Smash: Cancelled? NBC Drama Sent to Saturdays

Smash canceledSmash has been sent packing. The musical drama will finish its season on Saturday nights. While the peacock network hasn’t said that the show’s been cancelled, there’s no way they’re bringing it back for a third season.

Smash follows a cast and production team in New York as they try to mount a new Broadway musical. This season, the ensemble cast includes Debra Messing, Christian Borle, Katharine McPhee, Jack Davenport, Megan Hilty, Anjelica Huston, Leslie Odom Jr., Jeremy Jordan, Krysta Rodriguez, and Andy Mientus.

Last season, Smash was a moderate success for NBC, thanks in part to the strong lead-in support from The Voice. It averaged a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.74 million total viewers.

This season, Smash has really suffered without the reality competition’s support. The six episodes that have aired thus far have averaged a mere 1.0 in the demo with 3.48 million.

Other than Fashion Star on Friday nights, Smash is currently NBC’s lowest-rated series.

While there’s no way NBC will be making a third season, there is positivenews. NBC appears to be commited to letting the remaining 11 episodes air. Smash will start running on Saturday nights on April 6th, at 9pm.

What do you think? Are you sad about Smash’s fate? Do you like the show this season?

it’s a shame! the first season was a lot of fun, great drama between the two main lead ladies. they TOTALLY messed it up this season, way too many plots, way too many guest stars (sean p hayes is wretched as in the plot) what happened!! why did they change it? and as much as i love jennifer hudson as a singer who needs her in Smash??! there were enough main characters in the show already. bring back the original team and writers and don’t cancel!!

SMASH was a great show last year. People who don’t watch it, are obviously not into Broadway Musicals. It was fine the way it was last year, but it was changed to try and get a younger audience. By changing it, they also hurt the show in my opinion. They didn’t change it for the better. This show probably requires a more educated and sophisticated audience . So much of what is on t.v. is crap. like most of the reality shows. Oh, and by the way, there are a lot more people over the demographic that tv advertisers try for, who have a lot more money to spend and who are willing to spend it, than the people who don’t know a good show when they see it.

This is such a brilliant show!!! All fans will be sad to see this show finish.Very brave to produce a musical series when cop shows are the popular formats. I give NBC 10/10 for taking the chance on producing a show which most people wouldn’t watch owing to their pathetic television viewing choices……..

Most of the time my TV is off!!! SMASH brought me back – season 1 was fantastic – saw no reason for any changes!! What a great cast!!
Please NBC keep at least one classy TV you’ll be proud of in history !!

This show was garbage from the very beginning my wife couldn’t get through the first half hour of the very first episode. The reason and only reason it got a second season it was on after The Voice in the first season. Good riddance to this show

The show is amazing. I really love the cast and the music. Bad decisions were made on this show to get those ratings & people choose to use DVR because of its bad time slot & the people working on broadway can’t watch because they are working on Tues that lead to low ratings. This is one unique show. Sometimes its better to be different than the other shows cops, doctors, reality shows, etc. For me, this is much better than Glee. I hope if its possible some other network can save this show and the cast.

Keep Smash on! Change the writers, they ruined it so far this year. Too many story lines going on at one time. Everybody wants Karen and Derrick to get together. So far writers keep moving in a different direction. They also contradict a lot of what was established previously last season. Characters seem to hold completely different attitudes about each other without a reason., loyalties switching, doesn’t make sense. The idea of this series is great, unique. Many of original cast are great. GET NEW WRITERS FAST!

I am very disappointed that they are cancelling Smash. The music is great and it has a story line unlike Glee…..I am sick of all the reality shows. What ever happend to a weekly series that has a story line that people can relate too??
