The writers strike showed the industry that many people will watch ANYTHING they’re told to regardless of quality. Sadly people will watch it.

Unfortunately network TV stations are getting away from good programming and going to cheaper programming. I’m done with network television. Southland was one of my last loves in the broadcast realm (except for PBS). If I can’t get it online or Netflix then I don’t need to watch it.

The network and ad folks will make more money… by providing programming that will continue decline.

N.B.C. goes from lame to dead as far as I am concerned. Southland was about the only reason I tuned into the Peacock. Nightly News and Sunday Night Football are now the only reason to tune them in. I loved Southland and could care less about Dateline and Jay Leno, they each may be cheaper to produce than Southland and its genre but as they say you get what you pay for. So enj0y your dwindling share of the pie.

NBC canceling “Southland” is just another another step in the continued dumbing-down of a broadcast tv medium that is awash with crappy, cheap “reality” shows and recycled, moronic sit-coms. Thankfully, aficionados of well-written scripted dramas can turn to the likes of AMC and FX if they have cable, a dish, or the internet. With this decision– not even giving the show a chance to air once this fall– NBC execs. clearly think that their viewers are all brain-dead imbeciles that need to have sunshine pumped up their asses 24/7. I, for one, don’t want some snotty-nosed bean-counting desk jockey that farts into a seat-cushion 10 hours a day deciding whether or not I can handle a “dark and gritty” show at 9 o’clock in the evening. Put the damn thing on for a few weeks and let’s see what happens. Here’s hoping that “Southland” gets picked up by another network and ultimately fulfills the promise that it showed last fall. As for “Dateline”, I’d rather sit in a dark room and repeatedly hit myself in the head with claw hammer than watch that dreck.

Big surprise….NBC cans another great program. Did we all not learn our lesson when they did the same thing to a similar program “Third Watch” a couple of years back? Another great show that not a few sort seasons previously was the staple for the network of all things. It too had legs in it for a least another couple of season, but as predicted….great programming gets the Ax in favor of cheap to produce, forgettable garbage. This show was awesome and helped convince me to enroll in the police academy in my city. I was very much looking forward to watching one of the only shows that I like on any network, and definitely the only one I liked on NBC. Which, by the way, I won’t be watching anymore. Leno can suck my balls!

With all the other “cop” dramas on network television Southland was a brisk welcome with its grittiness and true-to-life performance. With that said, I don’t think a series of this caliber would be a fit on the NBC network. In the 8 weeks Southland ran not one episode disappointed; each episode was better than the last. It is a great disappointment to see it lose its home on NBC, but I think if it stayed on network television perhaps FOX should look into it. This show would fit cozily on their network.

What a crock. Finally, a show comes on air that actually is a drama, but accurately shows what the personal lives are like of the police who do the job, and is gripping and keeps your attention. I think the real reason they cancelled the show is because NBC is f’d up, and in the show (which was based in Los Angeles) they actually portrayed the Hollywood people to be very misguided and out of their heads (like an NBA star, and Tom Sizemore as a producer, etc). I think for these reasons, they literally got politically shunned from going on the air with it. As realistic as it could have been, they got fucked. **** NBC, and **** GE. More corporate control of media and political influence = more bullshit with real television. Whatever.

I am so upset to hear that Southland has been cancelled! I just came to the website to check when the 1st show of season 2 would start…and I find this shocking news! I feel in love with this show-it was truly the best thing I had seen in ages. The writing, direction, editing, and momentum were fabulous…not to mention the acting!

I found Southland to be one of the best cop shows on television this year. The acting is good and the actors seem well suited for their roles. Jay Leno’s mindless show is a drag-down slop of a show to say the least. Southland is more than worthy of several more seasons on NBC. I hope NBC has the foresight to return Southland so it’s fans can watch a sensible intelligent series.

Now a days televison has been ran over by simple minded reality show. Every once and awhile we luck out and get some good action, brain twisting drama shows thats keep our brains spinning and our body on the edge of our couchs. Southland was one of these shows. Every week I looked forward to this show, I was actually pleased with the script, drama line and choice of actors, which is something that seems all to rare on t.v now a days. To hear that something this critically acclaimed as be bumped of for yet another talk show that does exactly te same as all the rest is truly upsetting. That season was out of control and to leave the 10 million plus fans in suspense is just ridiculous and if NBC cannot see what a HUGE mistake it is making than hopefully another network like TNT of FX can pick up this beautifully scripted drama. Both networks are known for their execellent dramas like Dark Blue and Nip Tuck and I feel tat a show like Southland would only add to their every raising popularity. To let a show like this one fall in between the cracks would be a huge mistake and a horrible stab in the hearts of those who truly love drama television with well played characters and great story lines. This show belongs in the lines of the great Law and Order Series.

