Tonight marks the season finale of NBC’s Parenthood. The ratings are down so will it end up being the series finale as well? Will the show be cancelled or return for a fourth season?
Parenthood debuted back in March of 2009 as a mid-season replacement series. The first season’s 13 episodes ended up averaging a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.38 million total viewers. The show was on the bubble but ended up getting renewed.
NBC didnt wait until mid-season to bring it back and season two kicked off in September 2010. With a full 22 episode season, the show’s averages dropped to a 2.1 in the demo and 5.34 million. Parenthood was on the bubble once again but, once again, it ended up being renewed.
This season, the ratings have dropped once again. The third season of Parenthood (not including tonight’s numbers) have averaged a 1.9 in the demo with 5.13 million. Based on the lower numbers at the start of the season, NBC only ordered 18 installments this time around.

Ordinarily, one would expect that Parenthood would be on the verge of cancellation once again. However, because the rest of NBC’s schedule is in such sorry shape, Parenthood’s ratings actually look pretty good by comparison.
Out of the 17 scripted programs that have aired on NBC this season, Parenthood has the sixth highest demo ratings, beating out shows like Community, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, and Grimm. On our NBC ratings report card, Parenthood registers a firm “B.”
Based on the season numbers and the fact that Parenthood is co-produced by Universal Television, NBC’s own production company, it’s almost guaranteed to be back for a fourth season.
But, what do you think? Do you think Parenthood should be renewed or cancelled? How long should the series reasonably continue?

Please, please, please bring Parenthood back. Its one of the few shoes I look forward to each week. Most of TV is violence and murder. It helps my spirit to see something that shows how valuable family and love is.
Please continue this show. Make sure Ray Romano returns. I like it better when it is less panoramic and concentrates on one or two families. The family with the lawyer mom is the least interesting to me. Lauren Graham, Peter Kraus and Dex Shepard (and Ray Romano) are the most interesting actors (characters). Sometimes the series doesn’t stay long enough on any one situation to get the meat out of it. That is its greatest weakness.

I do not watch alot of tv beacause there is so much crime and violence on it.Thie show,is a breath of fresk air and is very realistic. It has helped me with things in my family as well.I really hope you don’t let them negative tv take over.Take a stand and keep this show alive:)thanks
Please don’t take off one of the only clean family safe tv show left. I don’t have to worry about nasty language. They reach real life family problems. PLEASE……PLEASE……PLEASE…don’t take PARENTHOOD from us!
NBC would be making a mistake IF they got rid of Parenthood. It’s the best show that they have and they need to extend the episodes to the normal 22 shows instead of 15. Parenthood is a wonderful show with great characters that make you feel as though you are part of the Braverman family! You’ve got great actors (Bonnie, Craig, Lauren, Peter, Dax and Mae) who make this show what it is, how could you not renew it for a 5th season and beyond! My husband and I watch this show, we laugh and cry, PLEASE don’t take this… Read more »
Great post. I agree with you 100%
I would be interested to know if your ratings total include DVR’ed events. We purposely watch this as one of our few weekly TV treats. I would hate to see it cancelled! What else would we talk about during our Wednesday lunch?
Canceling Parenthood would be a huge mistake……Are you kidding me????? This is one of the best shows on television. I wait for Tuesday to watch the next episode and now to think it won’t be back is ridiculous. With grace, edginess and emotion the program addresses real issues that families and the individuals that make up these families of our times really face. I can only trust that we as the community that watches will continue to be entertained with this quality programming………. Kat Van Horn
Please don’t cancel another excellent show!!!!!!It is such a great show and one that can relate to so many” normal ” issues of today. It is such a realistic family . Not a pretend, everything is ok family . Love all of the characters! Look forward to more years of this wonderfully written series!
Sincerely,Bonnie
Parenthood is a fantastic show. It is a unique part of the NBC lineup. In the midst of all the realty shows and crime drama, it is refreshing to have an alternative to tune in to on Tuesday nights. I love it. Please consider a fourth season. There is a definite audience for it.
I need this show<3
do not cancel thsi amazing show about…. FAMILY
Parenthood is a good show, well done without depending on tragedy or violence. Please, please, PLEASE keep it going.
Please renew this show, thank you
This Program is the Best Program on TV. The Program is the only real life stories, that we all can relate to. If this Program was to be canceled, I would have nothing to watch. I have many friends that look forward to watching and we get together and talk about it. This show should also be on at an earlier hour and should have many seasons to come. There is nothing on TV and has not been for along time. Please do not drop this program it would be a shame. I am a huge FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My daughter and I watch this and cry most weeks. She has two autistic sons and Max is just amazing. Add to that she has fought breast cancer this past year. It is our favorite show. Why on earth would they cancel it!
