Parenthood: What Happened? Has the NBC TV Show Been Cancelled?

ParenthoodWe’ve received quite a few e-mails from readers who are been worried that Parenthood has been cancelled by NBC. Well, it hasn’t been canned and will actually be returning on January 4th. That’s the good news but fans shouldn’t get too complacent. The drama hasn’t been performing all that well and certainly isn’t assured of a third season.

Last May, Parenthood was one of those shows that was “on the bubble” but still ended up being renewed. Though season one premiered with a 3.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 8.1 million viewers, it soon after dropped to a 2.3 rating and 5.83 million viewers. The 13 episodes of season one ended up averaging a 2.6 in the demo and 6.38 million total viewers.

For season two, Parenthood debuted at about the same demo rating it had at the end of season one. Unfortunately, that didn’t last. In mid-November, shortly before it went on hiatus, Parenthood hit a series low of a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.8 million viewers.

The first half of the season has averaged a 2.1 in the demo and 5.22 million. Parenthood is currently the seventh-highest rated scripted program on the network, falling in the middle of the list, just below The Event. While it’s not in immediate danger of being cancelled, the show’s certainly not safe either. Its fate will ultimately be decided by how well it performs when it returns from the six week hiatus. Most shows don’t typically fare very well and ratings drop after a hiatus. Will Parenthood be the exception?

I love this show !!…..in general I am not much of a tv watcher, but I absolutely do not miss this one. I can’t wait for it to come back on and will be so disappointed if it gets cancelled. Tell your friends to watch !

Parenthood is the BEST show I have seen in YEARS.. I do not think I could stand it..if you said it was going off the air. I laugh, I cry..I wait weekly to see it.. how could anyone think it is not going well- I do not understand. We need more shows to air like these..

Parenthood was the only T.V. program I watched. Our entire family – three generations – enjoyed it together. I truly hope the ratings pick up.

I can not live without this show!!! We need to get the ratings up but how?? I love it!! I am not a TV person and this is the only show I have watched and never missed an episode since Dawson’s Creek!! In need of a fourth season!!!

There are so few quality shows that I look forward to watching, but this was one of them. The writer truly “nails” it when it comes to generational relationships and modern day family issues. I agree. Many people I mention it to are unaware of it.

This show is one of the few that I looked forward to and it’s gone. Shame on NBC but then that’s why they not a good network.

It was one of the most enjoyable shows of the season. There was no bad language and it was just a joy to watch. Goooood Actors, good story lines. PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE RENEW THE CONTRACT.

I love Parenthood, and miss it. I think a long hiatus hurts the ratings,as loyal viewers watch otldher shows when it is off for so long. Also it should be advertised more-as there isn’t many good quality family shows on the air now. Please don’t cancel it, as it would be missed,

We love this show. Actually we have learned so much by following Max’s progress with Aspergers – making it easier to understand our nephew. Cast special guests and advertise……get everyone excited about Parenthood. Not many realistic – good clean family programming out there……..this one is exceptional.

Parenthood is a quality program! The network needs to air it earlier in the evening so more viewers will watch. it would be a shame if this were to go off the air!
