I dont understand why it was cancelled, it seems sci fi or syfy whatever the hell it is made sure it was quiet, it really makes me mad and i refuse to watch sci fi or syfy anymore because of it the only good series on there station and they cancelled it. I love dresden files shows and books I hope Jim keeps writing ‘em.

It really is too bad this series was cancelled. Both my boyfriend and I really got into it and were hoping their was a 2nd season out there but obviously not. We just discovered the series on Netflix. I’m sure it would have gotten more ratings eventually if more people had known about the series.

This show is so creative! I found it on youtube and watched all 12 episodes in 2 nights. I really wish they would bring it back. While watching it I felt drawn in so much that I seemed to be a part of the show. It was a real joy to experience.

I just rented the dresden file series, and i really love it. I think it is one of the most well made produce tv series. It’s funny ,thrilling ,suspence and very entertaining.They should put it back again.

After i saw the series on tv i read all the books in the series in a year. Wish i could see more episodes. The way the films are directed lets me visualize the books that much better. Hope they will come back at some point.

I’ll try again. I’m an old Florida housewife. I stumbled upon The Dresden files. I did indeed fall in love. i searched everyday with my cable’s find-a-show thingy. for the Dresden files. A few shows popped up here and there. i taped a snippet just to get Dresden’s outfit. I wanted it for a halloween costume.
studio – have you no eyes; have you no ears; have you no heart? This show was such a feast of visionary splendor, of inordinate wit, of of of…. you fools. You stopped a classic for the ages. I miss it and I hate you.

Dresden Files is a sophisticated show that appealed to all ages. It was a show special enough to get me out of bed at 3 AM to watch the two hour Storm Front showing, it was special enough to inspire me to write on blogs, websites, various TV executives to protest its cancellation.
I have not ever felt the need to do that for any other show – ever. It made its way into my heart and I believe that its cancellation is one of the most egregious mistakes that the SciFi channel is probably already regretting.

The Sci-Fi channel started out so well. Those of us who are
sci-fi/fantesy fans finally had a channel that catered to our taste in series and movies. Unfortunatley they changed. In 2007 they had a hit on their hands in The Dresden Files series. It even beat their flagship series, Battlestar Galactica. Even though The Dresden Files was only on for twelve weeks it quickly built a fan base. Even when they changed the time it aired we found it and continued to watch.

It is rare these days to find a series that combines supurb acting, imaginative scripts and good plots. Here at last was a hero everyone could identify with. Harry Dresden is a wizard/private detective trying to make ends meet. He only uses his powers as a wizard as a last resort, prefering instead to use logic and intellect to solve a problem or mystery. He draws on the vast experience of Bob, the ghost, to find solutions. Paul Blackthorn, Dresden, and Tarrence Mann, Bob, are excellent together. Watching them work together is a real treat.

Valerie Cruz does a wonderful job as Lt. Murphy, a hard-working police officer who has enough trouble dealing with the world she knows. She has reluctantly been drawn into the world of magic, wizards and demons. Paul Blackthorne and Valerie Cruz seem to effortlessly portray the ambivilance between the two characters.

It is easy to become enthralled in the stories and put day-to-day concerns aside while watching The Dresden Files. The producers and directors at Lionsgate have sucessfully blended mystery and magic.

This is a program that the entire family can sit down together and enjoy. It is a shame that the Sci-Fi channel didn’t renew the series. It was short-sighted of them. In this era of “reality” shows and series that rely on sex and violence to support weak plots, The Dresden Files was a refreshing change. There is no telling how far the series would have gone if there had been adequate advertising and more episodes.

It isn’t too late. The fan base still exists and we are still working to get the series back. We watch the series on Hulu.com every Saturday and discuss it on the Sci-Fi channel forum, come join us and discover what you have been missing.

The Dresden Files is one of those rare series that manages to be an excellent combination of all the best aspects of television entertainment: interesting, unique, and expertly-written stories, quality acting, original plots & storylines, and a imaginative and captivating premise!

Harry Dresden is the perfect example of a hero of today – someone who tries their best to do what’s right and to help others – regardless of his own well-being or how difficult that may be. As an added bonus, Lt. Murphy is a leading lady with strength, courage, and skill, and who is excellent in an extremely difficult and dangerous job – Plus, unlike MOST TV leading ladies, she does it all with compassion, reasonable morals, and WITHOUT being a total shrew! These are the examples we NEED!

The Dresden Files is loved by thousands (over 13,700 folks have signed the petition) and NBC has even admitted to Dresden having a ‘cult following’, so there really is no logical reason for the show to have not continued. Sci-Fi claims they want more female viewers – Dresden has them in DROVES. Sci-Fi’s slogan is “What If” – this series is perfect for asking & answering that question every week!

