Saving Hope: NBC Medical Series; Cancel or Keep?

cancel or keep Saving HopeThough the networks are overflowing with reality series this summer, there are some new scripted TV shows. One is Saving Hope, a medical series that NBC has licensed from Canada. Will this one stick around or be cancelled instead?

As Saving Hope begins, a hospital’s charismatic Chief of Surgery (Michael Shanks) suffers a massive brain hemorrhage on his wedding day and ends up in a coma. This leaves the hospital in chaos and his fiance and fellow surgeon (Erica Durance) in a state of shock. It doesn’t help matters that her former boyfriend (Daniel Gillies) — also a brilliant surgeon — has arrived to work at the same facility. Others in the cast include Michelle Nolden, K. C. Collins, Kristopher Turner, Julia Taylor Ross, Ben Ayres, Huse Madhavji, Salvatore Antonio, and Glenda Braganza.

In terms of the ratings, Saving Hope debuted on June 7th with a disappointing 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.24 million total viewers. It ranked in a distant fourth place, garnering less than half of what CBS drew with a second place repeat of Person of Interest. It was truly a terrible performance.

Should Saving Hope be renewed?

The following week, the demo remained the same and the viewership grew slightly, to 3.98 million. It was in fourth place in the demo once again.

Of the eight summer programs that NBC has been airing this summer, Saving Hope is dead last and is doing even worse than the network’s Rock Center with Brian Williams. On our summer ratings report card, the show has an “F” grade.

While NBC is likely paying very little money to air Saving Hope, the ratings are so poor that there seems to be no reason for the network to bring it back for a second season. The show could continue in Canada however so, if that happens, US viewers could potentially be able to see future episodes if NBC drops it.

But, what do you think? Do you like Saving Hope? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?

I love Michael Shanks and wanted 2 support him but the show is kinda dissappointing. The show is still early in the season so i am eager 2 see how they develop the other characters and the show itself. Its ok, not bad, but needs lots of work. Im just annoyed the Shanks doesnt get to interact with the main characters cuz he’s n a coma. So will he be n a coma 4 the whole season? And if there is a 2nd season will he still be n a coma? I want 22 see him act not minimal acting by him. I like Goran from Vampire Diaries, I would like to see them develop him character a little more. Hopefully by the end of the season they have done all of that cuz NBC is quick 2 cancel shows, they havent had a good show that lasted a few seasons since Heroes.

This show is junk. I tried to watch it but the characters just have zero chemistry and the lines are flat.
I actually gave it a shot due to the acting credentials involved and because I thought it might replace HOUSE in my tivo schedule, but this is just sad. Kill it now before it grows into an amorphous mess.

I’m not overly thrilled by this show, but I like the actors, so I’d like to see it continue. Funny that it’s last in NBC’s summer offerings considering it’s the only original programming I’m watching on broadcast TV — let alone NBC — till The L.A. Complex comes back to The CW.

Personally, I am really annoyed that anyone is talking of canceling a show only three episodes in. Ok, so, yes, I am a Michael Shanks fan and he is why I tuned in. But, fan of his or not, I am NOT one of those mindless followers who will watch garbage to prove my fandom. This is NOT garbage. At all. Sure, there are some kinks to be worked out, it is a NEW show and all new shows have to work out kinks and get into their groove. Anyone ever go back and watch season 1 of anything popular and think to themselves, wow, I watched that? I am sure you did. My point being that I have watched it every week because there is something to draw me back, week one – the story, week two-the movement, week three-the crossover. I am enjoying it so far, Shanks eye candy or not, and will be rather annoyed if NBC just cancels it and replaces it with some trash reality TV show.

I love Saving Hope. Has a great cast and great story line. Hopefully nbc will give it a chance, but nbc isn’t much on giving a show a chance. NBC which also owns syfy, cancells shows at the drop of a hat…..keeping fingers crossed that this one will slip by them though.

KEEP SAVING HOPE! It should not be cancelled and taken off the air due to lack of promotion which lead to low ratings. The show is truly phenomenal and the actors are outstanding. I will be very disappointed if NBC lets this show go. :(

I didn’t get to see the premiere but caught the second episode , an it’s intrigued me enough to watch more.

I guess people these days rather see the kardashians whine and complain about what car to buy rather than shows like this

I realize NBC doesn’t air those realty shows, I’m just saying there are great shows comi out of Canada that don’t seem to pick up momentum in the US and it wouldn’t shock me to think it had anything to do with the teen mom and “reality” shows out there spamming the tv screens

Hope they keep this show , I happen to enter enjoy the cast :) hello Canadian talent!!

I like it. And I am in the main demographic age group. You can’t be so critical of a show that has only been on for three weeks. And especially when you have weak lead-in shows. I am so tired of reality based shows that have no substance at all. This a much better alternative.

KEEP IT. Saving Hope is a great balance of action, sentiment, adult humor, and medical drama with lovely cinematography and a talented cast. Does NBC think we’d prefer to watch a mindless sitcom of cynical twentysomethings instead?

There’s only been 2 eps, that is not long enough to judge whether or not to cancel.

Keep It. So far I am loving this show. I adore Michael Shanks and the rest of the cast as well. I don’t think it is fair to make a decision after 2 episodes. I have a reminder set every week so I don’t miss and episode. So many of my favorires were already cancelled this year please don’t let saving hope be one of them.
