Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I usually don’t get overly emotional when one of my shows comes to an end. Yes they are sad because it is over but…. Medium was not one of my favorite shows so I didn’t think that I would care when it was over. The majority of the episode was ok but I can’t remember the last time that I cried so hard over a tv show! I was hysterical to find out that Joe was really dead and when Allison was old and died and the two were reunited I just lost it. Yes there was another episode where… Read more »
JAcy you are so right!!! yes, this contradiction is obvious!!! Maybe the last episode of Medium is just another dream of Allison and the serie will have more and more seasons!!! (I really hope that!!!)
Monica (from Chile)
Am i the only one who noticed the finale contradicted an earlier episode (i think just this past season) in which the future is shown and ariel is grown and married and alison has become district attorney and joe is alive and well?!!!!
Medium was one of the very few shows that are worth watching, and was my favorite show. I am so disappointed that it was cancelled. I also agree with another comment about the day/time of shows being changed so often with no warning. I was not impressed with the ending – it was depressing and not at all in line with the tone of the series. If the show has to be cancelled just say so and end it. No need to kill off the characters.
I loved the show “Medium” and wish it could have gone on forever. But if it had to end, it did so in a lovely conclusive (reminder of “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir”) way.
I just wanted to make a belated commit to the televison networks in general. One knows all shows end eventually but the new method of ending shows does not provide closure for those that have truly appreciated the writers abilities to create characters that you enjoy viewing weekly. What I believe truly gets to the avid watcher of a series is the networks jerking people around by constantly changing the days and times the series air. Leave it and work other shows around it …not the opposite. There is too much change today and we need stability and sometime your… Read more »
The cancellation of Medium sucked … that pretty much covers it …
I loved the series, but hated the finale. I agree with Lynn, I don’t think I can watch the reruns again since we know the tragedy that is coming to this family. Killing Joe was a low blow that was dramatic, but was totally disingenuous to the viewers. The core of this show was not the supernatural; it was the bond between Joe and Allison and how they worked to keep their family together. It (minus the supernatural) represents the struggle we all face everyday. Joe was the glue that held this family together both physically and emotionally. A happy… Read more »
Totally agree with Lynn & Beth – We deserved better !!! Heartbreaking Finale …..
We have watched the show from the beginning and loved it. I hated the ending. It overshadows all the other episodes now. I will not be able to watch any of it again…Wow. I would have liked to watch reruns someday…not now.
I am so sad to see my favorite TV show ever go off the air. I loved that family and keep reminding myself it’s only a TV show! While I loved the last episode, since they killed everyone off there is really no hope it will ever come back. Thank God for Modern Family. It’s now the only show I watch.
Ít was a great show, i didn´t knew that it was the last episode until the end, and i cried and i still cry when i think about it, it was a beautifull googbye. So diferent.
I was flabbergasted, and so disappointed….not just that the series ended but the way they ended it. I have loved the marriage between Joe and Allison and now it’s over.
Sad….
Do really miss them and they just like some good old friend or even family members as I watched Ariel,Bridgete and Marie from baby to grown up. I miss their bedtime talk and I love the love and union they shown as a family. Really really miss them!
I Loved the show and the actors. The ending was appropriate but I hated to see the show end. The programs they seem to be coming up with now are being made with cookie cutters.
A total disappointment. I can’t believe they took it off the air. They have played with this show for several years. Changing times, not on the air, putting other things on. I loved this show and phooey is all I can say. So, I don’t watch much TV anymore.
