In November 1991, Universal Studios released Cape Fear, a remake of the classic 1962 film of the same name. It’s a very intense movie and was helmed by acclaimed director Martin Scorsese.
The film was nominated for two Academy Awards and boasts an all-star cast that includes a very scary Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, and Juliette Lewis in a breakout role. The drama tells the tale of a convicted rapist who’s released from prison after serving a 14 year sentence. He comes to visit the family of the lawyer who’d defended him and has anything but gratitude on his mind.
Less than a year later, The Ben Stiller Show debuted on the FOX network. The pilot episode of the sketch comedy series features a Cape Fear movie parody. This time it’s a character from a classic monster sitcom that’s looking for revenge on the executive who cancelled his show.
The clever clip could be seen as a warning to network executives: Be careful which show you decide to cancel – the decision could come back to bite you! Stay tuned!
