This show sucked and they definitely made the right choice in canceling this disaster of a television show, totally unwatchable. By canceling it after only 8 episodes, I’m obviously not the only one that felt this way.

I live in Dubai, so things get to us a little later over here! I JUST watched the first episode of The Philanthropist and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought I’d check online to see which season was playing in the States now and was GUTTED to discover that yet another great and ORIGINAL show had been canned!! I don’t want to watch any more now because I know I won’t get to see more after ths season. Honestly, NBC…. shame on you….. again.

Do we need anymore proof of our dumbing down? Apparently people would rather watch “Reality TV” as opposed to real acting, travel, scenery, suspense, and paying it forward with good acts. I am very disappointed that “The Philanthropist” is cancelled and there is only drivel on TV when you really just want to take a break, sit down and be entertained. What a shame! The only control we have as consumers is to not support or watch the stations that make these kind of moves.

Another brilliant, refreshing show has bit the dust. What’s up with NBC?! I’m still trying to get over ‘Kings’ being canned. I’m still not over the cancellation of ‘Book of Daniel’! I’ve seen some of NBC’s planned programming, and all I can say is I’m so glad that summer is coming. I’ll be outside on the patio listening to music with a bbq going on.

This is sick. Like others who’m have commented here, this show had meaning. The most memorable episode comes to mind where Teddy hosted a fundaraising dinner with his elite friends where they only ate a small bowl of rice, and he informed his friends that this is what the majority of the world lives on. We need a good show that opens our eyes to the world’s suffering because many of us forget that we could have been born in the shoes of those who are suffering. The cancelling of this show was a huge mistakea, and it should of been given a chance during the fall TV season during the heart of prime time.

I have waited months in hopes that NBC would wise up and reinstate this wonderful show. It had such meaning, beautiful locations, and hardly an episode aired that didn’t make our family feel grateful for our lives as they are. Popular TV has moved on its ridiculous reality-themed shows that families can’t enjoy quality time watching. Dedicated viewers of great shows are again being dumped to make room for more trash. Hope some smart network will take up THE PHILANTHROPIST, like they did with Medium, and similarly co-shared Friday Night Lights.

When the show was cancelled, my husband and I couldn’t believe it. We were so bummed. However, NBC has cancelled some shows that were bad but The Philanthropist was not like the rest. It was the type of show that one could feel good about after watching it. Unlike so many shows on TV, The Philanthropist was eye catching with James Purefoy and the locations were amazing. As a person that travels, I really appreciated the places Teddy jetted off to. It was the type of show that allowed me, as a woman, to fantasize about exotic places to go and be of assistance to those who need help. It was the type of show that gave me vision for my future. I pray it will return. I can only guess that the reason it had sinking ratings in July of 2009 was because it lacked sleezy content that seems to be so exciting to brainless individuals.

I first noticed James Purefoy’s talent in the HBO drama “Rome” where he did a smashing job as a self-centered but likeable Marc Antony. Then that great show was cancelled. Then Purefoy finds his “star vehicle” in the excellent show “The Philanthropist.”

As a UCLA grad, I went to school with many of the higher ups at NBC, and have this to say: Grow a pair, boys and girls, and stop defaulting to the lowest common denominator (i.e. the reality show crowd)!

I can only imagine the coin it took to produce this show, with its multiple exotic locales. Which, of course, is one of the reasons it was such a winning show.

Purefoy will be back. Not to mention the rest of the excellent cast, including the lovely Neve Campbell.

More’s the pity.

I too was just checking to see when the Philanthropist would return, and not surprising to me or my family, NBC chose to cancell another good program that had a great premise, infinite story line potential, interesting characters, and thoughtful family oriented writing. NBC Universal continues to shoot itself in the foot-there is only so much reality TV that people can take and there is no sydication market for reality TV. I have not been this disappointed since NBC Universal cancelled the Dresden Files. My wife is afraid to watch NBC for fear of cancelling a program that she has enjoyed a-la “Lipstick Jungle”, “Life”, and probably “Parenthood” next.

Honestly guys? I am disappointed with your network. Put me in charge and I’ll let you know what people like to see aside from the Reality TV crap. This was a good show, heck, a great show and you had to cut it short of reaching max potential. You did this years ago with The Black Donnelly’s and now that is one of your, if not your most watched online shows. Honestly, I know this cost your network alot of money to make per episode with the extravageant parties and with the beautiful scenery, but look at the big picture: SOMETIMES you have to spend money to make money. Of course the ratings will fall after a few episodes, that is when all of the people who that the show was something different(maybe thought it was reality TV or something) fall off. Thereafter is when people will pass the word and then the ratings will again soar. So you have to give it time. Admit your faults instead of hiding from them….and please bring this show back to life!!!!

I agree. I like a few reality tv shows, but don’t get why they have taken the shows that actually have substance off … like Philathropist; Three Rivers ; and Mental, etc. I loved that it was bring cultures from different countries as well as helping people in need. I loved those shows and thought it was a nice change from the “reality” shows that they seem to keep dumping on TV. I don’t get why they don’t give these shows a chance to catch on and change nights or advertise more or something. It’s really annoying!

