Prison Break: After the Shocking Finale, What’s Next?

Prison Break series finaleAfter four seasons of jail, torture, perilous escapes, stabbings, and death, Michael Scofield’s saga has come to an end. Tonight’s Prison Break series finale solved many of the drama’s ongoing storylines and then, we were treated with a montage that shows our “heroes” four years down the road. And then, the unthinkable happened. While fans have all been expecting a big finish, few expected it would truly end this way.

Prison Break follows architect Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) whose half-brother Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) has been jailed for a murder he didn’t commit. To save his brother’s life, Michael concocts a detailed plan to have himself imprisoned and then to free both of them. Along the way, they realize they’re involved in a far-reaching conspiracy with dire consequences for all around them.

The show’s massive cast has included Amaury Nolasco, Robert Knepper, Wade Williams, Sarah Wayne Callies, William Fichtner, Paul Adelstein, Marshall Allman, Rockmond Dunbar, Jodi Lyn O’Keefe, Robin Tunney, Stacy Keach, Leon Russom, Phillip Edward Van Lear, Peter Stormare, Muse Watson, and Patricia Wettig.

The FOX drama debuted to solid ratings in 2005 but, over time, the audience’s interest has dwindled. In January it was announced that the show had been cancelled and that the story would soon come to a close.

As difficult as it is to take, Michael’s final fate does makes some sense. Executive producer Matt Olmstead told the LA Times, “When we got to the end, the only real, noble thing for Michael is to have it be that what he did — the initial act and the ramifications — were not in vain and weren’t selfish,” Olmstead said. “So, good comes out of it, but he himself would also have to pay a sacrifice.”

Olmstead tells EW that, “It just felt a little weird for us to have Michael and Sara holding hands on the beach walking away — though that would be gratifying in the moment. Knowing that there was pretty much a scorched path behind them in terms of what happened, [having him die] balanced the books for us. He also paid the ultimate sacrifice and, in doing so, everyone else close to him was able to live, including his child.”

Thankfully for fans, the story’s not over just yet. There’s a two-hour made-for-DVD movie that will be released on July 28th. It’s a self-contained story that takes place during the four year fast-forward; soon after the characters are exonerated but before Michael’s death. We’ll learn the details about Michael’s big sacrifice and whether it’s directly tied to his condition.

Olmstead explains the premise this way, “Sara is on the hook for [killing] Michael’s mother and she gets locked up while pregnant. The tables are turned… once a doctor in prison now imprisoned, and Michael’s on the outside. The majority of the cast is back. It’s Michael, Lincoln, Sara, Sucre, T-Bag, Mahone… all the heavy-hitters.”

While Olmstead is sorry that Marshall Allman (Linc’s son) wasn’t available to return for the finale, he doesn’t have any regrets about how they’ve ended the Scofield story. He says, “Every story was exhausted. Every creative juice wrung out. It was a completely worthwhile experience, and I know the other writers [agree]. It was a difficult show to pull off, and we did it.”

What do you think? A fitting end or a disappointment? Either way, will you be buying the DVD in July?

As much as you would want to end this show so badly, you shldn’t let us get so disappointed. After spending so many man-hours just to witness the end of the wicked and the good in their safe haven, you shldn’t make us witness the nightmares of hopelessness and despair. Please give us (Michael & the viewers) another chance to make things right. Just one more chance for now…

A few weeks ago I began watching Prison Break from the beginning along with several friends via Netflix. We had “viewing parties” a couple of times a week where we would order a pizza, pop a huge bowl of popcorn, and settle in for a couple of episodes. As the weeks progressed we found ourselves dropping Prison Break lingo such as, “watch it or you’ll end up in the shoe”, “uh-oh so & so is gonna ‘chicken foot’ ya”, etc… As the series unfolded we raved about the exploits of the Prison Break crew and many of us made plans to purchase the entire series on DVD until the final episode which we HATED! We stayed up late into the night discussing our feelings. Not a single person out of 18 liked it. To be honest we regret have invested so much time watching the series. None of us have retained plans to purchase the series on DVD. Nor to we plan to watch it again which is something we’d decided to do in the fall. The “movie” was subpar and anti-climatic. At this point we’ve dropped the Prison Break lingo from our everyday vocabulary and not a one of us speaks fondly of the show. We stuck with the last season of the show simply to enjoy the well-deserved happy ending which never came. Truly I regret having invested my free time into the story. We don’t need a tv show to “balance the books” for us. A recurring premise had been “have faith” that this will work out… Yet it didn’t and I feel completely let down by the entire Prison Break experience. Had I known the way it ended I would never have invested the time in watching the show.

Unbelievable! I am so disappointed with the final episode. I have tried to understand the logic behind having Michael die but I get nothing. To have him go through all that he has only to kill him off in the final episode makes no sense. I believe Sara and Michael deserved a happy ending.

Thanks,
Francine

I remember dr. Tancredi once said in one of her lines, “Is life a tragedy or there are hopes?”, with Scofield died, you’re making us believe that life is tragedy…

in my opinion, for a brilliant story like prison break, the writer has a very tactical thoughts of bringing things gloomy wrapped up in the end.. it is heart wrenching. because, when this story was opened with such great hope, some little faith here and there (amongst those very realistic twists), and some new light and directions, it turned out that the writer put those hopes and faith on a death row.. with scofield died, you’re making the story left with no messages at all.. the show left the viewers having high hopes, and burned them all. yet, since the writer have continously emphasized on scofield and burrows to have a little faith, and since we don’t actually see scofield’s dead body on the show, we may have a little faith that there’s a chance FOX might want to reconsider bringing scofield back to the show on season 5. cheers!!!

i think there should be a season 5 not only that the final break was heartbreaking i thought you could have had a bit of good out of it, its not because the ratings went down that you thought enough is enough you fox cundt be A**ED carring on the story line and let all the public and FANS down, its not fair we should have the choice wether there is another season not fox..

i have never been so depressed in my life since it stop wentworth miller is indescribable he is amazing and would love to meet him in person he is such a sweet heart please please please bring a season 5 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx PLEASE :)
