Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I could not have asked for a better ending. Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy did it first but this was equally moving.
I think they should bring the show back. That there was more stories to share but not with out the same casting.
I watch “Medium” and the last episode always gets to me. I usually will watch the next to last episode but not the last one but last night I did and I cried like I always do. I love the ending even though it is sad and happy. I hated to see the show end but I think it was a perfect ending to a perfect show.
I loved Medium as it had a good feel factor. Last episode was so disappointing, written badly and in a rush!
VERY disappointing ending to a great series. Wasting half of the episode on a dream sequence was a complete waste when they could’ve spent that time letting us say goodbye to the cast.
I think the final episodes of most canceled tv shows carry an element of resentment towards those responsible and basically end up with these emotions being used to sabotage the series to some degree.. cuz final episodes usually just serve to leave tons of unanswered or incomplete scenarios dangling in the viewers head.. ive learned to avoid most final seasons alltogether if I wish to continue appreciation for the work.
Hi. I caught on to Medium just this year as it has been shown in the afternoons in the UK. I loved it. Just saw the final episode yesterday and i loved it, but cried too. It was so sad that he died. I kept thinking she would wake up and its all a dream….but when she wakened and he was standing in the doorway, i knew he was a ghost. Beautiful ending that they got back together as ghosts. Like Heathcliffe and Cathy. I think This Is Us should do this at the end with Rebecca and Jack.
I agree with you I really enjoyed the show , I like the way the cast performed together. Talking heads can really mess up a good show!
Medium tv show ending so stupid that her mother in law and father in law would not have warned of Joe’s death and the plane crash and with 3 or 4 psychic females in the house no one dreamt about it. Also Joe never came and said goodbye to Allison and daughters is not realistic and Marie is right to be angry about it. Why did they even have to kill Joe at all? And Bridget couldn’t be an writter and have a family? No pictures of her with husband and kids, just books on a shelf indicating she is… Read more »
I agree, many other sites agree that the last episode was poorly thought out and did not flow with the series. Its really too bad when they take such a great show and then have to leave that bad taste in your mouth at the end. Maybe this was a cheaper way to produce the last show instead of doing a full future of the children’s lives and the DA’s office lives. The other thing that gets me about this show is that they could not leave Joe’s bad luck with a job along. Seems like they were too nice… Read more »
I agree ending could all be a dream and bring the show back on or write for prime. But with the same casting. Since they were to make 16 not 7
I had not thought of it in this context. Valid point.
I love that he waited for her. my kind of show. but te beginning of the finale is not enjoyable. I am watching. we are up to the surgery. 1st part.
Thanks to Amazon Prime, I got to purge on 7 years of Medium. It was a great distraction as I finalize paperwork which I have been fearing to face for 2 years. I just watched the final episode and bawled. You see, I lost my husband 2 years ago in a horrible accident. I always loved the story line of Medium the love Joe and Allison characters have for each other. I was pissed when NBC canceled the show and never followed it afterward. Thanks to CBS for picking it up and giving it an ending, I just wish it… Read more »
I’m sooooo disappointed it’s finished, didn’t even see the last episode coming (just watched the last episode, I know it’s 2018 but I live in the UK). I loved this programme along with Frasier, wondering if the writers may bring it back after 7 years, wondering what I’m going to watch now instead……….
Why did her ghost at the end come back young and dressed differently all other ghost came back looking like they did when they died.
Because part ofvher died the day joe died ? just a thought
absolutely agree
that would have made no sense becos Allison died an old lady and joe was still young they had to make her young again so they could be together as a young beautiful couple not a young ish man being with an old lady …I love the show from beginning to the very end and applaud how the writers finished I cried too but it was a wonderful ending to an awesome show
Why not a handsome middle aged man with an old lady? They’re supposed to be spiritually perfect immortal dead beings, beyond the shallow confines of appearances!
Exactly!!
Exactly. She should have been 90 and in a hospital gown for eternity. It shouldn’t have mattered to the sexy young Joe – what’s a body when you’re dead?
Hated it, would have went another way.
I watched this show from the beginning but missed the last few episodes due to raising my own kids, lol. I started binge watching again from the beginning on Netflix and my husband and I both about cried, it broke our hearts that joe died. I guess that’s just the way it goes on TV shows, lol. I wish they would bring this show back on TV, it was so good and of course I want Joe alive when they bring it back. We miss the The Medium, bring it back, one of the best TV shows ever !
Since the writer strike they don’t do thing the same way. Since internet ppl have a voice. If the fans of this show get together and want it back maybe cast will come back and bring it back. We can only put our part in and see.
No I wanted to kill myself I hated it I cried and I cried I kept thinking she was gonna wake up. That was horrible!
Agree!!
Personally I didn’t understand why Joe was killed off. That made no sense to me and quite disappointing and sad. I enjoyed Medium because of Joe’s and Allison’s relationship. It was a great show.
Didn’t anyone notice that Alison called Joe. Jake or Jay in the last episode