So why hasn’t it been renewed??

Because canceling the Dresden Files was yet another illogical, ill-informed step taken by the Sci-Fi Channel in their effort to ‘mainstream’ the channel OUT of it’s original purpose. They’ve even stated in published articles that they’re considering renaming the Channel! Seriously, just how many USA Channels do they think can survive, much less prosper??!

Canceling a successful, beloved, quality, scifi/fantasy series such as the Dresden Files is yet another illogical, unintelligent, self-destructive step in alienating what’s left of their fan base and viewership. How many viewers do they think they’ll have once they’ve ‘mainstreamed’ the programming and filled it with ‘reality’ TV & wrestling – they’ll be splitting their viewship with the USA Channel!

Sci-Fi Channel needs to fill the void it has left through it’s own actions of removing scifi/fantasy from the Channel: It needs to quit making low-budget, poorly written, made for Sci-Fi movies that make it hard to take the Channel seriously; It needs to air QUALITY science fiction/fantasy series; It needs to regain the trust of its viewers/fan base; It needs to put the Sci-Fi BACK INTO the Sci-Fi Channel. It can start by renewing the perfect example: the Dresden Files!!!

Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean you should gloat or be glad that people who enjoyed it lost something that they took pleasure in. That’s pointlessly cruel. You claim to be a fan of the books but you’re glad Jim Butcher is no longer getting money from the series now that there aren’t any new episodes?

Scifi made a huge mistake and this show is now a cult classic. It’s too bad no one is brave enough or tough enough to try to rectify the loss of this show…

The Dresden Files was a fantastic show with a brilliant cast. I simply adored Terrence Mann’s portrayal of the snarky yet tragic ghost, Bob AKA Hrothbert of Bainbridge. This was an incredible show. Why were there only twelve episodes? It had so much potential. Canceling this after only twelve episodes is as much a sin as it would have been if WB (now CW) had canceled Buffy The Vampire Slayer after it’s first season. The show and it’s story lines were only just beginning to unfold. Sure this was a different universe from the original novels that it was based on but that is what made it exciting and enticing. The stories were fresh and new and you did not know what was going to happen next. And many of us fans of the original novels were actually pleased about Bob’s transformation from the two dimensional talking skull comic relief of the books to the intelligent and cleverly crafted ghost character portrayed by a great Broadway icon for the show.

Instead of telling the truth the Scifi Channel allowed people to believe that Paul Blackthorne (Harry Dresden) had left the show and that’s why it was canceled even though Paul Blackthorne only found new work when the announcement of if the Dresden Files would continue or not was delayed by three months. They never corrected rumors of low ratings even though The Dresden Files ratings were really very close to those of the flagship show, Battlestar Galactica. Right now on an amazon poll for the Scifi channel store has a poll in which The Dresden files is in the far lead as the number 1 spot for best show on the Scifi Channel. Someone even “misinformed” Variety magazine that The Dresden Files was the Scifi Channel’s biggest commercial failure. They seemed to conveniently forget about Pain Killer Jane and Trash… I mean Flash Gordan. That statement in Variety magazine earned that particular article more negative online comments than any other article published by Variety that year. The DVD sales for The Dresden Files are still going great. Robert Wolfe (one of the main forces behind the show) had great plans to develope the Hrothbert of Bainbridge / Winifred story line in season 2 and many fans were very eager to see this unfold. The Dresden Files message board on the Scifi Channel official website is STILL more active than many other discussion forum on that site.

Right now there’s a huge trend of wizard based TV shows such as Wizard’s of Waverly Place on The Disney Channel, the new show, Wizard’s first rule, and on BBC (soon NBC) Merlin.

So why is there no season two of The Dresden Files? Who was foolish enough to discontinue this show just as the seventh Harry Potter book was hitting store shelves and wizard fever was at it’s zenith? There were so many mysteries of unfolding plots not yet resolved. How did ending this show make sense at all? Why do they bring back the likes of Scare Tactics but not The Dresden Files?

The Dresden Files was the first truly great fantasy creation of The Scifi Channel. Thanks to the appearance of Doctor Who (thought somewhat cut down for commercials) and The Dresden Files I had thought The SciFi Channel was improving but with the loss of The Dresden Files I have again lost faith…

why you guys haded to cancelled the best show ever? this was a terrific show i seen, in other comments other people like this show, not like this show but love this show, but you guys haded to shut it down. the series was just getting started and interesting as well.you guys might not have very good ratings because not people have cable or sattelit dish for seeing this show. why not show it on air just like the CW does….etc… i REALLY love this show………….

this was the best show sci fi had ever ha. why did u guys have to end it. Me and my entire family loved this show and now it is cancelled and that ticks me off. I think sci fi is really stupid for doing this and its not like they had alot better shows on even their movies are horrible, just with the graphics.
You guys have to bring this show back just to finish it and i thought it was a great show.

