Last May, CBS announced a bold move, to take their hit The Big Bang Theory off of the Monday night schedule and shift it to Thursdays, to take on NBC’s traditional night of comedy. In its place, the programmers put another show co-created by Chuck Lorre, the creator of Two and a Half Men. On paper, it sounds like a brilliant move. Now that the Mike & Molly’s premiered, how do things look?
Mike & Molly follows Officer Mike Biggs (Billy Gardell) and Molly Flynn (Melissa McCarthy), a fourth grade teacher. They meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting and soon fall for one another. Others in the cast are Reno Wilson, Nyambi Nyambi, Katy Mixon, and Swoosie Kurtz.
The new sitcom debuted to a 3.9 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 12.2 million total viewers. That was enough to tie with NBC’s The Event for second place in the demo and have the second most number of viewers.

Historically, the CBS sitcoms who get the post-Two and a Half Men timeslot have done very well. CBS has high expectations however and has ended up cancelling several sitcoms that performed okay on this night. While the sitcom has good initial numbers, it’s not a positive sign that Mike & Molly lost 20% of the lead-in’s demo audience. Last year, Big Bang Theory was building on the lead-in and frequently outperformed Men in the demo.
There was a loss of about 7% of the audience midway through the Mike & Molly first episode so its seems likely those people won’t be back next week. It remains to be seen how many people will. This is a show whose fate will likely be decided over the next several weeks. Right now, things could go either way. Some critics and viewers have wondered how long it will be before the show runs out of material.
What do you think? Is Mike & Molly worth watching? Did you find the fat jokes offensive? Would you cancel or keep it?

each and every week the slew of fat jokes are getting old. cancel it
Keep it, keep it, keep it!!! I laughed until I cried. It is the first show I have seen in forever that is sweet, funny and worth sitting through commercials to watch.
This new sitcom is definitely a KEEPER! It is refreshingly light and demonstrates how we should all be accepting of ourselves – as people. I hope that the fun-poking and slight name-calling by the other cast members is kept to a minimum – too much of that would be tiring and then, finally, offensively cumbersome. The two main actors themselves are quite entertaining, and I hope that this show continues and becomes a legendary winner.
What a sorry excuse to poke fun at fat people. Bring back The Big Bang Theory
What a creul show. i hate it. cancel it
They made a terrible mistake moving The Big Bang Theory to Thursdays for this crap. Unfunny, Uncreative and very harsh to the hefty people of the world. bring Big Bang back to Mondays and either cancel or move this to Thursdays
Love it!! My husband and I laughed so hard…Very funny!!
THIS IS THE FUNNIEST SHOW ON TV RIGHT NOW!!! HAS THE FUNNIEST JOKES AND I CAN’T STOP LAUGHING THROUGH THE WHOLE THING. THEY WOULD BE CRAZY TO CANCEL IT. THE MOM AND SISTER MAKE THE WHOLE SHOW!! I WISH IT WAS AN HOUR LONG THOUGH…..
Absolutely funny! Need to promote the show more, I never saw a promo for it but dvr’d it to watch later. I was pleasantly surprised. It’s nice to see overweight actors instead of the usual skinnys. A breath of fresh air! Please don’t cancel.
I LOVED THE SHOW. HOPE IS CONTINUES TO BE AS FUNNY AS MONDAYS SHOW.
It has potential if they lay off the constant fat jokes. It is going to wear thin, just like Ellen got canceled for nonstop gay references. yeah, we get it, move along. Why can’t they just be two people, why does it have to all about the weight? Look at Roseanne and Dan… they were overweight and it wasn’t thrown in your face every episode. Most of America looks like these people. Why all the negative comments…you wear a car cover.. come on.
I love it ,its funny me and my hubby watch it together we have lots of laughs. Its our favorite new show.
I watched it last night and I laughed so hard I lost my breath. Molly is so funny and so is Mike. His facial expressions!!!! Swoozie Kurtz was a hoot as the ****** mother and the sister, god. This is my new favorite show. God you gotta watch it!
I love it – I love it – I love it. Laughed so hard I got a headache. I am sooooo sick of dead corpses and mean people on the screen. This is a seriously great breath of fresh air. Great cast – great writing. Leave it alone. Let us have some fun again after a hard day.
I agree! I love it!
CBS has to keep this show! It’s a breath of fresh air to the sitcom situation. The sister needs to get married off and move out of state, though……she adds some contrast to the show, but with her cleavage always showing, she underminds scenes when with Molly. Mike’s police partner is awesome. CBS doesn’t need to change anything else except the sister, the mom can be irritating, but we think she’s funny. Last night (09.27.10) my jaws were hurting from laughing so much after the first at minutes. This show is the fastest 30 minutes in TV. We LOVE IT!
