You're right about Swingtown attracting 2.82 million viewers, a new low, on Friday nights. What was Swingtown attracting in the 18-49 demographic on Friday nights?

this is so stupid. CBS sucks. This show was great. Who puts a show on Friday night during the summer. really its like they were trying to make it fail. If they pulled their heads out of their butts and looked at the views the show got online when people could actually watch the show they would see it was more popular then tv ratings show. I know just myself I have watched the entire season online 4 times since the show has ended. Waiting and hoping that one day I will get some closer....

Damn! I just saw this about Swingtown being cancelled. We had just about given up on network tv--we are so sick of reality tv, the thought of it makes us nauseous. Swingtown was great; we were little kids in the 70s, but it was fun to take this look at how things were for a lot of adults and families back then. Things we didn't get to experience. The writing was great, the acting was fabulous, and we looked forward to it every week.

I'm with the rest of you that are hoping some other network will realize what a gem they really have in Swingtown and get it back on the air. Hell, even a cable network show would be great--and given the 'censorship' might even be preferable!

Uugghh! I just found this show- suggested to me by Netflix-and I LOVE it! Gee- maybe we'll have yet ANOTHER reality show instead. Who are these "TV executives"? There was no promotion for this show that I noticed- what do they expect?! They're really clueless.

Swingtown & Mad Men,, 2 of my favortie TV. Finally some quality Tv series/ I am so sick of reality TV.
Swingtown, was well written, and depicted what the 70"s were all about.
I can't believe they cancelled this, it is upsetting to see what this country watches and they cancel quality TV. Maybe if they had promoted more? It is surely not due to the writing or acting. Sorry to see it go, I am very disappointed...Maybe some other network will have the balls to air something of quailty!

This was a show unlike any other on TV and had a great group of actors! Normally it is hard to find anything new and exciting on TV during the summer, but not last summer and that was because of Swingtown. Hope someone finally comes to their senses and puts this shoe back on the air with some new epsiodes. Cable should jump at the chance! Just imagine how much more fun they could make it since they do not have to hold back as much. Come on HBO this can be your next big hit!!!

I'm so sad this show isn't coming back...I've waited all year long in hopes a new season would come and now nothing!!! What gives??? This was the bet show ever and had CBS promoted it better it would have been a hit. I found out about through word of mouth and after 1 episode I was hooked. CBS needs to stop running the same old tired shows and add some new flare to their station. Thanks for putting a damper on my summer CBS!!!

Lets keep all the shows with murder and hate and take off the shows that have love and compassion in them. I loved the show and hate that it is off. They should make a movie.

I am very disappointed to find that Swingtown is not coming back. I'm really going to miss what was one of the few really great adult shows on tv. I hope there is at least some wrap up. I want to know what happens next! RIP Swingtown - you will be missed!

CBS caused it to fail when it moved to Friday night...gee, Friday night during a summer run? does anyone watch anything on Friday night?
This was a well written, entertaining show, cast was fun, upbeat and it had a chance to gain the audience, but the big shots make decisions for us.

Wow, I'm hugely disappointed that Swingtown got canceled. CBS just got blocked on our TV. It was the one thing my wife and I genuinely enjoyed watching together and we looked forward to it. I guess a well written/acted, intelligent show isn't what CBS is looking for.

I LOVED Swingtown! It was a realistic and enjoyable show and I hate to see it go. As usual, the so-called moral majority wins again. I'm sick to death of reality TV and all the childish game shows that have taken over. Bring back Swingtown! It was one of the best things to come from CBS in a long time.

cancelling this show was ridiculous!!! if it wasnt for the bold and the beautiful and cold case, i would never watch this channel. even csi sucks bad now. they need to bring swingtown back. thats stupid to just leave a series hanging on the last show like that with no indication that it wasnt coming back on. we've been sitting around waiting on it and watching every week to come on. way to go cbs

I think that the people at cbs are stupid!!!!! They cancel a show like swingtown, and keep a show like Survivor. Come on enough is enough, you can only watch survivor so many times before you get tired of it. I won't even watch CBS any more, not like they really care!!!!!!! Swingtown was a very funny show and to leave it as a cliff hanger like it is coming back on, THAT IS JUST WRONG, CBS YOU SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really CBS, think about getting this show back into production asap, if that's even feasible now. I'm not kidding.

