To very little surprise, the CW has cancelled one of its few remaining sitcoms, The Game. Is this the end for the series or could it still return?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of Akil’s long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Hosea Chanchez and Wendy Raquel Robinson.
The first sitcom to debut on the CW network, The Game averaged 2.3 million viewers in season one. For season two, the ratings dropped to 2.07 million and a .96 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This season, it’s fallen to an average of 1.68 million viewers and a tiny 0.7 rating in the demo, in part because it was given a Friday night timeslot.
The CW is essentially getting out of the sitcom business and has cancelled The Game after 64 episodes. There had been talks about changing the show’s format to an hour-long dramady, to make it more compatible with the network’s other programming. That was seen as a long-shot at best and actually would have created its own set of challenges for syndication.
Though The Game only has 64 episodes, BET recently signed a syndication deal to air the first two seasons and season three will be added this Fall. To increase the show’s number of episodes, there have been discussions between the cable channel and CBS (the show’s studio) about co-funding original episodes. The deal would likely come with some cost-cutting measures.
There’s been no further word on the potential deal with BET so, as of right now, “The Wedding Episode” is the series’ last.

I dont like how the CW cancelled the show just as soon as Melanie and Derwin getting married and Janay being in labor. The show should be brought back. The Game should be an hour long show. Now all the viewers will have to always wonder what would’ve happened. Will Janay and Melanie get along for the sake of Derwin and the baby? What about the fight between Kelly and Tasha? I dont think CW knows what they did or lost when they cancelled the show.

I loved the show..it was a taste of real life and fantasy. Yes we wanted them to get married..but we wanted to see more of the show..besides we need more of our african faces on the network. The show should go on..why would you guys end it like that?? You all did an great job with the cast and scrip thus far but we want more..more ..and more..like the cosbys!lol

I am very disappointed, because i have been waiting to see the new series. something should be done for it to come back, put it on another channel. I was really looking forward to it coming back.

I been trying to find out for the longest about which episode was the last one from season three.I have been waiting so long for the next season and to find out there is not going to be one really hurts I am a big fan me and my girls still watch the reruns on bet i can’t belive that they are canceling the show it was the best black sitcom ever to me and the best on tv period i love the whole cast they are all so funny .i really hope they put it back on its still so much for us to find out,like how we know if the baby is really derwin’s and will melanie have a baby,and what about tasha and rick will they get married and is kelly and jason going to get back together and what is little brit brit doing now,is malik going to be with a big girl or what .plz plz plz plz don’t end it here its just gettin better and better why would they take it off,and of course they would put it on,on friday’s when everybody tryin to kick it ,so what can we do as fans to keep the show going….biggest fan
I am glad that Derwin & Melanie had their happy ending. Yes, I wanted to see them get married. I had heard that the CW may cancel the show. CW should bring this show back and keep it running. Now a days, good quality shows get cancelled for reality tv or other sex-filled, boyfriend sharing drama. Someone, please bring this show back! I really enjoyed all of the characters and story lines.
