Bones has been a quiet hit for FOX but the same can’t be said for its spin-off, The Finder. FOX has now cancelled the low-rated series after one season.
The Finder is a procedural series that revolves around a man (Geoff Stults) with the extraordinary ability to help people find the unfindable. Other castmembers include Maddie Hasson, Mercedes Masohn, and Michael Clarke Duncan.
The spin-off debuted on January 12th to a disappointing 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.50 million total viewers. It was fourth in its Thursday night timeslot right out of the gate and lost nearly 30% of the all-important demo from its compatible lead-in, Bones. This was not a good start.

Things picked up a bit in the following weeks, thanks in large part to the show having FOX’s blockbuster American Idol as a lead-in. Still, the numbers weren’t as high as they should have been.
After seven weeks on the air, FOX put Finder on hiatus and then moved it to Friday nights, giving its Thursday timeslot to Touch. If The Finder could maintain a healthy percentage of its viewers after the switch, it would likely garner a renewal.
But that didn’t happen and Finder’s numbers dropped like a rock. In its first Friday airing, the freshman series attracted a 1.1 demo rating — an episode-to-episode loss of 53% — with just 4.03 million viewers. The numbers for future episodes fluctuated a bit but didn’t really get any more encouraging. The network could do just as well or better by running cheaper reality programming.
The season finale of The Finder is set to air this Friday night and there won’t be any episodes after that. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall early enough and won’t leave viewers hanging with any major unresolved storylines.
What do you think? What went wrong with this show? Why do you think The Finder failed to attract a bigger audience? Was cancelling the series the right decision? How would you have fixed it?
Mixed feelings on this show..I basically watched it hopeing it would get better. That side story with the blond gypsy girl was dumb, how many times do they need to mention that he’s a blood hound and will run himself to death to find something…every freakn episode it seems, big mike saved that show and with him gone bringing in another big black guy would just seem wrong and wouldn’t fit. So saving the show is out. It was another fox flop so deal with it people.
To each his own… You were probably more interested in “Vampire Diaries” and couldn’t realize the greatness and charisma this show had…
Truly disappointed that they are canceling the show. I was so looking forward to the next season. Love all the characters may Michael Clarke Duncan RIP. I agree they need to take off those others show with the quickness!!!!!! Lontier
I am in the UK and still watching The Finder for the first time. We sky plus everything in our house and think that viewing figures are not at all accurate unless the boxes on which household’s viewing habits are recorded are all in houses where the inhabitants all watch reality tv, soaps and general rubbish, ignoring the great writing talent, fantastic acting and beautifully shot shows such as The Finder and many other shows that we have loved, which have been cancelled after one season such as the totally brilliant Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip for repetitive shows… Read more »
The finder is an awesome series & I was looking forward to the prospect of another series!! It should not be cancelled!!
This was a great show. I would have developed and was always fun (remeber that word concept used to be part of TV programs) to watch.
So disappointed to hear that The Finder, and Alcatraz were cancelled. Once again another dumb comedy or an equally boring reality show hits the air-ways. I believe that we are fast losing good writers, and are becoming saddled with the bottom of the entertainment barrel.
I agree bc I hate reality shows…The Finder was a great new show. Those of you who are old enough it was alot like Simon and Simon, Rip Tide, Magnum..but those were the best years for TV
Amazing show, it was awesome. I can’t believe Touch is still on, its really bad TV.
Why I Love.the finder and now you went and mess it all up
I’ll never watch Fox again. =\
The Finder was one of my favorite shows. Different, fun, interesting. New types of shows may take time to develop a following, but remember “Mash”? It got low ratings its’ first year, then became a huge, long running success! Same with “Northern Exposure”. The short-sighted, “immediate profit motivated” executives who canceled “The Finder” should learn a little history about what makes long term success. Not another fricking “reality” show! Those executives should be “canceled” for not doing their job!
The finder was a fun show to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed all the characters. Cancelling it is just ridiculous. Too many shows go by the wayside without being given a chance to prove themselves. The death of Michael Clarke Duncan is a great tragedy, and they should continue for another season in his honor and see how it goes.
The finder was a great show, a good clean show. you should bring the show back and write in the death of Micheal Clarke Duncan. He will be missed but the show should go on. Thank you God Bless
We’ll I’m a little slow because it never occurred to me that such a wonderfully written and acted show could be cancelled. I was checking the website to find out when the season premiere would be and I was shocked. I am sad and disappointed. Combined with the poor treatment of my other favorite show, So You Think You Can Dance, all I can say has FOX has really messed up this year.
I’m also among those who are disappointed that The Finder has been cancelled. Like they previously said, it was a very family friendly show and there aren’t enough of these kind of shows out there any more. It seems the more immoral a show is, the more popular it is. That doesn’t say much for the morals of this country and everyone wonders what is happening to our children and the off color choices they make. The Finder was a good and entertaining show. Too bad you have such lousy taste!
Fox has a very bad habit of canceling my favorite shows. the was nothing wrong with “The Finder” or “The Good Guys”or “The X Files” or “House”. I Guess good shows are hard to find. There are way to many reality shows and not enough good ones. I wish FOX would have given “The Finder” another chance. I only hope that “Bones” gets to stick around a while. At least I still have “Grimm” on that other station.