I am considering BOYCOTTING the network entirely (EVEN How I Met Your Mother, which I really like a lot) if this show isn't given another chance. I don't care if you keep it on broadcast or shift it to cable as originally intended. But no movies just to tie up story lines, and no more bs half seasons.

MotherF---. I cannot believe THIS show gets canceled and all those lame ass game/reality/dating shows continue on. This was a rare, intelligent, clever, cool, BELIEVABLE, sophisticated, not-too-melodramatic, slightly soapy night time drama, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than stupid Desperate Housewives and even stupider Grey's Anatomy, as well as most so-called prime time programming.

Booooooooo to CBS for not giving this excellent program a fighting chance to find a damn audience. Which it would have. I for one have no doubt. I told everyone how good it was, but now they'll never get to see it.

When are these f-sticks in network TV going to realize that with all the cable and satellite options people have now, not to mention video games and downloadable movies for crying out loud (not even getting into the shocking reality that people don't always put the rest of their lives on hold for a television show, no matter how good it is) that it takes time to catch on sometimes?

Another of my all time fave shows had a similar first season. Noooobody else I knew watched it. So unclear was the future of this show when it first went into production that the network only ordered a half season. It was sooooooo good that I actually assumed it would be canceled (because that's what networks do to groundbreaking shows) that I began taping it the third week it was on telly. I continued to do so FOR NINE YEARS. Any guesses? The network: Fox. The show: The X-Files. That's right. Take note whoever axed S-town. Even The X-Files, one of the best television shows ever created, did not catch on until the second season, and even then it was a bit of a slow burn.

This is the most disastrous first season cancellation since My So Called Life was killed prematurely and we all now how amazing that show was and how much canceling it was such a bonehead dick move.

I want to give a special shout out to the actress who PLAYED Trina. Cudos to you my young woman. Yours was the character I was most intrigued by and the story line I enjoyed the most. Your performances were consistently captivating and delicately and subtly nuanced. You are a gem and I hope you are proud of this achievment. I will miss you the most. Sniff.

it's a shame that CBS had to cancel this show! Just as you start getting into it-it's gone! It seems like this world is more obsessed with reality tv rather than original programming. too bad they couldn't run it on a cable channel. I loved this show, and it was nice to watch something during the summer other than re-runs

It is a shame that CBS has done this again, Jericho and now Swingtown. This show was just getting off the ground for many of its fans but instead of pacifying advocators you choose your precious ratings. In the summer really WHO is watching TV but adults that don't want to subscribe to high priced premium channels to pass the time. YOU GUYS SUCK!

What a shame. I realize most reading this article are fans of the program. I think it would get much better ratings on SHOCASE following Weeds or Californication. Hope one of them can pick it up. Loved the series.

Shame on you CBS - you had something really good for a change and never gave it a real chance. Why am I surprised when the only other show on CBS I follow is 60 Minutes - certainly won't invest my time in the primetime crap they have been dishing out for years.

I agree with the MANY other replies. With all of the other shows that have been going on for years, it was refreshing to have a new theme on television. Especially with all of the unimaginative reality shows out!! I loved the writing, the setting, the characters, and the insight of a different genre (for once). To bad the charaters didn't act like the trashy, stripper-like reality-show stars today, with plastic bodies and dried up vommit on their white trash clothes. Maybe then they could have had an abundance of unsupervised teenagers making their their ratings sky-rocket as well. Say good-bye to the seventies forever.

I loved this show I was young in the 70's don't really remember much but the decor this show gave me glimpse into what was going on. and i fell in love with all the characters. I always wanted house and to have the parties that grant shows character had. I sure hope that they will give the episodes to tie up the lose ends.

Once again, the TV audience is left hanging without a closure to a show I fell in love with (October Road comes to mind). I can't believe we won't get to see what happens with Susan and Roger. This is such a heart breaking blow to those of us who tuned in faithfully every week to see this exciting, wonderfully written show. It certainly makes me question whether I want to get attached to any new shows only to have me left hanging after one season. What a terrible move to cancel and a lack of loyalty to your viewers. This really sucks!!!!!!!!

