NBC was really hoping for a ratings hit with Smash, the network’s most-hyped TV series of the season. They gave it a lot of promotion during Super Bowl XLVI (the most-watched TV broadcast in history) and gave it their strongest lead-in, The Voice. Did all of this pay off?
It certainly did. Based on the fast affiliate numbers, Smash registered a 3.8 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 11.5 million total viewers. It easily won the 10pm timeslot, something that NBC hasn’t done (excluding the Olympics) since November 3, 2008 when they aired a Saturday Night Live election special.
Compared to last week’s edition of lethargic Rock Center with Brian Williams, NBC was up by 375% in the demo and 250% in total viewers. Compared to an edition of Harry’s Law one year ago, the network was up by 124% in the demo and 25% in total viewers.
The only downside of the night was that there was a good amount of viewer erosion as the hour progressed. The first half hour of Smash registered a 4.2 demo and the 10:30pm half hour fell to a 3.4 rating.
Still, this was a very positive start for Smash and goodness knows NBC could certainly use it. Monday is a tough night, usually dominated by CBS. We’ll have to wait to see how Smash does in week two, but at least for now it looks like NBC is finally back in the game.
What do you think? Will you be watching Smash? If you’ve already seen it, will you watch again or do you think it should be cancelled too?

WELL, JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW DIFFERENT PEOPLE’S OPINIONS ARE. I, FOR ONE, LOVED THE SHOW – ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT – IT IS NOW NO. ONE FOR ME.
CAN’T WAIT FOR TOMORROW NIGHT………..
Worst rip-off of the season. Sucked BIG TIME.. especially the much over-hyped McPhee
Sucked really bad might not watch NBC every agian…..
Please keep it, don’t let it go!
I didn’t bother, because I already watch Hawaii 5-0 and Castle on Mondays. Will I bother with Hulu or On Demand? I doubt it. It seems like NBC is taking a shot at a Glee type show, that’s all.
P.S. I thought a 3.8 was a “bad” rating. Bunch of my shows got 3.8′s and are no longer around. Hmm.
i download this in 720p web dl so ill give it a shot hello from ireland
Love love loved it! Can’t wait to see it next week!
I thought it was just very entertaining. Can’t wait to see next week!
I saw it On Demand on Comcast on Friday night, but I did like the show, as did my mom. But then I thought Katherine McPhee should have won American Idol Season 5 as well. I plan to continue watching.
Considering all the Super Bowl and other advertising, and that The Voice had a 6.5 with 17.7 million viewers, I think The Smash crashed.
I LOVED IT!!!!!
It sucked big time
LOL yeah, my monday nights are plenty full.
Sorry, I watched H50.
Oh, did that premiere? I guess with Gossip Girl, Alcatraz, Castle, Hawaii 5-0, Being Human, and Lost Girl all in the same night, I didn’t even notice. That’s all right, I wasn’t going to watch, anyway. Just surprised I completely missed (didn’t even channel-surf to) one of the most hyped premieres of the 2011-2012 season.
