What’s This TV Show About?
Airing on the CBS television network, Pure Genius is a high-tech medical drama. At Bunker Hill Hospital, Silicon Valley tech titan, James Bell (Augustus Prew), pairs brilliant medical minds with technology gurus and sidesteps bureaucracy in the interest of saving lives — including his own. Bell enlists an exceptional, yet controversial veteran surgeon, Dr. Walter Wallace (Dermot Mulroney) to help him revolutionize health care. As Chief of Staff, Dr. Wallace oversees a trail-blazing team including the candid Dr. Zoe Brockett (Odette Annable); the idealistic and overly literal neurosurgeon, Dr. Talaikha Channarayapatra (Reshma Shetty); former gangbanger Dr. Malik Verlaine (Aaron Jennings); intense neurologist Dr. Scott Strauss (Ward Horton); and tech genius Angie Cheng (Brenda Song).
Season One Ratings
The first season of Pure Genius averaged a 0.86 rating in the 18-49 demographic and drawing an average of 5.34 million viewers. Find out how Pure Genius stacks up against the other CBS TV shows.
On May 15, 2017, it was revealed that Pure Genius has been cancelled so there won’t be a second season. Could it be revived someday? Stay tuned for updates.
Telly’s Take
While CBS has not officially cancelled Pure Genius, this medical drama’s prognosis is grim. In November of 2016, after just four installments had aired, the network passed on ordering the back nine episodes of Pure Genius, season one. The only CBS TV show it outperforms in the demo is Elementary. Right now, it looks like the Pure Genius (likely series) finale will air on January 26th. Barring a miracle, CBS will cancel Pure Genius. I have started circling this one and am all but certain there will be no season two.
5/15/17 update: CBS has cancelled Pure Genius after one season. Details here.

What do you think? Were you hoping that CBS would renew their Pure Genius TV show for a second season? Are you upset that CBS has cancelled Pure Genius, instead?
This show has been great! I loved each weeks epidodes. Don’t cancel it….I hate that you guys introduce us to shows and them yank them away leaving us hanging!!! Get rid of some of the other junk before this please!!!
What’s wrong with all these company executives? How can they even think to cancel Pure Genius. The series itself was nothing short of just that… Pure Genius. It is a great show. If they are to cancel the series, then sell it to another company with heart and smarts. Pure Genius just cannot be cancelled.
Pure Genius has a great cast, good writing, and heart. Bring it back…I’ll watch.
Do not cancel show!! I love it
Pure Genius is one of the few TV shows I keep checking on to see if it is being renewed. I can’t believe there is any question. Come on. Take the chance. I am 75 and know good shows when I see them.
Going into the Fall season of 2016, I thought “Pure Genius” had such an interesting premise (a hospital with cutting-edge technology to treat rare diseases that would be incurable in real life) that I was willing to check it out. I was disappointed by the mediocre critical reception and ratings/viewership for “Pure Genius”, so I decided to quit watching the series after its eighth episode.
And to think, I actually preferred “Pure Genius” over “Code Black”.
I could not watch the show at the time it was on but I recorded and watched every single episode. I live the show, characters and stories. Always a happy ending. It was not about sec, drugs or violence, just helping people live their lives healthy and happy. Please, bring it back.
Please, please, please renew this show. My husband and I have stressful jobs and getting to watch Pure Genius is something we get to do together to de-stress and have a feel-good getaway from real-life for an hour. Love the characters and the interesting, unusual storylines. Please renew it; some of us want to watch shows of substance and not just sex and violence.
I love Pure Genius! Please bring us more!
Just when we get involved in the characters you take it away. It’s a very interesting and heart warming TV show. Give it more time!
Pure Genius is a fun show to watch. It is Futuristic, Hopeful, Interesting, Romantic and just a Great Time !
Hoping that CBS recognizes that not everyone wants to watch the detailed violence of some other shows : we want to be entertained.
There should be a place for Pure Genius on TV.
This is a great show! It deserves to be on tv.
Give the show another season, good depth of story, I think it will catch on if given a bit more time
Thought Pure Genius as a show was just that………pure genius!!! Some of the treatments & cures were a bit “out there”, but just goes to show how ingenious science can be in the medical field. Perhaps in the near future some of what was shown could actually happen to cure popular fatal diseases.
This is a great show that should be given a second chance. Don’t cancel, give it more time.