I think CBS should have given it another season. I'd much rather see new shows rather than a bunch of repeats. This is a unique show and was well produced for its debut season. With time and feedback I know this show would have continued its growth.

I hope we see it come back on another network since CBS has now made their final decision. It initially was going to be on HBO, maybe being on cable where it can be less regulated would be better for us all.

Of course they cancelled the show- it was actually GOOD. Amongst all the other crap on TV, this was a show we enjoyed watching, and it wasn't typical like other shows- aka reality cheez, medical drama, or cop drama. I was hoping another channel would pick it up- HBO or Bravo or something, but I guess that won't be happening...hopefully in the future they can do a TV movie on it or something to give it a full wrap up...

Man, this is a shame, CBS was just getting back to having good shows again. Its going to be a real loss to see this one go. CBS needs to rethink this move. We need more shows like this. They remind us of better times, when things were not to stressful, it was a nice hr long escape.

I probably haven't watched CBS for the past 12 years.

Flipping through the channels one night I saw a promo for SWINGTOWN, I was hooked INSTANTLY. The music, the fashions, the interiors, the hairstyles.... it was wonderful.

I planned my week around it and I didn't miss an episode and if I did, I watched on CBS.com the following night. It was phenomenal!!

At least one of the writers HAD to have lived the story in "real life", there's no way in Hell the writers could pull this out of thin air.

The overall look, feel and quality of the show reminded me of the shows on CBS in the 60s and 70s when they were Number 1 (maybe 2). It's a shame that the execs from the 60s and 70s can't come out of retirement (or brought back from the dead) and slap CBS back into shape.

I just purchased the DVD on amazon.com (in another browser window), while I was writing this.... I'm looking to the future when I have Alzheimer's, so that I can watch the DVD again with fresh eyes and say "Boy, they sure don't make them like that anymore!"....

Cancellation? I could have understood if the "religious right" put pressure on CBS to cancel the show for displaying the eating of "pot brownies" or the popping of "Quaaludes" like they were tic-tacs or casually have more than two people having sex in the same room at the same time (and not with their spouse) or wife swapping or a key party or that gay sex was accepted.... but as far as I know I hadn't heard the "religious right" make any fuss (oh, wait, maybe they were too busy doing these things themselves and they didn't have time to watch).

Hey, CBS, here's a few ideas for some new quality programming:

The New Misadventures of the Old CBS
Without a Brain
Two and a Half Idiots

SOAPS:
The Old and the Pitiful
The Dumb and the Clueless

REALITY SHOWS:
How to Kill a Network
Execs Gone Wild!
The Amazing White Race

SPIN OFFS:
CSI: Chinatown, NY
CSI: Little Italy, NY
CSI: Boise
CSI: North Miami
CSI: Punxsutawney - Animal Addition
CSI: Chalk Line - Kindergarten Addition
Criminal Minds - Programming Addition
The Mentalist - Brainless Addition

A real shame CBS didn't stick with this one for at least another season. I sympathize with fellow boomers sick of mindless violence and crappy reality shows. No wonder most of us "adults" are devoting more time to DVDs and ever less to network TV.

As we recall there were a lot of lose ends to this show that had not been tied up. How do you just cancel a show such as Swingtown without slowly letting down its audience.
My wife and I fell " cut off at the legs " about this show. I didn't recall anyone ever saying anything negative about any of the episodes, and as for us... well, we couldn't get enough. I was born in the 70's and can recall so many of the props the show uses, along with the characters hair styles, cloths, and hideous choices of wallpaper for homes. This show really took me back. I mean as If that all weren't enough, Swingtown had one awesome cast lined up. I really don't know what CBS was thinking. I guess the show really never got a fair shot, but hey... it's CBS.

I miss Swingtown soooo much. I've never looked forward to a t.v. show in my entire life, but this one was enlightening. At the ending of every show I was squirming about the next episode, I couldn't wait. I was like a kid on Space Mountain at Disney every Friday night or Sat. (tivo) .
I was completely heartbroken when I found out it was over. They should have at least finished the season, reguardless, I feel it was a terrible move to cancel.

