off. I hope your ratings plumit!
I love this show. I am so upset that it is being cancelled. I’ve watched every show and thoroughly enjoyed each one. I wait impatiently to see the next one!!!!
Please don’t do this!!!!!!
This is the first show in years that I will actually change plans to be sure I can watch it.
Why hasn’t this caught on? The cast and storyline were great. I am going to miss this show and the characters dearly.
My husband and I really enjoy Life on Mars. One of the shows we both enjoy watching together. Great casting. At first we thought, what happens when he finally goes back home. But remember how great The Fugitive was, and how long it stayed on the air. Please reconsider!!!
This is the second attempt to pursuade the powers to be to keep “Life on Mars” on the air. What a good show and as usual another good show goes by the wayside, only to be replaced by something not near as good in quality of acting or story line. Please keep it on.
Help!!!! ABC what are you all thinking Its a awesome show we need more shows of entertaining like this Jason Omeara is rights 2008 Sam an the rest of the cast fits the charachters of the 70s Im 49 my son 22 loves it as much as I do Please save
Ok I am sick of the petition on Life on Mars. I love Life on Mars the same as the next person but the petition is not going to do anything. It is we viewers that must take action. Write to ABC, do a little advertising of your own, talk to the producer of the show and ABC. TAKE ACTION VIEWERS AND IF THEY CANCEL LIFE ON MARS WE SHALL BOYCOTT ABC!!
This is a superior/gripping show, Put it on a better time slot. It has great episodes and the music blend from the 70’s that is placed is perfect. Please reconsider this. It would be a shame for this to end.
I am addicted to Life on Mars! Please don’t cancel it. It has a fantastic plot line, outstanding acting and awesome music. It is the best show on ABC. I also think with this economy, watching a show like L.O.M. reminds people of a simpler time, and a time where the economy was also depressed and we survived! Please reconsider ABC!
DONT GO…ABC SHAME ON U LIFE ON MARS GONE, NA DONT DO IT KEITEL AND CREW THE 70s YOU GUYS ARE……..L O S T.
i love this show so much plz dont take it down r ill kill u o lie !!!!
ill cry for days!!!!!!!!!!!
DONT DROP THIS SHOW LIFE ON MARS IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is it, shows that revolve around adolescent humor stay on the air for years and a show like Life on Mars which is well written and acted are bounced after one season? This seems to happen over and over. Seems like we are doomed to T and A joke ridden entertainment.
We totally adore Life on Mars. It is intriguing and always full of surprises. A great cast! Please let it continue.
Oh please, not another show I started to really enjoy and end up being cancelled. Just like Moonlighting on CBS, I watched every episode of Life on Mars and liked the premise. It also took me back to a non-existent advanced technological age where we didn’t rely on cell-phones, vcrs, dvd systems, microwave ovens, etc. We had to rely on our wits and paper correspondence to get our viewpoints or conversations established. Please, I beg of you, don’t cancel a show that’s just catching on to the public now than the first season was capable of doing!
