Starz was very happy with the early reception of their new Outlander TV show so they gave it an early season two renewal. The cable channel has often given quick renewals but the series are then often cancelled after two seasons. Will Starz regret giving Outlander a second year order so soon? Would it have been cancelled if they had waited?
The Outlander series revolves around Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945. She finds herself mysteriously thrown back in time, to 1743 Scotland, and forced to marry another man to save her life. A passionate affair is ignited. The rest of the cast includes Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Annette Badland, Stephen Walters, Laura Donnelly, Lotte Verbeek, James Fleet, Duncan Lacroix, Roderick Gilkison, Simon Callow, Grant O’Rourke, Bill Paterson, and Simon Meacock.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
1/29 update: Have you heard that season two has been cancelled? Well, it hasn’t.
Final season averages: 0.26 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.04 million total viewers.

What do you think? Do you like the Outlander TV show? Do you think it should have been renewed for a second season or cancelled instead?
We can’t wait for Saturday night. The series is so well done; especially the choice of the actors playing Claire and Jamie. Its really exciting to see the book unfold ! Kudos to Star z and thanks to Diana for all the enjoyment in her books have provided and now on film!
This is the best program I have ever watched. Sam and Catriona make the perfect Jamie and Claire. The countryside is stunning and the music is perfect. The details of the costumes is just so perfect. I feel sorry for the folks who think that this show is not good because they are afraid to even look at it. I sincerely hope that this series goes on for years.
Awesome series…Brings the books to life and more…There is enough to keep those interested in the mystical aspect interested; the historical fans interested and the romance fans happy…The actors selected to portray the characters couldn’t have been better chosen…If True Blood can go for 7 seasons and The Leftovers renewed, Outlander should have already been renewed for the whole set of books…
I’m glad Diana deepened Frank’s character in the TV series. In the book, to me, he was just a passing thought. In the series, we see more of Frank and Claire’s relationship and see the struggle Claire starts to have of her life with Jamie and her “normal” life – life as she knows it. It will be interesting to see how people who have not read the books respond to this over time. These books are thick (800 pages on average). I hope they might get a mindset of each episode as picking up a good book to read… Read more »
This is one of the best shows on television. The acting is superb and the story keeps building. It’s so rare to have a female protagonist who is smart, independent and strong willed.
This series is wonderfully done! They are bringing to life these great characters and doing a superb job. Really giving the viewers interesting history lessons without their knowing it! The weapons, costumes, sets, the fighting, the customs of the period, the harshness of life and even the dirt, in all it’s’ glory, are given honest treatment, making the show full of realism. The sophistication of today’s viewers requires such careful detail. These aren’t books you can easily trim down and simplify into a movie per book, you would lose way too much. A series over several years is the only… Read more »
I have only red the first book, and I am blown away with what the directors, producers, actors, etc. Have done with this series. I hope they count watches thru on demand as well because my only problem with the show is it goes so fast that I find myself saving a couple of episodes for a binge fest. Was the same with the book almost 1000 pages in about 4 days.
I have all of the books and have them multiple times. I throughly enjoyed them and willl most surely read them multiple more times in the future. The series, to me, is a very real complement to the books. The characters in the series fit with the description of them in the books. The cast is really, really good! I am enjoying the series very, very much! The voice over by Claire is how it is written in the books! I truely hope that the series goes on with the idea of one book per tv season! They are too… Read more »
First line of comments should say “have read them multiple times!”
I loved each of the 8 books, and now I am captivated by the series. I love Jamie. Who wouldn’t? I also watch it several times during the week. The music and scenery add so much to the characters and their lives. I would love to have a CD of the music.
It will be impossible to wait for Season 2. Thank goodness there will be another one. Don’t even consider cancelling this wonderful, worthwhile production. Thank you!
Outrageous. Show glad they already renewed it
They just started broadcasting the series on Showcase in Canada. Fantastic first episode. I think I could probably sit and watch for hours.
If you read the book this is about jamie and clair and the adventures they get into. 1945 is just the backdrop of the time she came. I didn’t like frank in the book, clair mentions that jamie touches something in her that frank never did. I hope they don’t go back often to 45. I do love the show hope they produce all the books a lot of amazing things happen and it expands a lifetime of jamie and clairs life together
Do these ratings include the viewers who DVR the show or watch thru Starz Play or other On Demand streaming sources? I watch the episodes multiple times as my friends and family catch the episodes when they can.
It’s fascinating so far and the casting is outstanding. Wish I could understand the local language –is it Gaelic ? I know a few words here and there from my Scottish grandparents but not enough to grasp an exchange. Entranced by the Highlands –would like a bit more of the 1945 era. Is it too expensive to keep going back and forth? Obviously I haven’t read the books, so everything is new to me. This may sound silly but I wish I could see the food–there are tables full of dishes and I can’t figure out what they are eating,… Read more »
Hi Barbara, you might enjoy the ‘ Outlandish Companion’ written by Diana Abandon. It has great insights from her extensive research.
Sorry Gabaldon.
I have read all of the books in this series and have loaned them out to friends and family. I love the Starz series and now have my husband, son, mom and dad all hooked on it. Each episode flies by and I really want to just keep on watching. Can hardly wait for the next episode! I, personally, hope there are many, many more seasons to follow!