Please bring back Swingtown!!!!!!

This is a great show. Fun to watch. I looked forward to this show. Friday was a bad time slot for a show like this. It is an adult show that should have been put on at 10:00 pm on another week day. Great acting and writing.

Crying shame to see this cancelled. Interesting, well-written, with complex characters. CBS, you buried this on Friday night. What did you expect the ratings to do? A great show for babyboomers. Should have given it a better chance. No wonder cable is kicking your butt.

I got rid of my TV a few years back and have not regretted it. However, I will still occasionally check out shows that I've heard good things about via Netflix or BitTorrent. This show is pretty awesome so far, with a great soundtrack to boot. Seriously, WTF is CBS thinking? This seems to be just another nail in the coffin for network television. I don't understand why a show can't be on for at least a full season before being canceled, especially if the marketing for it stinks. You CBS execs are a bunch of idiots.

Grieving the death of another favorite pastime…

While many people wonder how someone could become so involved in the unfolding drama of fictional characters, I ask, how could you not?

Swingtown, the 70's set drama that was plump with nostalgia, captivating story lines, sublime acting and exquisite character development has been cancelled.

In the past CBS seems to have been willing to take a chance on several new series with fresh perspective and original ideas, yet time and again, at the first display of resistance or hurdle they cower and surrender faith.

Like so many series before it, CBS pulled the plug on what has and could continue blooming into greatness. I ask what would have happened if networks had cancelled all series that failed (at first) to live up to expectations? Seinfeld, (and ironically Melrose Place), where both extremely close to being cancelled after their first seasons, but they continued, and now appear on almost all “Greatest Television Shows of All Time” lists. The public should have been given more time to catch up to the insight this network had initially shown with this Swingtown project.

I am not a fan of the CSI franchise, and this definitely limits my options where CBS is concerned. What's next… CSI Chicago? I say this patronizingly, yet the comedy is it could happen.

CBS makes no apologies, but perhaps they should. I believe that they know there were many external factors that influenced viewer ratings, and it had nothing to do with the quality of this show.

I believe that because of CBS's actions the series seemed to be doomed to fail from its creation. With a lack of advertising and less that desired timeslot I'm amazed that the ratings began as strongly as they did.

Some might argue that the downfall was due to it being sent to summer scheduling (when most people are vacationing outside away from their televisions), but I enjoyed the parallel between its hot season and the actual temperature outside.
I think the problem stems mostly from a sudden switch in weekly scheduling (originally the show aired on Thursday nights but was moved to Friday). I was witness to only one, 10-second clip announcing the change…once it had already been made. If it hadn't been for my PVR I would not have known where it had gone.
Another way to quickly lose an audience is to, without notice, stray from sequential order. There seems to be nothing worse than being inconvenienced with a repeat only four episodes into a new series. Even an overly acted, completely formulized show like 90210 at least has the courtesy to advise their viewers of when they can expect a new episode at the end of each credit.

I've grown up as a voyeur to groundbreaking series that have pushed the envelope, especially in demonstrating sexuality – Sex and the City immediately comes to mind. That being said, I feel that there's no reason that Swingtown's modesty affected the series. I found the absence of delivery forced a coy visualization that can be just as effective. However, if resurrection or continuation would have depended on a shift to a more non-controlled cable group (such as Showtime) I'd be all for it.

I sit among the demographic that apparently wasn't watching Swingtown – yet my group of girlfriends, mother, in-laws and half of my office are self-pronounced addicts of this show.

I wonder if network executives (even the smaller ones) take the time to look beyond the Neilson ratings to count their audience.

Throughout December when researching whether Swingtown would be renewed (before the official announcement) I would scower the Internet for information. The amount of posts articulating concern for the shows future are staggering. Many sites claim a daily post (dating since November) of over 300, while columnists such as Tom Jicha writes “For a show with the low ratings Swingtown had, I've gotten an uncommon amount of correspondence about its future”. I even went as far as to listen to the interviews included in the DVD release to get a hint at its future…while Nina Tassler's (CBS Entertainment President) interview contained many past tense statements – with left me uneasy, the fact that the title of this boxed set was “The Complete First Season” instead of “The Complete Series” left me with a shred of hope for it's continuation.