I am stunned. Been waiting all summer and fall for Southland to begin and my son just now informed me that it’s been cancelled. I literally felt nauseated…my stomach just dropped. Yes, I miss ER and was not happy when it left the airwaves, but 15 years of any show is probably too much and I was ready for something new. Southland filled that void to a “T”. The story lines were compelling, the acting some of the best I’ve ever seen on TV. Even my husband, who never watches network shows, commented on how superior the acting was and that the show had an addictive quality to it. The new Jay Leno show is nothing but drivel and bad drivel at that. They shouldn’t have taken the occasional funny bits from The Late Show and try to make an hour-long show out of them…it’s not working. They were funny because they were occasional. I’ve been an avid NBC watcher for decades, but now I’ll only watch the Thursday evening line-up and a few Dateline shows. I’ll tune my TV to any non-NBC channel just to register my disgust at the cancelling of the wonderful Southland. Fingers crossed that another network/channel will pick it up before people forget about it entirely. This is awful.

My husband told me he read about the show in the paper the other day and it said its supposed to return BUT only on a cable network/channel. For some reason the article said it was too “racey/dirty” for NBC….which does NOT make any sense to me BUT this is what I heard.

The acting was spectacular, the writing was fresh, and the story lines were riveting and cutting-edge. I was sooo looking forward to this season. I will never watch Jay Leno 5 nights a week – and to cancel such great scripted programming for him is absurd. I will follow “Southland” where ever it ends up – I just hope it gets picked up by someone…anyone..

Having Jay Leno dominate 33% of the prime-time viewing slots, leaves little hope for Southland, or any other show for that matter, to succeed. Not sure the rational behind that. Maybe I’m in the minority who doesn’t enjoy Leno that much, but well done NBC on your modest variety of programming.

So here I am looking on NBC.com to see when they will air the second season of Southland so I can set my DVR. So I see it on their line-up but I don’t see a return date so of course I go to Google and ask for the return date I get the response that the show has been canceled much to my surpise I was so looking forward to this show coming on I hv been checking each week to se when it will air again I so hope that they find a new network or at least NBC can give us some closure they can’t leave us hanging with the way it ended they should try to shop it to TNT they show incredible shows and they are not afraid of the dark stuff thats what made that show so good. I must say that NBC made a mistake having Jay Leno on in this timeslot is horrible the other newtworks are going to blow NBC out his season

With the demise (apparently) of ‘Southland’ before its second season opener, I now have no reason to watch NBC. They botched it several years by not giving ‘Boomtown’ a chance, they flubbed by giving us then taking away ‘Raines’, they screwed up by not giving ‘Life’ a decent chance at success, and they even cancel of of the funniest shows I have ever had the honor of watching-’My Name is Earl”. At the rate NBC is going, they’ll being back ‘Manimal’. I used to like NBC for its programming and willingness to take a chance (‘Hill Street Blues’) but now the network is run by short-sighted bean counters that do not have a clue. I refuse to watch ‘Dateline’ multiple times a week. I also (even though I like him as a car enthusiast) will not watch the Leno Show. I used to be loyal to NBC. Not anymore….

It was a shame to cancel this show, but it makes sense with their supposed “blame game” to try and pass Leno’s bad ratings off on the shows leading up to Leno. I would also agree that moving an expensive to make show to a “dead” weeknight wouldn’t have helped the show’s plight.

Here’s to hoping SouthLAnd will find a new home, as I will buy the show as soon as it hits the iTunes store.

One of the few shows I was looking forward to this year. NBC is really making some questionable decisions lately. The Leno show is a ratings failure. Southland was a well written, well acted, well produced show. Now we have shows like Trauma, while I will admit was a bit better last week than the first week, but still not good. I am hopeful someone picks up Southlands. This is probably one of the worst TV seasons so far this year. Nothing is really a must watch. FlashForward is decent and the mystery will keep me watching, but I was really looking forward to Southland.

I too loved Southland. If I could not watch it when it was on I would tape it and watch it later. Old school I know. Southlad is a show worth watching. I have called NBC and sent them an email. If NBC does not have the courage to continue airing Southland I hope another network has the sense to pick it up. The actors, plots, and everything else are fantastic. Let’s take this into our own hands and call NBC and the other networks and ask that Southland can still be aired. Only as citizens can we achive our goal and keep Southland on the air.

Dear National Broadcasting Company,

I got sick last night. High fever, uncontrollable chills, heavy chest, wretched cough. It was nasty. I was miserable. In fact I was so miserable, I would have ripped open my veins and injected some heroin just to feel at ease with my sickness.

But now, not even heroin could ease my pain.

This morning, my physical sickness could not match the emotional ill I felt when I learned you canceled “Southland.” I kept thinking to myself that it doesn’t make sense. I mean, it was clear you weren’t open to giving the show much of a chance with the Friday night “death slot”, but at least THAT was a chance. Now — nothing.

