Ruby & the Rockits: ABC Family Sitcom Cancelled; No Season Two

Ruby & the RockitsABC Family has decided to pass on ordering a second season of its freshman sitcom, Ruby & the Rockits.

In Ruby & the Rockits, former teen icon Patrick Gallagher (Patrick Cassidy) has been living quietly with his wife (Katie A. Keane) and their two sons, teenage Jordan (Austin Butler) and sarcastic preteen Ben (Kurt Doss).

Things change when Patrick’s former band-mate brother, David (David Cassidy), shows up with David’s previously unknown teenage daughter, Ruby (Alexa Vega). David doesn’t want to give up his show-biz life and leans on his brother to help raise his daughter, who’s a rising star on her own.

The show debuted on July 21st to 1.6 million viewers and 654,000 in the 18-49 demographic, making Ruby the second best sitcom launch in the network’s history. It even built out of the audience of fellow freshman comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.

Should Ruby be cancelled?

Unfortunately, those numbers didn’t hold up and the sitcom lost steam in the following weeks. While the network has renewed 10 Things for another 10 episodes, ABC Family has decided to dump Ruby after one short season.

The final episode is scheduled to air on Tuesday, September 22nd. In the episode, titled “Smells like Teen Drama,” Jordan and Ruby compete for the attention of the same girl. Privileged’s Lucy Hale guest stars as Ruby’s best friend and Jordan’s new girlfriend. Meanwhile, Ben is being bullied at school. David and Patrick want him to fight back while his mother has a very different point of view.

What do you think? Should the show have been cancelled or did ABC Family make a mistake?

Oh no! This was one of the rare shows that my 12-13-year-old daughters and I could actually enjoy together; we never missed it. I would have thought families like ours – parents and teens/tweens would like the show and represent good demographics for advertisers; I shudder to think what will air instead.

ABC family!!! ur making a huge mistake for cancelling the show. I’m not totally an Alexa Vega fan, but her acting here was ’superb’ didn’t know she has a sense of humor. And the plot of the show was nice its about FAMILY, I like all the characters.

Again….ABC Family cancels another show that youc an watch with your kids – just like Falcon Beach. My 10 year old daughter loves Ruby & the Rockets and watches it over and over on the dvr. I just do not understand how you chose your programming. Two shows that you can watch with your kids gone and you have Greek that I can’t have my daughter watch!

NO!!! All the shows I love get canceled after one season or dont even end up finishing one! Like roomates and Falcon Beach. This is an amazing show and its really funny… It also deals with things that are going on with real life familes … Thats why I loved it so much. ABC Family is making a HUGE mistake with this one!!!

My daughter and I enjoyed this show a great deal. I’ve even downloaded all the music for her. this is a great disappointment. I liked watching the Cassidy’s and she just liked hearing that she was watching a show with someone in it that I watched when i was her age. I thought it was good and getting better. We’ll miss it.

Once again, ABC Family is making a huge mistake by cancelling another show. I love both Alexa Vega and Austin Butler, and I love their relationship on the show. My parents often don’t like the shows I watch, but this one we all watched together! ABC Family should bring back Ruby and the Rockits!

This is so dissapointing. This is one of my favorite shows and i’m sure it is to many others to. Disney Channel and Nickoledeon is going downhill in my opinion besides for maybe Wizards of Waverly place and Icarly. This is one of the few shows that is actually funny and that people of all ages can enjoy, especially kids. I understand that the show didnt get a lot of viewers, but maybe its because of lack of advertising on ABC familys part. Its just such a shame. I think ABC family should give it another chance because its totally worth it. And another thing about ABC please put Boy Meets World back on Air. Thats a great show!!

What a mistake to cancel Ruby and the Rockits. Alexa Vega is pitch perfect as Ruby: sweet, charming and talented. Actually, the entire cast was terrific. Where are young people going to go to find an enjoyable family show? There aren’t many out there that you can sit down with your kids and enjoy. Most of what is viewed as family shows are vulgar. Also, do they think they’ll find something better? They won’t. Rather than stick with shows and try to build an audience, networks
just swing the axe, and the replacements usually fair worse. When you put a new show on during the same time slot as NCIS – the number one rated TV show – what do you expect. As an adult I love Ruby and the Rockits. What a waste ABC Family. You’ve lost one audience member – permanently!

i think it was an okay show, but the context could get pretty perverted. i was uncomfortable to watch it with my family, even though i never missed and episode. one example of what i didnt like from the show had something to do with “tyrannosaurus sex”…