This season was prominently displayed on many top ten lists of 2008 (People's Best of TV 2008 being one) and its re-runs are continually aired on Bravo. The pre-holiday release on DVD was a smart move and for these reasons alone, I'm astounded that CBS seemed to lack the common sense to realize that this new notoriety, airtime, and publicity would only benefit the ratings for the better, hence given this series a second chance.

It's unfortunate that networks such as CBS seemed to have, over the last ten years, developed a new way of creating excess broadcasting, only to pull the plug on all but a few that don't in their eyes measure up. It used to be that dedication was attached to the FEW shows they'd develop (full seasons of 20+ episodes filmed, as opposed to a disposal 13 half season). Nurturing a fan base, and their much beloved characters were important. Now it feels to me as though they dangle a promise of something great, then take it away.

Of all of the disappointment I feel none top the inconsideration CBS has shown to its faithful viewers. If mid-way CBS realized that Swingtown was not going to carry on for a second season why wouldn't they have shot a more tied up finale? The lives of Swingtown will now sit for eternity beside such unanswered questions as, “Did Keith Mars ever win the elusive job of Sheriff”? Or “Will Kevin Girardi regain the use of his legs while Joan tackles the Devil in Arcadia”?

So I appeal to CBS, and all the fans that disagree with the choice of cancelling this amazing show. I ask that CBS please re-consider and attempt to somehow make this right. I'm not sure if my voice will make one bit of difference, but I have to try, and I appeal that you do the same. Please write CBS…hopefully if anything it will help them be more aware of the voices that don't own a Neilson Ratings Box when making future decisions.

Throughout December when researching whether Swingtown would be renewed (before the official announcement) I would scower the Internet for information. The amount of posts articulating concern for the shows future are staggering. Many sites claim a daily post (dating since November) of over 300, while columnists such as Tom Jicha writes “For a show with the low ratings Swingtown had, I’ve gotten an uncommon amount of correspondence about its future”. I even went as far as to listen to the interviews included in the DVD release to get a hint at its future…while Nina Tassler’s (CBS Entertainment President) interview contained many past tense statements – with left me uneasy, the fact that the title of this boxed set was “The Complete First Season” instead of “The Complete Series” left me with a shred of hope for it’s continuation.

This season was prominently displayed on many top ten lists of 2008 (People’s Best of TV 2008 being one) and its re-runs are continually aired on Bravo. The pre-holiday release on DVD was a smart move and for these reasons alone, I’m astounded that CBS seemed to lack the common sense to realize that this new notoriety, airtime, and publicity would only benefit the ratings for the better, hence given this series a second chance.

It’s unfortunate that networks such as CBS seemed to have, over the last ten years, developed a new way of creating excess broadcasting, only to pull the plug on all but a few that don’t in their eyes measure up. It used to be that dedication was attached to the FEW shows they’d develop (full seasons of 20+ episodes filmed, as opposed to a disposal 13 half season). Nurturing a fan base, and their much beloved characters were important. Now it feels to me as though they dangle a promise of something great, then take it away.

Of all of the disappointment I feel none top the inconsideration CBS has shown to its faithful viewers. If mid-way CBS realized that Swingtown was not going to carry on for a second season why wouldn’t they have shot a more tied up finale? The lives of Swingtown will now sit for eternity beside such unanswered questions as, “Did Keith Mars ever win the elusive job of Sheriff”? Or “Will Kevin Girardi regain the use of his legs while Joan tackles the Devil in Arcadia”?

So I appeal to CBS, and all the fans that disagree with the choice of cancelling this amazing show. I ask that CBS please re-consider and attempt to somehow make this right. I’m not sure if my voice will make one bit of difference, but I have to try, and I appeal that you do the same. Please write CBS…hopefully if anything it will help them be more aware of the voices that don’t own a Neilson Ratings Box when making future decisions.

WHEN WILL THEY LEARN?

