The Good Guys: New FOX TV Show; Cancel or Keep It?

The Good GuysLast week, FOX gave viewers a sneak preview of one of their new series — The Good Guys. The TV show is set for a summer run and already has a spot on the network’s fall schedule. Will it last that long?

The Good Guys is an action comedy that pairs a washed-up, old-school cop (Bradley Whitford) with a young, by-the-book detective (Colin Hanks). Others in the series include Jenny Wade, Diana-Maria Riva, Jennifer Besser, Kimberly Lynn Campbell, Kennith Edwards, Nathan Fane, and Arthur Wooldridge.

Last Wednesday’s premiere attracted a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.93 million viewers. That put the TV show’s debut in fourth place in total viewership and tied for third in the coveted demographic with NBC’s Minute to Win It.

What do you think of The Good Guys?

That’s hardly a great start and doesn’t bode well for the series’ future. Ratings typically drop lower for a show’s second episode and Good Guys doesn’t exactly have any to spare.

The network isn’t giving up though and has scheduled extra chances to see the pilot by re-airing it this Friday (May 28th) and again on Monday, May 31st. The Good Guys’ regular season will then begin on Monday, June 7th.

TV show supportBased on the early ratings, one could expect that the series would have a quiet summer run and then be gone. However, FOX had such faith in the series that they gave it a spot on the fall schedule, following Human Target on Friday nights.

Ratings expectations are lower for summers and Friday nights. However, it seems highly unlikely that, unless viewership improves, the show will last beyond the first season.

What do you think? Is The Good Guys worth watching or would you just cancel it now?

There are so many reality shows and programs hardly fit for adults, let alone families. It was such a treat to finally see a show worth watching. It’s funny and something families can enjoy together. It seems that the only requirement for most networks is that the show is trash from start to finish. There’s enough of sex-themed shows every time you turn on your TV or computer. Are the writers bone dry on ideas that those shows are the only ideas they can come up with? What happened to creativity, morals and decent entertainment? It doesn’t take a genius to have have-wit actors and actresses use foul language or show skin. There are many options for good, entertaining shows and this is one of them. Also, pitting a new show on a prime night against a #1 show like “two and a half men” is a potential failure waiting to happen. Give the show the chance it deserves and I hope your writers will create many more shows with the character and ingenuity that this one possesses.

This is one of the funniest shows that TV has offered in a long, long time (besides “Chuck”). Hopefully Fox is smart enough to keep it. It’s great to watch something that makes me laugh out loud….

We both loved it! We search for re-runs of it, but no luck. We very much hope it will return in the fall.

I think “Good Guys” is the best and funniest show to be on prime time tv in a very long time. There was one episode Sylvio’s Way that i thought was a satire on no less then 3 previously released shows A.) Goodfellas, B.) Sopranos , C.) Pulp Fiction. Hell, they even were playing the song Layla at one point in the Good Guys very remisicent to Goodfellas in a satiracle way.

Very funny show. I hope it makes it.

My husband and I enjoy the Good Guys – especially Coliln Hanks. However, Bradley’s character is way over the top. He is abnoxious. His character needs to be toned down.

I think it’s a great show even though it’s a little unrealsitic as to the professional behavior of a police detective played by Bradley Whitford.
I don’t think he could get away with his antics and attitude in real life but this is a TV show and aren’t they supposed to be entertaining?
Don’t cancel it, I enjoy it a great deal!