Wow. I just searched to find out when The Philanthropist was coming back to the line-up and discovered it’s been cancelled. What a shame. This was a fabulous show. My family and I never failed to be moved. Bringing world issues to our living rooms in a format we can are comfortable with — what a forward-thinking idea. But now it seems that the networks are giving up shows of substance to cable, willing to air only reality tv. Definitely a step in the wrong direction — less network watching time in my house.

I LOVED this show… its so different from any show I’ve seen, so intriguing, captivating, and not just “feel-good,” but actually culturally stimulating… it opens your eyes up to the world, and far surpasses any TV show or reality waste-of-time crap that is hogging the tube these days. Please, please, please bring back Teddy. You won’t regret it. You need to give viewers a chance to get on the bandwagon and… stay for the ride, because we will.

I loved The Philanthropist! I hated when I missed it when it was on, so I always tried to remember to record it. Now I go to Hula to see the shows again and again on my Laptop. I loved the fact that the program talked about real issues and what a better way to get first hand experience from the guy that inspired it-Bobby Sager.

As a missionary myself, I really loved the Nigeria episode and the fact that the season started with that country. I was looking forward to the next stories to include so many other countries.

Plus, I really liked looking at Teddy and Philip.

Please bring back the program!!

This is such an excellent show. I cannot believe they canceled it. My husband and I just finished watching it and we’re scratching our heads wondering WHY would this show be canceled? Why would a show that might make people think, maybe even educate people about different parts of the world, not continue? Where are our values?
Yes, it’s sorta extravagent, the Teddy Rist aspect of it, but what if it encouraged people to reach out, help others? Do those goofy reality shows do that?
Wow, I hope a different network picks this up.
It’s educational, eye opening, and somewhat a humanitarian type show that could help change us.

For once, there was a show that was interesting enough for me and action enough for my husband. We were enjoying watching this one hour of tv together. I loved the traveling and interesting plots taking place in so many parts of the world , that kept me coming back. And really, who doesn’t dream of being a philanthropist? That was quality.

Another good show bites the dust! I almost hate investing time to watch new shows, because almost always the good ones are taking off. What kills me is when I see crappy shows keep getting picked back up and then the good quality shows are lost in the mix. I don’t know if they just don’t put them on at good times or the wrong days or against a top rated show, but again, if they were properly promoted they’d probably have done better. Why don’t they give people time to find out it’s out there. By the time people actually watch the show it’s already taken off. What ever happened to second chances or changing times, or the days they are on? I don’t get it. At least three good shows have gone off this year … The Listener, The Philanthrapst and Three Rivers. I fear some of my other favorites are on the way off too… it always happens.

This is crazy, why would you take off a show that people were really into, why even bother making new shows if not going to keep them around? I really liked the feel of this show, it really made you think about someone other then yourself. Not only have they taken this show off which I enjoyed but to also take Three Rivers away is just insane. I thought Tv was all about ratings and what the viewers wanted. This is really sad I hope that the other stations pick up where NBC has dropped the ball. Sad really Sad!

What a great idea. A more responsible network , like ABC or CBS, may be willing to take a chance and give the Philanthropist a sesond season. To continue to bring awareness to what is happening around the world. The show starts a dialogue out here in TV land, that could have a positive impact in some of these situataions. The advertisers would benefit and profits would be realized.

It’s a shame!
The show was very well produced, with excellent stories. Ok, sometimes it’s nice to be LOST during 24H, looking for your HOUSE… however only The Philanthropist tried to show universal dramas, universal conflicts. This TV show also tried to let American people know about the whole world beyond their edge. Again, it’s a shame. I’m sure that a second season would bring profits to NBC. I also hope that some big channel as HBO, ABC or CBS be able to see how useful and profitable that show can be.

The show had some excellent stories of hope and helping others; I would have enjoyed a season two – the world needs more stories of hope and selflessness. Seems like the ratings are more geared for reality drama and exploiting the lives and pain of others. It’s a shame that the networks have gravitated to the drama of airing out others dirty laundry. Hopefully stories like the philanthropist will return into the homes of America someday soon.

I really enjoyed every episode of The Philanthropist! It was totally interesting with a great cast and story lines with cause and depth. One of the tV moments I truly valued! Bad move NBC…you lost a good one! R Green Louisville KY

I just searched the show to see when more episodes would be coming On Demand and am so disappointed to see that this show has been canceled. It was so refreshing to see some real problems and global issues addressed in this manner. I was very impressed on how up to date the show was and have been anxiously awaiting the 9th episode or season 2. I truly hope that someone out there in the business will see the potential this show has and get it back in production. I will be searching for petitions and updates until hopefully someone will take notice.

I just searched for the new season and am SHOCKED that it isn’t returning! I’ve been waiting in hopes that it would be back. It’s unfortunate that so many other idiotic shows will get to stay, while something with actual “acting” is canceled.

Totally agree with previous posts. This was a very good, smart and even funny show. What’s wrong with the TV networks???? Keep giving us crap to later blame the system? pleazzzze. Bring this show back !!!!

The Philanthropist is one of the best series to come to TV in a long time. I hope HBO or Showtime will pick it up and continue to produce it. The characters are interesting and have depth. The lead character is believably unbelievable! I want it to continue for many seasons to come!