1. STOP putting on, moving, preempting, putting back on shows and expecting them to develop a following. WE DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO CHASE A SHOW WE LIKE.
PUT IT ON, LEAVE IT ON, AND GIVE IT A MINIMUM OF 10-13 UNINTERRUPTED WEEKS, OR DON'T BOTHER

2. give us a minimum of 26 brand new episodes EVER SINGLE YEAR. We don't like seeing 13 episodes 4 freakin' times before we get new ones, AND we don't like watching 13 episodes twice and then WAITING 6 FREAKIN MONTHS EITHER!

3. CONTINUE NOT GIVING US WHAT WE WANT & WE WILL CONTINUE TO DRIFT AWAY FROM YOU. You WANT our viewership? EARN our viewership.

My heart just broke as I looked to see when Swingtown was going to return and seen it had been canceled. I looked forward each week to watch it. Please CBS finish it out even with a movie ,although I would rather the series.

Just like everyone else, I was looking forward to season 2 of Swingtown. I fell in love with the characters of this show over the summer, and really wanted to see what was going to happen next after the finally. I truly believe that the execs at CBS are making a big mistake by cancelling this wonderfully unique and well made show.

And this would be why I don't watch much TV.

As has been stated before, the volume of recurring reality & crime dramas is both a sad indication of what the medium is feeding us and/or what is being demanded. Even shows, like Hero's, that were once provocative and unique can drastically lose focus and rating and still come back when a great show like this gets cancelled.

Make me kind of glad that I decided not to get one of those converter boxes.

Well, it figures. A fabulous show with interesting characters. Let's bury it in the summer, then on Friday night and blame low ratings on the writer's strike. If CBS really backed this show, it would bring it back for the fall season and give it a chance.

I'm very upset about this. Swingtown was one of the best shows to come to tv in a long while. Leave it to CBS to keep all of the crap and get rid of a good thing.
Maybe if they actually had promoted it, more people would have watched it.

I hate you CBS and all of your stupid crime dramas and reality shows. Swingtown was the first show I've watched on your network in quite a while. Never again will I watch a show on your network.

After seeing it was named on People's Best of TV 2008, I just finished watching the whole season. I LOVED it!! Smart, thought provoking and emotionally real. This decision is really disappointing and I agree with the opinion that CBS has shows with far more drain on their viewing schedule than this. Some of us just want good series that don't involve dead bodies, games or getting voted off the island.

I think Swingtown is a summer show and should stay that way...the issue is that it is not returning really disappoints the fans. I think there should be a rule..if a tv series gets cancelled, then there should be a finale episode to wrap everything up the right way. Oh well, I made my peace so at least I can wait for it to come to DVD soon.

To be honest I kind of thought this show would have made a better mini series than and actual full time version. I mean it was alright and the story was kind of interesting, especially the changes between all the character's lives. However I do feel that it wasn't going to last beyond the summer. I kind of thought it was an odd choice at the time I mean by the time fall came around the time to watch something like this would not had been huge for viewership. However I do think that perhaps a few more episode to wrap up the series may be a good idea.

What a waste, it was a bright spot in a usually boring summer TV season. Once again the major networks are getting rid of the intelligent shows in favor of reruns or mindless reality TV.

I REALLY was looking forward to the next season. What a bummer! I can think of 10 other shows on CBS that should have been cancelled long before now... Your viewing audience is dwindling...AT LEAST COME BACK with a few more episodes, if nothing else, AND TIE UP THE LOOSE ENDS YOU LEFT WITH THE FIRST SEASON.... We at least deserve that much.

This blowz! i just finished watching the rest of the show on netflix instant TONIGHT, only to discover via google that it was officially cancelled TODAY! Argh, whats the point of getting invested in new shows, only to be left high and dry with an unresolved cliff hanger?!? . . . at least hook me up with a low budget x-mas special that ties up all the loose ends, . . even a script in progress would do. . . It should have aired on FOX. . . too spicy for CBS to handle

What??? They cancelled Swingtown? I looked forward to that show every week and I was just searching the web to see if it was coming back for another season. I am soooo bummed! And CBS has the nerve to cancel it when 85% of their other shows suck...good job execs.