Good riddance , This should was a dull and poorly written waste of your lives 1 hour at a time. The characters where shallow and contrived at the very best and the plot being not 100% like everything else on tv still seemed stale and recycled, the whole super natural cop show became a tired theme after the first show to use that idea was canceled many many years ago .

SciFi sucks. They did the same thing to Firefly and they’ve gone and royally messed this up too. I don’t know how many viewers watch those awful recycled movies with their recycled monsters and recycled story lines and recycled lines, but I’ll guarantee that reruns of Dresden would beat them. Flash and Dr. Who are awful. And now wrestling? I can say that I haven’t watched SciFi since the first 2 Flashes which look and sound like they’re filmed by a high school AV class. I refuse to buy the DVD for fear SciFi reap any of the profits.

My friend gave me the books and told me about the TV show. I loved the books but I was a little skeptical because I heard it was much different from the books.

And then I watched it.

I must say, I fell in love, died, and went to heaven to live with Bob!

And now it’s cancelled. I just show up late for everything, seriously. Oh well…perhaps a petition might get them moving. I’m going to go look for it.

Wow, what is the SciFi Channel doing? “The Dresden Files” was a great show. I liked everything about it. Sometimes it does take a while for shows with substance (“Farscape”) to catch on while others are an instant hit (“Battle Star Galactica”), but they are still shows that are well beyond the poorly produced “Pain Killer Jane”, “Flash Gordon”, and any of those orginal SciFi Saturday movies. I hope they another network realizes how good Harry Dresden could be to their network and decide to give them a chance. As for me, this channel is becoming one of my least favorite to watch, and I am sure that I am not the only one who feels the same way. Get it right SciFi before you start killing your fan base.

I loved the intro music, the writing, the chemistry between the actors, the sets… The Dresden Files was one of the few shows I watched, and I watched it on iTunes. I don’t even own a TV. But from the very first episode that show had me hooked. The execs at SciFi must be on crack. They trashed a show that had legendary cult potential… bigger than Star Trek. Cuz one of these days, the little folks are going to Graduate from Hogswarts. You Dig?

Oh, this takes the cake! What? Dresden files not to return? Sci fi has gone Sci Crazy. We (adults) finally had a show on this channel that was worth watching and didn’t seem as though it was a low budget production and they cancel? Who comes up with this mess? They really should survey the fans to see if we want to continue or even if there’s enough of a fan base to continue, providing us with the permanent day and time of the shows airing. This takes me back to when they cancelled The Burning Zone. Someone needs to be fired.

Fans are STILL fighting for the return of the Dresden Files! We held a ‘virtual sit-in’ on 11/16 to celebrate the airing of the first repeat of the series since the end of Season 1 and will be doing so each Friday and during each repeat airing. Is this where I post about how very much I enjoy the ECW and Flash Gordon? Really? Oh, oh uh yeah sorry. Duh!! Sci Fi had a great thing going with Dresdan Files and they decided that they would go with programming that was far less entertaining and desirable. (honestly does ECW belong on the Sci Fi channel?) I watched the show faithfully every week and eagerly awaited each new episode. Just as other viewers I kind of figured Harry would be back when Eureka went on sabbatical but alas!! it was not to be. Instead the programmers took Harry to a back room and apparently locked him in an enchanted closet with Bob never to be seen by our mortal eyes again! And, just as other viewers I have decided to boycott the Sci Fi channel!!!! I haven’t watched anything there since, including Battlestar. I mean, who cares anyway? Dresdan was my draw, I saw my advertisements for other shows of interest during Dresdan Files and now that I don’t have them anymore I have no idea what’s going on nor care. What a shame! (aside to the programmer–do you read any of these posts by the faithful followers of the popular programs you air? Do you care that our advertising dollars are no longer yours to direct? Do you care that perhaps your viewership has fallen because of lack of exposure over disappointment in what you choose to air? This is money in your pockets boys and in this economy you really can’t afford a gigantic tear like the one you’ve created here!)

Im in Australia and have seen all the Dresden episodes, infact most of my Mates have seen them as well. Only thru the Net have i even been able to get a sneak peak into shows that i consider great yet don’t get a full season and thus do not make it over to our sunny shores.

