FOX has a new family comedy, Raising Hope, on their schedule but it’s certainly nothing like ABC’s The Modern Family. How did it do in the ratings? Big numbers or immediate cancellation danger?
Raising Hope follows a young pool-cleaner (Lucas Neff) who becomes a father after a one-night stand with a female fugitive. The rest of the cast includes Garrett Dillahunt, Martha Plimpton, Shannon Marie Woodward, Skyler Stone, Bijou Phillips, and Cloris Leachman.
The sitcom debuted on Tuesday night at 9pm to an average 3.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.3 million total viewers. It was in third place in both categories. That’s pretty good, especially considering the competition in that timeslot.
However, it’s not so positive when you consider how much of its lead-in audience that Raising Hope lost. At the end of the season premiere episode of Glee, FOX had a 6.0 rating in the demo and 13.5 million viewers. Raising Hope lost nearly half of that audience.

What’s more, the sitcom lost 10% of its viewers halfway through the show. Those people probably won’t be back to watch future installments. It also doesn’t help that the sitcom that followed it, Running Wilde, is doing much worse.
While the numbers for Raising Hope might be good enough on their own, FOX is surely not pleased that it lost so many lead-in viewers.
The show’s future will ultimately be determined by how well it performs in the coming weeks. Right now, things don’t look good.
What do you think? Did you watch Raising Hope? Is it enjoyable? Will you watch or should it be cancelled already?

AWESOME!!! My hubs and I laughed a LOT! Delightful off-beat comedy, I hope it stays around!
Loved it–it is just about normal people:
This one to me is a keep. I has a little “malcom in the middle” aspect to which surprisely i liked, because i did not care for that show. but this one seems much more family at the end. the show is going to be entertaining to see all the new things he and his family are going to go though. to me it feels like it is picking up where CBS “accidentally on purpose” left off and I LOVED that show!
I really enjoyed the show! it’s great!
I loved it! Martha Plimpton was absolutely amazing. I agree that people who left be4 the end really missed out on something. The ending was touching…
It reminds me a bit of “My name is Earl”.
I’m going to watch it next week, that’ for sure!
The people who loved “Juno” and “Malcolm in the Middle” need to find this show. I laughed out loud several times during this episode and anyone who left the show before it ended really cheated themselves out of the warmth that is at the core of this show. Everyone tell your friends about “Raising Hope”!
Garcia seems to have a knack with blue collar characters. The most decent sit-com folks to come along on TV in many years inhabited Camden County with Earl Hickey. I wouldn’t count this show out just yet. It just needs to find its sea legs and build buzz.
Such a sour little article…. I have heard nothing but incredibly great word of mouth about this. I loved the pilot and can’t wait to see more. I will bet after the LONE STAR debacle, FOX is thrilled that this did so well. I think it’s the highest rated sitcom debut for FOX in years. I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss this little gem.
This show is worse than My name is Earl
it was the absolute best and most hilarious show I’ve seen. Even funnier than modern family. you guy would be stupid not to keep it.
Absolutely the funniest diaper changing scene I’ve EVER seen! Gorgeous funny funny show! Bravo!
I haven’t laughed out loud so many times in a half hour period in a loooong time!!! I typically watch dramas…not a big sitcom girl…but THIS I will watch…loved it! Hilarious!
The best show!!Very funny and I hate to admit it but very realistic. I told everyone I talked to today about the show. I told them it is on right after Glee on Fox … so don’t change the time, I don’t want to lose the show. I would like to see it again before the next one.
This show might be too off beat for the middle of the road tv watcher.
My wife and I were laughing out loud. Tv does not do that to us.
Very fun!
The best show to come along in ages! I really hope it doesn’t get cancelled. The cast is outrageous! Topless Cloris Leachman? That’s hard to top. Hilarious!
Thought it was ok, but not great. Maybe it will pick up in the coming weeks.
