Moonlight: TV Show Comes to The CW Network — Two Years Too Late

MoonlightBack in May 2008, after Moonlight had been cancelled by CBS, there was some talk of the vampire series moving over to the CW network. The Media Rights Capital (MRC) company had purchased CW’s Sunday night timeslots, to fill with their own content.

Unfortunately, MRC was committed to using their own shows (a move that certainly didn’t work out very well) and Alex O’Loughlin, Sophia Myles, and Jason Dohring had to start looking for other work. Considering that there are still thousands and thousands of loyal Moonlight fans, you have to think that somebody is regretting the decision.

Well, it took almost two years but Moonlight is finally coming to the CW network. Unfortunately, no new episodes are being produced. The CW will pair the 16 existing episodes with reruns of The Vampire Diaries beginning Thursday, June 3rd.

Here’s the official press release.

Acclaimed Vampire Series starring Alex O’Loughlin Joins “The Vampire Diaries” On Thursday Nights Beginning June 3

May 6, 2010 (Burbank, CA) — Summer just got a lot scarier on The CW. The network will air the acclaimed drama MOONLIGHT on Thursday nights beginning June 3. MOONLIGHT will air from 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET, following encore episodes of the first season of the The CW’s hit drama, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.

On MOONLIGHT, Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) is a captivating, charming and immortal private investigator from Los Angeles, who defies the traditional blood-sucking norms of his vampire tendencies by using his wit and powerful supernatural abilities to help the living. In a life-altering twist of fate, Mick was “bitten” 60 years ago by his new bride, the seductive Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon). Forever 30 years of age, Mick’s as handsome and charismatic as the day he was “turned,” and he eschews others of his kind who view humans only as a source of nourishment. With only a handful of like-minded confidantes for company, including the eternally young, wealthy and mischievous Josef (Jason Dohring), a hedge fund trader who relishes his uniqueness, Mick fills his infinite days protecting the living. One night years ago, a single act of kindness changed Mick when he saved a young girl’s life, making him want to be a better vampire. Now their paths cross again and Mick develops a distinctive bond with Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), who has grown into a beautiful, ambitious internet investigative reporter. Reconnecting with her unleashes feelings Mick knows he can’t pursue without exposing that part of him that would make him a monster in Beth’s eyes. As Mick lives between two realities, fighting his adversaries among the undead and falling in love, he discovers the mysteries and pleasures that a valuable life has to offer.

Produced By: Silver Pictures Television in association with Warner Bros. Television
Executive Producers: Joel Silver, Chip Johannessen, Ron Koslow, Rod Holcomb and Gerard Bocaccio
Co-Executive Producer: Trevor Munson

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that CW or any other network has any plans or interest in resurrecting Moonlight. O’Loughlin is expected to be busy with the new Hawaii Five-0 this fall on CBS (which co-owns the CW network).

What do you think? Will you be tuning in to watch the Moonlight reruns?

I just hate that the show has bin cancelled, leaving me with so mutch cliffhangers it drives me crazy!!!!!! It’s like I was reading a fantastic book and someone closed it shut. I don’t think that a second season is comming. It’s bin so long since the last one has been aired and Alex has his hands full with Three Rivers and Hawai 5-O.
Bud,if there was a new season aired,I would be the first one to watch it!!!!
So I’ll shout it with so manny others : BRING BACK MOONLIGHT!!!!

Of course I will. I want to know how it goes on between Beth and Mick and Ben Talbot. It ends to abruptly. Please bring it back to screen.

Loved this show as well as Blood Ties and both were cancelled. Very short-sighted considering the big interest in vampires in books, movies, and TV shows. Would love to see this come back. Of course, Alex O’Loughlin is already committed to Hawaii 5-0.

i can understand if the series wasnt doing well but this show? heh one season thats pathetic man…they should make many more seasons with the same actors/actresses if they are available now…some people find a show very comforting and heart filling i know i do

For sure the best vampire’s show ever!
Moonlight deserves to come back with another season. I’m fron Spain, and its DVD top 10 ranking. It’s evident its superior quality and characters if compared to Twilight and The vampire diaries.
Moonlight come back soon!

This maybe too late but, they need to bring Moonlight back. Season 1 was left with so many cliffhangers and with all the buzz with all the vampire shows, this one will sure be a hit. Season 1 was terrific, actors were phenomenal. Please reconsider putting it back on the air. Alex O’loughlin is fantastic as Mick and Beth and him such beautiful chemistry together.

They have to shoot the 2nd season, it was very interesting and it would be lame if they wouldn’t continue filming new episodes! Please give us the 2nd season of Moonlight!

Rachel February 3, 2011 at 8:45 am

Moonlight closed it’s season with a very good cliffhanger, which means that followers of Moonlight would definately want to tune into a second season. Now that this “vampire craze” is up, why wouldn’t they produce another season? It’s sure to recieve a lot of viewers, especially after new people watch the first season and decide they, too, would like a second season. The drama itself has mystery and crime, which is about half to three-fourths of what everyone watches now. I mean, everyone knows of CSI, NCIS, Bones, Law & Order, etc. This drama also had romance and, well, drama, which is another large portion of what people want to watch. Lastly, vampires are a hot topic among people today, with Twilight and Vampire Diaries. People would definately watch Moonlight because it has believeable characters (and good actors/actresses!) and a story line that everyone seems to find interesting. Please bring a second season to Moonlight!

I’m truely sorry to have seen Moonlight go off the air. I am watching Sonata today and I do not know if this was the last episode or not. Really the best vamp series ever. Wish it would return as a special involving the origional cast. Closure would be great.

Emily January 28, 2011 at 12:46 pm

Hell yes to the above comment – #TeamBringBackMoonlight *for the win*

i know im a little too late replying but …

im from England and i adore Moonlight!! i was gutted at the ending of the series – the producers or what ever cut the show in the middle of a storyline with no explanation as to what happened with the characters! i mean GOD! what happened to Coraline, and what happened to Josef and his girfriend – did he turn her? and oh my god! what happened about the cure? the producers have left the audience with unanswered questions, which should not be up to the audience to come up with answers themselves!!!

They should make another season (even if its just a short one) so that they can answer the questions and it will also show how popular moonlight is and im pretty sure that the ratings would shoot through the roof!!

PLEASE PLEASE you have to make a second season you have to!!
i love moonlight <3 it is the best show in the world! much better than the vampire diaries so please please please bring back Moonlight!!

powella March 12, 2011 at 8:46 pm

I throughly enjoy Moonlight. I enjoy the vampire and human love story. I disagree with some critic that said that Mick and Beth actors did not have any chemistry.

PATRICIA April 28, 2011 at 1:40 pm

You have to bring back this terrific episode which I enjoyed so much and looking
foward to 2nd episode. its better then Vampire Diarys
