Both CBS and NBC have launched new TV shows that revolve around smart blonde women who hold important government positions in Washington, DC. CBS’ Madam Secretary has already been renewed for a second season. What will happen to NBC’s State of Affairs? Will it be renewed or cancelled?
State of Affairs follows a top CIA analyst (Katherine Heigl) who assembles the President of the United States’ Daily Briefing (PDB), weighing the vital security issues that face the nation. She has a close personal relationship with the commander-in-chief (Alfre Woodard) as she was once engaged to the president’s now-deceased son. The rest of the cast of this dramatic thriller includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas, and David Harbour.
Taking over for NBC’s highly-rated series The Blacklist, State of Affairs debuted in November to a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.69 million viewers. It was a solid start that was no doubt aided by its strong lead-in The Voice. Some people were also possibly expecting to find a new episode of The Blacklist in the timeslot instead.
In week two, despite still having a strong lead-in, State of Affairs’ ratings dropped more than 36% to a 1.4 in the demo with 5.39 million. They rose up a bit in week three but have been falling ever since. Last week’s installment hit new series lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.62 million viewers.
Though NBC had high hopes for this series, State of Affairs is just not measuring up. The network is poised to finish airing the 13 episode season (there are four episodes remaining after tonight’s) but it’s hard to imagine that they’d consider renewing it for a second season with poor ratings like these.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt recently said, “I’m disappointed in what it’s been doing [in the ratings] the last couple of weeks… It’s a show that I think is a really fine show, so I’m scratching my head a little bit about why we can’t get more people to be there for it.”
There’s still time for the numbers to improve but it doesn’t seem likely they’d be good enough to save the show. Hopefully the season finale will offer viewers some measure of closure to the ongoing storylines.
But, what do you think? Do you like the State of Affairs TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew the series for a second season? How would you improve this show if it was renewed?
You do not drop a good thing ! ! ! ! Finely a reason to watch NBC ! ! ! ! Bring State of Affairs back or just loose viewer ! ! ! !
This show must be re-new…This show is smart and intelligent!! The more get people to watch the more people watch and like it. It just needs another season!!
Yes, yes, yes, please renew this series. I also agree that new shows should be given a solid night and time slot and no skipped weeks. Had this happened with State of Affairs there probably would have been a much higher viewer count! I really enjoy it!!!! Please give it a full season, then decide its fate. I wish there had been more episodes to enjoy the first season!!!!
I think this show is exciting and very topical. Don’t leave us hanging on that cliffhanger. I actually thought Heigle was very good in this part. Please bring it back.
I Like the Show, I would Renew it! I loved Chuck but NBC didn’t see fit to renew it. I hope this show doesn’t go the same way.
RENEW , Just needs more marketing.
Few know about it, Really good series.!
If I ran the network, I’d renew State of Affairs,. I’d also go back to a solid [no weeks of being off] and show all of the shows long enough fior the audience to get hooked and committed to a night and time slot. The way thing are done now, I have no idea what to watch or when, so I read or watch my DVDs. People like consistency abd yes — comfortable ruts. I liked this show very much, as I have many canceled series and and often long for the good old days for TV viewing
I love this show. Everyone is great. Alrie Woodard is a disappointment, but the rest of the show is fantastic. Smart, exciting, believable. Madam Secretary is still on, and it had a slow start in my opinion, why isn’t SOA!!! Letter campaign anyone???
We like this show, too, the networks need to give them a chance to get going, why start something and then dump it? It makes no sense watching a new show to have the network bums yank it. Too many shows have been getting canceled lately while reality tv shows rule the day–yuck.
Please don’t cancel. This show has such high suspense that we find we can only watch 1 show at a time that we DVR’d It reminds me a lot like 24 in the first few years. Kind of keeps you at the edge of your seat.
I loved this show and the cast. Please renew!
I love the show and all the players. Please renew!
I thought this was a great show, and absolutely should be renewed. While it was running I had made comments to a quite a few people about the show, how great it was, but no one had heard of it. It deserves at least a few more seasons. I agree with a previous comment – it will catch on.
I love it. renew it pls!
I was looking forward to the new show.
I watched the first episode, didn’t think it was great but gave it two more chances. Well I’ll not be watching it anymore.
Heigle is awful.
Subject is ok, just cannot watch her.
Keep ….need contrast