I feel ripped that this was the only 1/2 season that Dresden files got, Having some rewrapped and fresh story arcs was great and i was sure that the writers were improving with every show they got out onto the airwaves.. In short someone please pick this show up, with a few tweaks it could easily get a nice 4-5 season run.

Needless to say, I am sad to see another good show get scrapped.
I’ve read elsewhere that location was an issue with the show…getting out of Toronto, trying to get into Edmonton?!? Maybe they should have tried Vancouver..but we will never know.
As with most shows, the folks that matter as to it’s future, can’t or won’t give the show enough development. If a show has a solid 1st yr, then it’s only seems logical to see the characters develop and build through a second season. If a show dies in the first five episodes, fine, let it go, but give the good ones a shot. I could lambaste the times a network has chosen junk to fill our perceived visual voids. Add that to the rule that Networks don’t like sci-fi shows & you get the typical treatment of sci-fi fans.
Funniest part of this rant: I had never seen the show on TV. I never heard of The Dresden Files until my local Movie retailer started renting it!! The show was only available in legal US markets & on Canadian Grey Market Satellite viewers.
Another chance to add to the viewer base, yet typical Big Business prevails; not much creativity and very little style. Network executives appear to ONLY consider the quick profits! For the Sci-Fi network, ‘TDF’ is exactly as with our own CBC is to the hit series ‘Intelligence’. A hit because viewers will watch it. CBC has an awesome show, but couldn’t be bothered to advertise it or promote it. It thrives despite an apparent lackluster effort to market or promote. At least it airs in sequence, but that’s about it.
The Dresden Files deserved better, the fans deserved so much more!

I’m pissed!!! First Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Now The Dresden Files. This was a really great show. I was so looking forward to the second season. There aren’t a lot of good shows on TV and when they are you can’t get too excited because as soon as you do, they’re gone. What’s the point. I’m done. I guess it’s time to get away from the tv spend more time reading.

I have only watched the first 3 episodes of dresden files and now that it’s cancelled i’m not sure if i will watch the rest of the season (despite the fact that I was really get into it). This is only because, every time i get into a series it seems to be cancelled (e.g firefly, prime example of a great show that had a huge potential to be a cult favorite)…not to mention the fact that what is even classified as sci-fi anymore? LOST? is sci-fi? but then again maybe i don’t even count this as “traditional” sci-fi (just as i don’t count Jericho as “traditional sci-fi) something is better than nothing?…..oooh we could always watch “heroes’ that’s a great “sci-fi” show!! (sarcastic) Bring back real sci-fi….down with pretentious hollywood, ratings driven, must make money within first 3 episodes cause we spent so much money advertising crappy new show with no real plot, got to dumb it down for the simpletons, let’s hope everyone get’s into it cause god-forbid we only have a cult following of a few hundred thousand ppl (yeah that wouldn’t make be a great money making venture “cough, cough” star trek anyone?)… so stop canceling shows even if they don’t make it the first season cause you don’t know what gem you may be sitting on!!!

while I am disappointed about dresden files being cancelled and I agree scifi channel is way too quick in pulling the plug on shows, lets be real people. wrestling, while not scifi, brings in a decent following so its a smart investment for the channel. I like flash, not the greatest but watchable and the same for painkiller jane. its too bad the execs like to sink money into crap movies they show every saturday and so on, but cancelling dresden and other shows has nothing to do with them showing wrestling

We just found out! I’m heartbroken. We thought that when Eureka (not biting enough but fun) was over that Dresden (which I liked way more) would return. When I went to look up when it would be back on I found it was gone. I don’t think I’ll like “Harry” as a CEO in his new show. This is horrible. I got my 55-yr old aunt hooked on SciFi, and my baby boomer parents and mainstream brother and people who think SciFi is only for geeky men. Don’t they want a bigger, more diverse audience? I don’t watch SciFi for wrestling and the rest of their programming leaves a lot to be desired except for Battlestar and that only has one more season. So much for being a loyal fan. And so what if 30+ year old women liked it? It’s the only show in years my husband and his video game friends even tuned in for regularly. They almost never watch TV, and never weekly, but they watched that show and we’ve been so excited for the second season.

I’ve watched the Sci-Fi channel since they came on the air in 1992, but every time they get a show that I actually enjoy they cancel it. The Invisible Man, Farscape, Stargate, and now Dresden Files (just to name a few). Since USA networks bought Sci-Fi they’ve straight down the toilet.

Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Atlantis, Doctor Who, Eureka and (before cancellation) The Dresden Files. What did all these shows have in common? These were shows I would escape to from a long day of work and also a long week of endless stupid “Reality” tv that was being shoved down my throat. After a long day at the office “reality” is the last thing I’m looking for. So when I saw that SCFI had cancelled Dresden Files, my avenue of escape got that much smaller. That show had so much potential it was scary. If the SCIFI execs want to compete with the big dogs of the network biz they need to invest in more quality series and less into stuff like “Mansquito” (give me a break).

My husband and I were married 10 years ago. At that time the only channel that we watched was the scifi channel. Now all it seems to be is reruns of reruns with hours of them too boot! We have a TIVO and we always make sure it changes the channel so we don’t end up watching the wrestling. The dresden files brought us back to the channel… and with him we are gone.

I just found out today that the series was cancelled. How sad! I really enjoyed, the shows I saw, went out and bought all the books and both my son and I read them in quick succession. I just bought the DVDs the other day and started watching them which led me to look for when the show was scheduled to return, which led to me finding this site. I echo the comments of many of the other people here – SciFi Channel and wrestling? Yeah, they both deal with things that aren’t real, but at least SciFi is believable! Put that $^!% back on USA channel and bring SciFi channel back to what it could and should be.

I discovered the Dresden Files accidentally while flipping around one night. Loved it! Then couldn’t find it again. Now I know what happened. Ihave read most of the books now – really great! And just bought the DVDs for the first season so I could see the rest of the shows. Maybe it will get picked up in reruns….

Sci-Fi channel good thing I don’t pay for a channel who doesn’t listen to their viewers opinon. Looks to me paying for that channel means you will have to look at what THEY want you to see. How about making a statement and leave the Sci-Fi channel as a protest. How can they survive without viewers, right ?!

As always when something worth watching comes on, the Network Execs make a decision that is short sighted after they promote the show with little interest.
The effort should be made to show SciFi that the show has a following that wishes the show to return. After all, remember Star Trek?
I found the Dresden Files to be witty and have good writing and plots. I will check out the books. If a network type reads this, I am in the Information Technology Field, a former Soldier and an avid reader of Science Fiction. You have taken the Dresden Files off because of Flash Gordon or Wrestling? Please two pathetic shows that do not belong on a SciFi channel. Gee, thanks a lot.

I am really surprised of this. Each episode just kept getting better. I was so enjoying it I picked up the books. Talk about WOW, there is so much the Sci-Fi channel could have done, just shows how narrow minded (or lets say limited)they are. I guess that is why other channels have better Sci-Fi shows out this year…. I sent them a letter about it, for what it was worth…..

Seems that shows requiring something more than the intelligence and attention span of a 12 year old is being cut. Sad really Scifi has moved from a niche station to mainstream which means it is now constrained by the masses. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as long as they don’t dump *everything* that requires some kind creativity. I’m sure it will be replaced by female mud wrestling aliens in spandex.

On the plus side I am starting to watch more BBC America. Looking forward to Torchwood and more Dr. Who.

I don’t understand. I’m with everyone else here wondering why good shows are cancelled by networks. What does NBC think is gonna happen??? Do they expect that an obscure show on one of their spin-off networks is going to attract 100 million viewers?!?!?!
That’s why shows like this end up on the Sci-Fi channel, because they’re off the beaten path, so to speak. That’s why they should have put ‘Surface’ on Sci-Fi…probably would have been easier for the ‘regulars’ to appreciate it. But…I digress.
90% of the shows I watch are on Sci-Fi, which should be the PERFECT place for a show like the Dresden Files. It’s a sad sad state of affairs…all we’ll have left soon is ‘reality’ TV, which sucks.

What a shame- a TV show that actually sparked an interest in reading killed before it had a chance to flourish. Although, after reading the fourth book now, I believe the show could actually be made BETTER if they gave it a second shot and actually followed the story line from the books! I wish the best of luck for Mr. Blackthorne- he was a great fit for the role of Harry. It’s hard to believe that crap like “the Sarah Silverman show” gets a second season and something like “Caveman” gets to debut but not a return of Dresden? ***** bells!

What a shame. I just saw the series on DVD. I’m not a TV watcher — I prefer to do hobbies — but this was actually good. It kept me in my seat and wanting to see more. I loved the witty banter between Bob and Harry. I was really looking forward to a second season, and now I find they’ve cancelled it.

I agree that this show would have probably gained a bigger audience the 2nd season. I think it’s riciculous that the Sci-Fi channel continues to pour money (or perhaps they don’t) into their HORRIBLE saturday night Giant bug movies but that won’t promote decent shows. No wonder the world at large thinks so low of sci-fi if they get there ideas from this channel. BBC america has better scifi programming!
