The River: ABC’s New Thriller Series; Cancel or Keep It?

The River: cancel or renew?ABC continues to try to replace some of their aging hour-long TV series. Once Upon a Time will be renewed but how about The River? Cancelled after one short season?

The River revolves around the search for beloved TV host and explorer Doctor Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) some six months after he and his team went missing down the Amazon. His wife, son, their crew and a documentary team go after them on a rescue mission. As you might expect, they find more than they expected and the trip is fraught with danger. The cast includes Joe Anderson, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Paul Blackthorne, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Zacapa, Shaun Parkes, and Paulina Gaitan.

The paranormal/horror series got a double-episode launch on Tuesday, February 7th. The first hour averaged a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.35 million total viewers. The second hour drew a 2.3 demo rating with 6.83 million. Those demo numbers were better than what Body of Proof’s been getting but were still disappointing.

Looking at the half-hour breakdowns, you can see that the ratings steadily declined as the two hours progressed. Between the first half hour and the last, The River lost 15% in the demo and 26% in total viewership. That certainly wasn’t a good indication that those people would return for week two.

Should The River be cancelled?

And, they didn’t. For the third episode, The River’s demo fell a whopping 26% with a 1.7 rating with 4.96 million. Several shows also saw declines that night but The River was easily the biggest loser of the evening.

After just three installments, The River averages a 2.0 in the coveted demo and 5.9 million viewers. It ranks 12th on the list of ABC scripted shows for this season, just above already-cancelled sitcom Man Up!. The River also receives a “D+” on the ABC network report card. Unless the next episode attracts at least a 2.0 rating, the season average and grade will drop even further.

TV show supportBased on this early performance, it looks certain that The River will be cancelled after one season. The network only ordered eight episodes so there are only five produced installments remaining. The last is expected to air on March 20th. Given that this is an ongoing mystery series, it seems highly unlikely that the story will be wrapped up by the finale.

But, what do you think? Have you been enjoying The River? Do you think it deserves to be cancelled or get a renewal for season two? Cancel or keep it?

The one show creeptastic enough to lure my fourteen year old away from his computer! The River allows us to have something we haven’t enjoyed in years, a family t.v. night, if even for an hour. This television show is like a movie I would pay to see every week. Lincoln’s possession was leaps and bounds over the possessions in The Devil Inside and I paid to go see that! Give me at least one more season of The River!!!

This show is amazing! It’s the best new show this year, and it has so much potential!!!! I read people saying stuff like “woot more camera watching…”, they were just setting stuff up!!!! Now that they have Emmet they can get stuff going! It will be just as good as Lost, if not better since it’s easier to follow. KEEP THE RIVER ABC!!! OR AT LEAST DO A DOUBLE EPISODE TO WRAP IT UP.

for those of you who have bad things to say about this show. you just don’t enjoy it because it doesn’t have a fake applause and fake laughs in the background every time someone says a crap joke written by a 5th grader who uses sponge bob for his inspiration. this show is something major television channels have been missing for years now. honestly jordan? bad camera work? how stupid are you? this guy has made his mark by using this style. it is how he shoots. you watch a show through the directors eyes not through your blind a** eyes and how they want to see it. i am so sick of all these shows like happy endings, suburgatory, last man standing. i mean really? they say this show is terrible but they enjoy watching tim allen?

The River has got to be the best show on ABC (besides Once Upon a Time that is). Horrifying and extremely intriguing, The River has much potential as well as phenomenal acting and a fantistic premise. I would give anything to get a renewal for this amazing show.

If the river is not renewed I will be incredibly sad it is one of the best shows on tv like so many others said there are no more imaginative shows only movies I thinks it deserves at least one more season

Leave it to ABC to cancel a shows leaving unexplained questions just like they did with other shows like October Road. These are Shows we can actually get our kids to watch with us yet they are going to cancel them. Way to go ABC!!!!!!!!!! KEEP THE RIVER !!!!