In the days of a financial recession, a war that has become so old that even the media avoids talking about it, and when American’s are questioning their own purpose — we look to entertainment to pull us out of these holes. For thirty minutes or two hours, we can escape. We can be entertained and laugh, or cry, or scream or hide behind the pillows.

My dear NBC, I used to turn to your network for these moments. Now, I am afraid I no longer have a reason to stay.

When I look at a show like “Southland,” that was so much more than the critically acclaimed cop drama, but was a show that felt real. A show that transported it’s viewers to a world that was unashamed, unadulterated, and right outside their front door. It was a show that even with its realism, provided the genuine escapism we all love in the compelling and beautiful characters contained within. Because even though they were cops, we could relate to who they were, and what they were going through.

Yes, I just do not understand NBC. I do not understand how a show like “Heroes” gets to stick around, and a veteran master producer in John Wells does not. Don’t get me wrong, I was one of the millions who fell in love with “Heroes.” The first season moved me in every episode. It was exciting and unique. But now it is formulaic. Re-inventing itself every season, and losing viewers rapidly as it goes.

I have heard the rumors that Tim Kring has kept it alive based on the internet following. “Heroes” is the most illegally downloaded show. It is one of the most popular shows on Hulu.com and NBC.com — but is that REALLY a show worth keeping around?

Remember that the best shows are the ones you request time off from work for. The ones you plan dinner around. The shows that you are too scared to go to the bathroom during the commercials, in fear you may miss seconds upon its return.

That show was “Southland.” That show is “Lost.” That show was “ER.” That show is “Grey’s Anatomy” and was “Friends.” “Seinfeld.” “The Simpsons.”

I am one man my friends, but I am a man that knows good television. I was anticipating “Southland” more than any other show this year, and am asking you to resurrect this series. To give this show the shot it deserves, and can the ones that need to go.

Because let’s be honest,

The only reality show anyone really cares about is “American Idol.”

Not “So You Think You Can Dance.”

What a tragedy! This is one of the few cop shows that REALLY tells it like it is! It’s a very strong competitor with the likes of The Closer and Saving Grace. I do hope that the fantastic and realistic stories of LA’s crime fiighters can be picked up by another network. I felt that this series was a great replacement for the thrilling ER series, but looks like the big boys and girls at NBC can’t agree. I’m looking forward to seeing more somewhere out there in television land!

Personally, I don’t follow too many series, but I actually liked Southland and was looking forward to the new season. I hope another network or cable station picks it up and continues to develop the storyline and the characters. It was well acted and didn’t try to varnish over alot of what many of us see in our local papers regarding crime and community based law enforcement. Too bad NBC chose to offer up fluff when it could have stood by a damm good show that really left many of us thinking about the world in which we live.

Yes, they made quite a HUGE mistake in canceling this show. It was excellent, gritty and dark. The characters were well written and I thought the season finale had impressive action without having explosions and other eye catching tricks. In other words, realistic. It was a great show and now I no longer have a reason to even think about checking out the NBC channel. I’m positive another network will pick up the show because unlike people at NBC, there are execs who will appreciate and provide viewers with quality television.

I am so glad to see the other comments sharing the same views I have about this program. I have to admit that I was late to start watching Southland but once I started, I was hooked. This is the only show that I will stop everything to watch and this is the only network show that does not make me feel like my IQ is going down as I watch it. I hope that Mr. Wells makes a sincere effort to find it a new home on another network where it can flourish. Typcially I do not get this worked up about a television program but that is how strongly I feel about it.

I loved this show!! Really NBC… really? Replaced with Dateline?
This is another show that I really liked which they decided to cancel… I’m running out of shows that I actually watch on NBC.. Do they take into account that many of us can’t watch them at their scheduled time and we watch them on the Internet later? That’s what I do… I watch them at lunch or whenever I can but most of the time I don’t have the time to watch them at their scheduled time. I know that Ad revenue is how they support these things, but they run adds on the Internet as well.
I think TV ratings needs to upgrade to the 21st century and realize that watching shows on the Internet is the future and if their ratings aren’t calculating those numbers, then they aren’t getting accurate ratings and are canceling shows that many people really do watch.
I hope Southland finds a new home.

Another network hopefully will pick up this excellent ensemble cast to continue – their storylines were superb – action, human drama. I am tired of all the so-called “reality” shows filling up the networks – not to mention enough talk-shows as well. Bring back more TV dramas, as well as good sitcoms. Whatever happened to “Made for TV movies” of the week??? If more drama shows, such as Southland, are cancelled – what direction is TV going in?

I could see them renewing it to hold on to it, because why would someone drop a gem like that? That Leno used all the timeslots is unfortunate and I hope the show finds a new home, maybe on a competitor in the 10 p.m. slot, or on a cable network (FX). Seems like a good fit for FX. They could jump ship like Scrubs and wind up on ABC, too.
