The New Normal: To Be Cancelled or Renewed for Season Two?

New Normal series finaleTonight, The New Normal finishes its season on NBC with the marriage of Bryan and David, as well as the birth of their son via surrogate Goldie. Will the sitcom be cancelled or will it be back for a second season so viewers can see how this family continues to develop?

The New Normal, as you’ve probably heard, revolves around a pair of gay men (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells) who want to start a family. They hire a surrogate (Georgia King) who helps them fulfill their dream, while they help her realize her own. The sitcom also stars Ellen Barkin, NeNe Leakes, Bebe Wood, and Jayson Blair.

With strong lead-in support from The Voice, The New Normal debuted on September 10th to a 2.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.88 million. The pilot had already been released online so that may have tempered television viewership for the debut.

The following night, NBC aired the second episode and the ratings held steady. Considering the state of the rest of NBC’s sitcoms, a 2.5 demo rating was very good.

Unfortunately, that didn’t last. The sitcom’s ratings declined over the next several weeks. And, once The Voice completed its fall season, New Normal’s numbers really collapsed. Two weeks ago, the series reached a new low — registering a meager 0.7 in the demo and just 2.11 million viewers.

Last week, thanks to the return of The Voice, New Normal’s ratings bounced up 86% to a 1.3 in the demo with 3.32 million. Though the percentage gain is impressive, the show’s ratings are still terrible — even by NBC standards.

Though NBC has few bright spots on its schedule, its clear that the peacock network has no ratings incentive to renew The New Normal for a second season. Thankfully, the cast and crew seem to have given the sitcom’s storylines some sense of closure in tonight’s finale.

What do you think? Would you like to see The New Normal return for a second season or should NBC cancel it to make way for something new?

I started out not liking this show and ended up loving it and the characters.
Please renew and let us grow with this new normal

Please do no cancel this show me and my boyfriend watch it religously and the reason we love it so much is because it puts everything about being gay and gay marriage and other thing that are so commonly mistaken or misrepresented but new normal puts it into perspective and tells it how it really is.

I would like to point out that all of the shows I watch have ran an awful lot of reruns, including this one. When you have people watching, why run something they have seen already. I remember the days where a show was on from Sept to May and the only time there would be a rerun was if it was preempted by something else or if there was an award show or sporting event that would get a bigger rating naturally. However, all of the networks have put repeats in odd place. Tonight it was NCIS that was a repeat. Why would that be necessary? Hopefully their stupidity helped The New Normal in ratings this week.

Love this show, although it doesn’t have the comedy greats as in will & grace , it presents us with relavant gay issue. Please keep it alive!!!

I have never done anything as public on the web but I think this show is brilliant and deserves another season. Just look at the world today with the “moral right ” shouting from every hill top and you can see why all the truly moral people need a voice on TV.

This show must be renewed. The Boy Scout episode was deft and classy. It justifies a new season all by itself!

RENEW this show! I was a bit like Ellen Barkin’s character when I first started watching, never being able to get my head around the whole gay marriage-family thing (forgive, I’m from the midwest and a product of the repressed, Republican 60’s!).

The New Normal not only opened my eyes but made me understand on such a level that I’m now volunteering with a friend’s adoption agency to help gay couples adopt!!

The actors are great … give Nene Leakes and Ellen Barkin more time and better lines! The guys, Goldie, and Shania are perfect and a bunch of us today were discussing this show and ALL of us, ages 22-67, love the show and REALLY REALLY want to see how the next season plays out as the family develops.

GIVE IT A CHANCE, NBC … WHATTAGOT TO LOSE?? Make we viewes happy!!!
