ABC has cancelled one daytime series and renewed two others. Fans of General Hospital can breathe easy, at least for a little while.
The network has confirmed that The Revolution, their ratings-challenged talk show, will go off the air on July 6th. The TV series debuted in January and took the place of One Life to Live. Hosted by Tim Gunn, Harley Pasternak, Ty Pennington, Jennifer Ashton, and Tiffanie Davis, The Revolution has been a ratings disappointment and has been averaging about 1.3 million viewers according to Deadline.
Meanwhile, both General Hospital and The Chew have been renewed for the 2012-13 season. While General Hospital’s viewer numbers have come down over the years, the ratings have shown signs of improvement. In late March, GH averaged 2.3 million viewers while The Chew drew 2.2 million. The Revolution pulled in just 1.3 million.
Katie Couric’s new talk show, Katie, is slated to premiere on September 10th and will air at 3pm on most stations. Until that happens, ABC will fill the timeslot with an hour-long afternoon version of Good Morning America, tentatively titled GMA in the Afternoon.
While the alphabet network hasn’t said as much, they are obviously still searching for low-cost programming to fill their daytime hours. While the renewal of General Hospital has ensured that the venerable soap opera will reach its 50th anniversary — on April 1, 2013 — there’s certainly no guarantees beyond that.
What do you think? Did ABC make the right decision to renew General Hospital? Do you think it will reach its 51st year?

LOVE General hospital!!!!! Get rid of The Revolution and bring back OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get rid of “The Chew” and put “The Revolution” in it’s place. The Revolution is my favorite daytime show. I would hate to see it go off the air.
I have been watching General Hospital on and off for 36 years. I have watched all the ABC soaps at one point but stopped years ago. I love that I can DVR it because it isn’t a convenient time, unfortunately I don’t think GH will last much longer. I don’t know anyone else who watches anymore, most people just think soaps are a joke. Maybe if they made things a little more realistic and less campy or didn’t have so many storylines, I’m not sure but I hope they can save GH.
Thank you for keeping General Hospital!!!!! It is the best and has been for years.
Praise goodness for saving General Hospital,,,I will not turn ABC on in the daytime with those reality shows. They should be called reality trash!
The chew ??? Big mistake. The only reason the revolution may have the poor ratings is beause it follows the self absorbed, bored, detached to audience hosts of the view. Egomaniacs. Katie curic? She rates down there with rosie odonell, not entertaining.
I think you all made a huge mistake cancelling “The Revolution” I have been so inspired by the show that I’m loosing weight now after my fall in 2005, going to really miss that show. I don’t watch soaps I think life is enough of one. OMG if you can change your mind get rid of the Chew instead that show is childish not made for grown up’s no help to loose weight or inspire someone to will be switching channels now.
Thank you
Jackie deRiesthal
I love GH! Happy they got renewed! I ha The Revolution and the Chew! We need soaps during the day. Please ABC put the soap operas back on please
Will miss The Revolution. It’s much more interesting than The Chew ( might as well watch Food Network). Miss my ABC Soaps.
They need to keep GH on, I’m sick of talk shows and cooking shows, put something with a
Storyline behind it, as far as any show that replaces One life to live and Another World, Refuse to watch, its all about making money the cheapest way, and that means talk show or
Low budget shows, soaps have been around for years , keep them!
Hope everyone else refuses to watch the shows that replaces are soaps also!!
Agree with cancelling the Revolution. While there were a few interesting stories, mostly it seemed to be the same all the time. I miss All My Children and One Life to Live. I am happy to see some of the One Life to Live characters on General Hospital, though. Hope General Hospital is kept beyond next April. There are just too many talk shows on during the day. They start early in the morning and keep going until 2 in the afternoon (PST.) That is just too much. Since the two soaps were taken off the air, I have switched to soaps on another channel. Basically, for ABC it is the morning show and then GH and then the evening programming with which they are doing a great job.
Although I seldom watched the soaps, when I first turned on–or now look at…the new daytime shows like the CHEW and the REVOLUTION…I throw up a little in my mouth. I got nauseous watching TIM GUNN, aka the Fashion expert on another one of the enchanted channels, talking about mixing pattern on pattern with patterns. Other than using new and trendy colors, it still looked stupid…something that grand pa-pa would wear but in 1950′s color tones. Go back to selling clothes at your high end fashion mall. You are hardly a trendsetter just because you wear $100 shirts and promote your friends clothing lines on network TV! And others have said it best. Put the Cooking shows on the Cooking Channels…and don’t try to force goofy people who cook on us!
Finally the right decision, keeping GH. Now if “THE CHEW” would be canceled too, you would truly be on the right path.
Bring back what the people want to see in the afternoons, OLTL.
I agree whole heartedly. The Revoltion is medicore at best and while I sometimes enjoy The Chew I think the network made a big mistake cancelling the soap operas. I mourn their loss : ).
I’m 68, have spent many years being at home during the day and have never watched Soaps. I was delighted that ABC had a show like the Revolution. I love Tim Gunn and the others. The show has a lot of variety and is easy to watch. I was quite hooked. I liked the Chew, but it’s too much cooking, cooking challenges and too much food prepared with meats that we’re told by Dr’s to keep to a minimum. If it had got the AX, and you’d kept the Revolution, I’d have been happy.
Yes yes keep GH and for the love of God bring back OLTL the revolution is crape plain and simple. Listen to your viewers.
